It wasn't the camera, it was the focus puller. Sometimes they don't hit their mark (or the actor doesn't) and the DP decides to go with the out of focus shot rather than come back for costly reshoots. |

That really is anamorphic in a nutshell, focus pulling has long been a pain with that glass because it's got such a shallow depth of field, especially when shooting wide open. Go back 40 years to Deer Hunter and there's a shot near the end when De Niro leans in to talk to Nicky, he's only moved forward slightly but his shoulders are now in focus while his face isn't. In that case though the focus puller adjusts and brings his face back into sharp relief.

Digital Bits says that MI: Fallout is confirmed to be the IMAX version on the 4K disc-- I know some of you will groan at that, but I'm all over this like

Unless you're in the cinema watching on a giant screen I see little benefit to switching ratios. |

I think the effect works well at home, too. Not everyone agrees, I know, which is why I don't think it should ever be a one or the other scenario. We'll probably know more when the actual release and tech specs are announced, but the director has apparently confirmed it-- I know, I know, Bill Hunt. grrr, arghh, but if it's true we'll probably see more places reporting it soon.

I have a scope screen and this doesn't bug me a bit because the IMAX version is literally just open matte. It isn't shot with IMAX 15/70. So I can just crop the image and it will be exactly the same as the theatrical.

Always, ALWAYS give us the full frames. If it means switching ratios, it's worth it.
To me, cropping perfectly good IMAX frames just to have a constant aspect ratio is a crime. I bought a large TV set to get as close to cinema as possible -- why cripple that? |

Though, the cinema experience can be scope as well. Movies shouldn't have to conform to fitting your TV's 1.78:1 aspect ratio. |

Already had GP. Picked up RN today and it looks fantastic. The intentionally muted color scheme was wonderfully preserved. Not as flashy and showy as GP, but the transfer is still great in its own right. And I liked this movie better.

So Mission Impossible 1 had the honor of being my first 4k blu ray that I have ever seen. Watched the first on blu ray about a week ago and this one is a huge step up. While it's not the best showcase of what the 4k format can do, it's amazing.

Bait. And I am taking it... dammit. I can't resist.
M:I 2 actually fits the description of cheap TV movie (sorry John Woo...). Oh-so-many cheesy lines, sub-optimal choreography for stunts, chases, and fights, plus a terrible antagonist. I tend to think people only say that III looks like it was made for TV because JJ Abrams did Alias before it. There are similarities, sure, but then there are plenty of differences too. |
