I'd say the 2nd one looks like it was shot with 1080i videotape instead of film, but that would be insulting the integrity of 1080i videotape.

Thumbs down

so you have a grainy release and everyone is booing, the review has no more than 2/5 and now that you get a waxy release you want the grainy saying its the best and represents how the film was supposed to be watched... come on, FOX can not make a personal release for all of you in the world just because you want more grain but not too much, more contrast but not too much neither... looks like my girlfriend

Although I don't like his plastic face now, I like Rourke's post-plastic surgery movies more than his pre-plastic surgery films...

Honest curiosity here,

for those that are seriosuly bothered by the grain, can you list some films that come to mind that you've seen in the theater, that didn't bother you?

and please, movies shot on film and not animated films. Movies made from actual film.

Do most movies you see in the theater bother you?

Besides mindless testicle waving, what do any of you hope to accomplish in this discussion by repeatedly calling each other idiots?

Is there some secret lottery for people that use that word that I'm not aware of?

Do Predators find butt sex gross?

Well actually, I would assume the same thing after watching the new version. You can't go by just the screen captures. Trust me the motion effect is totally unnatural for film. If you have seen this new version and prefer it ONLY because it seems clearer or more vivid but are willing to deal with the jittery motion then I am at a loss.

This new release makes no sense at all.

I am going to out on a limb here and say the ones that describe the first release as sandstorm, grainfest etc have no idea what grain is or what it looks like. I think they equate it to soft picture quality.

People with nothing substantial to say always revert to name calling. Another method they use is to turn the debate into criticizing the person they are debating, instead of staying on the topic at hand. Go through the thousands of postings in this thread (or, better yet, don't) and you will see it over and over again.

There's nothing to accomplish other than to address moronic comments such as the one I've quoted. I have not belittled anyones opinion toward the original blu, or assumed anything about anyones personal tastes based on that fact (as the quoted poster clearly did). As I've stated, I think the ire over this release is much ado about nothing. When I pointed out the silence coming from the director/dp, the responses were "they weren't involved", well, yeah, but that hasn't stopped filmmakers from voicing their dissapproval in the past when their work was handled shoddilly (the Divimax edition of Halloween comes to mind). Oh, and saying that this BD will somehow set a precedent is pretty silly. Film studios like all companies try to make more money w/ the least ammount of cost. I'm pretty sure its cheaper to strike an HD print and author it to BD, than to digitally manipulate the print prior to authoring.

P.S.: Predators don't find butt sex gross, however I'd imagine oral is frowned upon.

So your opinion is that this release can't be all that bad since someone who was in the creative process like the Director hasn't come forward to say "WTF?"?

My concern along with many others here do actually worry about other catalog releases to appease people that think HD = super slick.

Have you seen the new version?

I'll finally be watching the disc tonight, but those screenshots from AVS poster Xylon are just awful looking. I can only imagine what it will look like in motion. A smudgy, brightness boosted mess I assume.

I take back something I said a while ago. Patton doesn't look awful. Not compared to this. This is looking like the poster boy for the effects of too much DNR. This release could have been great. DNR is a tool, and used properly can be of great value...to someone who knows what they're doing. See Lowry Digital and their Bond Blu-rays. That's how you use DNR on a grainy film. You don't just hit a button that says "Apply to everything" and then boost the gamma to turn night into day.

With the price and the included free ticket, I was very tempted to pick this up anyways. But this disc is nothing but a cash grab, and there's no way I'm supporting what is arguably one of the worst BD hack jobs ever.

If the studios ultimately survive on catalog sale, and sales decline over time, what disc is not a cash grab? Please explain.

I have, and I've seen the original, and to me its a wash. One is more filmic, but suffers from compression artifacts, while the other has heavy ammounts of DNR, but is more vivid, has better contrast. Either version you champion has faults and liking one over the other doesn't make yours or my s#$t stink any less.

And I'm not saying that a lack of grumbling from the filmmakers justifies my liking the new BD more than the original, but to point out to people on this board who are getting upset about this BD that if this transfer is such an affront to the way it was meant to be seen, where are their voices in all this? Could it be that they just don't care?
