I may feel differently after a few more listens but the album just overall lacks balls IMO. Plus TWO instrumentals (3 if you count the intro)? WTF? I HATE instrumentals!
I feel the same. During my initial listen the first word that came to mind was, for lack of a better word, disappointment. The album starts off strong in typical Ghost fashion then delves deeper and deeper into obscurity. It's like they recorded it in order and then after the first few songs Papa said ok guys, you can take your guitars and go home, me and the keyboardist got this. LOL I'm all for evolution of sound and artist experimentation but after revisiting this album I really have one question in my head and that is....did they really need to release this right now? Why not wait a bit and add a couple of heavier tracks to balance out the album or just trim the fat and release it as another EP? It's barely an album at 10 songs considering 3 of them are instrumentals (well, 2 instrumentals and an intro). Seriously, "fillers" on a 10 song album? IMO, it would be a good release if it were better balanced and didn't feel like it gave up halfway through. (add a couple of heavier tracks, scratch at least one of the instrumentals and mix up the order).

Sometimes bands are contractually obligated to their labels to produce so many albums in a certain span of time. Maybe that's the case here? Either way I agree with you. I just feel like the album is lacking something. Plus, like I said before, TWO instrumentals on a 10 song album is borderline silly. Plus, to my ears they don't even really sound like instrumentals. They sound like songs that should've had lyrics but didn't for whatever reason. They aren't interesting enough musically to stand on their own without lyrics.

After a few more spins, I would grade this album 6/10. I don't think it's a bad album but it's easily Ghost's weakest so far. Too many instrumentals and too many easy-listening tunes bring it down. However the album isn't completely devoid of great stuff. "Faith" is a damn good song! "Rats" even though I'm already kind of tired of it, is a great song! I like Dance Macabre as well, even though to my ears it sounds like a mid 80's KISS song. I like "See The Light" as well. Like I said before, I just wish Ghost would've saved Square Hammer and maybe Nocturnal Me for this album. Would've elevated it up a notch.

Got my digipak on friday, listened to it all weekend & I like it. Not as good as Hair of the Dog, but better than Renegades. The drum mix sounds different this time around, a bit dry & the kick drum is really prominent. I prefer the drum mix on HotD, but they still sound ok. Pretty tight performances on Hellhound & I can't seem to get Wheels of Steel out of my head.

You might wanna check this band out too Ray, a bit of an old school sound. I'd start with their debut & move forward, & there's a few songs off of their 2003 Sudden Impact EP, including a cover of Black Sabbath's Disturbing The Priest you might wanna check out:

Welcome home! (Insanitarium)

Haven’t heard of them. Checked out a couple older songs. I’ll have to give em a listen some more. Thanks for the heads up. I don’t listen to as much Death Metal or whatever exact genre anything is any more. So many sub-genres. I still crank some Decapitated often.

I got an old friend named Alex that lives a few hundred feet from me that has a band called Putrefukation if I need more of a death metal fix.

RAM - Forced Entry (2005) - YouTube
Right on. I’ll check em out. Thanks for the heads up and the YouTube link.

Got my Hellhound Box Set in today. Gotta wait until my Birthday in a few days to open it to appease my wife’s interests.

Wheels of Steel is a good one. Gotta love the Priest influence on some of this release. Nightrider is definitely an ode to everything Priest.
Random tidbit: Nightrider was the name of one of Slayer’s early live songs before they released Show No Mercy. It’s fun to look back at the old Woodstock and other OC videos from when they first started. Best of times.

i think they're one of the strongest death metal acts going right now - first demo isn't as great looking back, but the growth they've shown in two years is pretty outrageous.

it's been a really strong year for death metal so far, which is really exciting for me.

also, loving all the Slayer talk. thought about catching this tour but couldn't commit. they were my first show in 2004, really set me off onto seeing as many bands as i could

fixed up my fire pit

New Ghost is ok. Probably could use one more heavier song. Meliora & Infestissumam are both better albums.

The boxset looks nice. Wheels of Steel probably isn't even my fav song off of the album, but it's just sticking in my head for some reason.

I listened to the new album & I'm not sure why, because I don't like Ghost at all, & I didn't think they could sound any worse than they already do, but the new one is a new level of suck. It's horribly bad & blows chunks all over their other vapid, boredom inducing albums.

First impression of Ghost's new album Prequelle blew my mind. I seem to be in the minority, but I am very happy with the new direction. I didn't come in with expectations for a "heavy metal" album, I think Forge has stated numerous times that he is self-aware that Ghost is on the lighter side of metal.

What I wanted from this was memorable songs, and in my opinion many of these stand with the best material of their past. Miasma is a beast of an instrumental, and saxophone... who knew?

If the album title is any clue, I'm betting that this is a mini-album compared to something bigger Ghost has in store for us, and I bet the wait won't be as long as we think!

On first listen I'm giving Prequelle a solid 8 out of 10.

Lombardo's drumming on South of Heaven still remains what i think is the best one-album performance of any drummer on any album. i'd listen to a drum-only version of that album in a heartbeat

So ironic that you say that. I also think it’s easily his best drumming in Slayer.
Everybody always wants to talk about Reign In Blood as their best release, but Dave’s drumming on South is on a whole different level.
Not only does he play excellent on South, but I personally think the overall drum sound is the best I’ve ever heard. The snare sounds like a gunshot, the bass drums have perfect sound, and the cymbals all resonate perfectly. The epitome of dialed-in sound for a drummer.

Don’t get me wrong, Reign is still a 10/10, but South is a more well rounded release. Hell Awaits is, and will always be, my favorite, though.

Edit: one day I was listening to South of Heaven and I was wondering if anyone could play Live Undead on the drums like Dave does. I found this guy that does a pretty damn good job, although the tone of his drums is much different. See if you like it:

i'll echo this whole sentence - Hell Awaits is one of my favorite albums by anyone. it's raw, it's evil, it's great.

At Dawn They Sleep and Crypts of Eternity are some of the greatest songs ever penned
