lineup for Maryland Deathfest is shaping up nicely, definitely going to have to consider a trip for at least Saturday and Sunday

Regarding Ghost's Prequelle album:

I love it, but my introduction to it was a much different experience than my usual wait for release day then listen. I saw Ghost live the week leading up to Prequelle's release for their Rats! on the Road tour. They opened with the Intro + Rats. Miasma nearly brought the place down, and was one of the most unexpectedly awesome songs of the show considering so few of us had heard it at all at that point. Pro Memoria was solid. Faith was nice and heavy. Dance Macabre was one of the last couple songs they did and it was excellent. Everything from the new album they played fit in perfectly with the rest of the set list, and it was a two part, two plus hour show so they played a lot of songs.

Since getting the album I've really been liking Witch Image, and the combo of Helvetesfonster (instrumental) and Life Eternal. Wouldn't be surprised at all if those three cracked the set list for their tour later this year.

Insanely good record. Essential listening for anyone into Metallic Hardcore.

This record will be as big for this band as "Forever" was for Code Orange in 2017.

I like how hardcore it sounds, but it’s a little too screamo for my taste.
I think the closest I get to this style of vocals nowadays might be something like Condemned to Suffer by All Out War. Mostly because I dig the guitar and arrangements more.

also, there are a lot of Ghost fans here and that is not a band i've ever liked, but apparently before Ghost the main guy did vocals for a cool band called Repugnant:

their first EP is really good

Definitely picking this one up !

I also like the new Immortal.

Nuclear Blast has a booth at SDCC every year. So next week I’ll pick up a copy from them.

new Immortal is a ripper - they don't do anything new and there's a lot of thematic retreads and callbacks to older songs, but it's Immortal doing what they do best

Demonaz sounds awesome, really a furious performance to get himself back on the map as the main man of Immortal. an unexpected highlight in a very good 2018

Agree completely, there is some "samey-ness" with the faster tracks and similarly with the slower more "epic" tracks, and for sure there is some repetitive similarity in riffs and pace or as you say "callbacks". Immortal is a weird band for me as I LOVE Pure Holocaust and Heart of Winter, yet think Blizzard Beasts and Battles of the North are are pure shit and are virtually unlistenable and most diehards love those last two and feel Immortal ended being relevant at that point. Diabolical is sort of a weird quasi Ulver/Bathory/Darkthrone lovechild to my ears that is curiously enjoyable, but often just doesn't really do much for me. In additiuon I like, but am not blown away by, Damned, Sons, and ASF, but am not crazy about any of them mainly because Abbath's vocals just grates on me after a while on all those albums. Really prefer Demonaz as the vocalist by far with this release !!!

As good as this is it won't beat out Hooded Menace - Ossuarium Silhouettes Unhallowed, or Priest's - Firepower (and hopefully the Alice In 8Chains) for my fave metal release of 2018, but then there hasn't been a ton of material I have bought this year so I am probably missing out on a bunch of good releases that I have just missed since I have shifted a lot of my spending to buying blu rays this year vs cds.

Implying "Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism" to be Ulver-influenced is a bit off, as Ulver didn't even exist when it was recorded

Immortal has always been a "theme" band, constantly referencing their own particular set of phrasing and imagery. The chaos has definitely been conspicuously missing on their last few so it's good to have it back.

i came to love Blizzard Beasts and Battles in the North after a few years - they just sort of opened up to me in a weird way. they definitely are the most "wall of sound" releases in their discography, but At The Stormy Gates of Mist, Moonrise Fields of Sorrow, and Noctambulant are some of my favorite tracks of theirs.

I have a deep affection for Diabolical as well - Unholy Forces of Evil is a top 3 Immortal song for me. early thrashy Norwegian black metal is the best.

Demonaz's return is definitely a breath of fresh air, but Abbath is such a fun personality that i'll miss him if i get to see them on a potential tour (but i don't see a tour happening)

as for 2018, i don't think this crack a top 5 for me if i were to make a list. Demonomancy's Poisoned Atonement and Tomb Mold's Manor of Infinite Forms are still neck and neck for #1 for me, with the new Ataraxy, Necros Christos, Torture Rack, Ghastly, Taphos, and Rotted rounding out the rest of my favorites for the year

and that's not counting the great demos that have surfaced

so much good stuff and it's only July

Can't see either of those albums ever really working for me as you said they are just "too wall of sound/noise" for me to be that enjoyable and i would highly doubt they tour unless its to just do some Euro festivals but here is to hoping maybe !!

Have to admit I am clearly not as dialed in on the extreme metal as you appear to be, but you did get me to check out Tomb Mold and i was quite surprised by what i heard. That is some pretty solid stuff right there, (in fact - and I am editing this post as a result - I am buying the latest cd thanks to YOU, sucks I knew nothing about them a month ago or I would have gone to see them in Philly damn it) . I am definitely going to check out some of the other bands you listed as I get time to do so, so thanks for those recommendations. A good pal of mine has a podcast called Metalheads podcast@ wearemetalheads.com that you might enjoy, they are far more into the underground scene than I tend to be and have a much broader range of extreme metal they discuss and review (while drinking copious amounts of craft brews I might add) so check it out. Cheers

Some good new stuff (to me anyway) that has gotten my ear: Oceans of Grief - Nightfall's Lament (if you like Swallow the Sun, Paradise Lost, older Katatonia, older Opeth you will like this for sure !!), Monolithe - Nebula Septem, Alkaloid - Liquid Anatomy, Tribulation - Down Below, and the behemoth monstrosity that is Slugdge - Esoteric Malacology (a ****ing fire breathing monster of a metal masterpiece !)
