Did anyone else feel that The Destroyer had a Gort/Godzilla vibe to it?

Definitely!!! I'm assuming you are referring to the Keanu Reeves version of the movie. But it was pretty cool though.

Ok! The wife and I are back from seeing ‘THOR’ at the IMAX in 3D. Honestly I didn’t know she had bought the 3D ticket version or was is it only in 3D at the IMAX, at the time of writing I don’t know.

A good movie, nothing for me to tell you to rush and go see or to tell you it’s the greatest made, or even that they just keep making movies better and better each time. No I really can’t say those things, to make you want to spend your money on this one, but yet it was an excellent movie to see. I enjoyed the sci-fi effects, backgrounds were excellent with some nice special effects, you gotta remember, this is a comic book hero.

Not just me, but the over the top Thor fans wearing those silly helmets were pretty quiet when the movie was over, I seriously didn’t hear mumbles from people saying how fantastic or how much they loved it.

I hope I don’t discourage anyone from going or that I didn’t like the movie, I am really happy to have seen it for my birthday, but something else could have come before it.

This will be an ok movie to have in your library of blus, but it will not move in the top ranks of demo material.

There were a few LFE, I thought “Hummm, that might sound good at home, but then again, I’m in an IMAX, that should have blown me away.” So there goes the expectation of some fantastic LFE scenes for home viewing.

I can’t tell you what to go see before going out to watch this one, because the wife and I haven’t been to the movie theater in awhile. I hope this doesn’t keep her at home more.

I do admit looking at the 3D preview for ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ made me for the first time, want 3D equipment at home.

So my suggestion to you would be, go see it and tell me I was a little too tuff on the movie!!!

One more thing, I was highly disappointed at the ending scene after the credits, had to be the weakest of them all so far, and I’m pretty sure it will stay on the bottom.

I may eat my words, because I believe that's the only thing it may beat, and that's Fast Five.

This was just not a fantastic IMAX experience.

Nice review Hamp', I'll prob. be seeing it a week from NEXT Weds., (5/18), as $$$$$$ is a bit tight thru all of next week. I'll def. have my review of it (in my thread, of course)

As for the LFE at the IMAX, yea, you're right. I just saw FAST & FURIOUS 5 yesterday (Weds.) in an IMAX as well & it had some Incredible LFE & Loud Audio in general. It'll prob. have a great Audio track also. In the FAST & FURIOUS 5 Review Thread, I rated it a 3.5 of 5, rounded up to a 4 (as 3.5 wasn't an option). Aside from the Opening Scene (on a train) & the whole Bank Vault scene, it was pretty damn entertaining.

A Great addition to the cast was them having Dwayne "The " Johnson!! I've heard he's prob. going to be in the 6th film in the series, & also might be getting his Own "spin-off" movie based on his character in this. He is SOOOO Freakin' HUGE here, he makes Vin Diesel look like a Small Man. I Sh!t you Not!! After seeing him in FF5, All I can Say (& HOPE/PRAY!!) is that he does 90% ACTION Movies from here on in. Do the "occasional" story movie, or drama, or comedy every few years. But keep hitting the Gold's Gyms & Keep Kicking A$$ all over our Multiplexes!!!!!!

I read that Fast Five beat out THOR overseas, and that's pretty bad for a 5th edition movie to beat out a movie of Thor’s caliber.

I’m not so sure those number are that impressive.

I disagree. You have to remember the FAST FIVE series has a huge BUILT-IN Audience already, AND as I noted, the Addition of DWAYNE JOHNSON ("The "!), only Adds to the "I Gotta See This!" Factor. Plus, you have VIN DIESEL "AND" PAUL WALKER back, & the 4th film in 2009 was good & did big numbers also.

Nobody knows the whole THOR character really (IMO) except comic book fans, which may be a decent percentage of attendees, but I'd surmise they'd be in the 30% range of ticket buyers.

I never cared for THOR growing up.. but i feel another reason Fast Five did well was it was not in 3D.. I know a lot of people taht avoid seeing a movie if its in 3D only, plus it cost more as well.. personally i hate fake wrestling and think the rock is a joke so i will not see Fast Five

Yes it does have a built in audience, but it's only when the second edition of a movie in a franchise will bring in more customers or maybe 3rd and level off, once that franchise get into the 4th and beyond, they start to lose people.

And if they have lost people by this being the 5th, and it's beating out a new movie, then that kinda tells you something.

Yea I never was into Comics at all & the 3D thing May have Helped (it's not for everyone, I agree). "The Rock" was just his Character (as you know). He's not doing THE ROCK in FF5, he's just a big bad-ass mean motha' working for the FBI who you call when nothing else is working (in tracking down the toughest/most dangerous fugitives). IF you like some of his more Action-type movies, you'll enjoy him & his Character in FF5.

It's telling me the Previews/Trailers were Done RIGHT, and, DWAYNE JOHNSON coming on board was a GREAT Decision by the Studio/Director. We saw previews of him kicking butt, being a bad hombre', & knew he'd have a face-off with Vin (Domenic Terretto) sometime in the film, all of which (IMO) puts even MORE butts in the seats.

Time to eat a slight bit of crow from my initial thoughts on Thor because a second screening did help.

In the end, it's easily behind the first Iron Man film in the Marvel Studios films. At an hour and 45 minutes without credits, it's simply 10 minutes too short but they make the most of the running time with a cast that really tries to sell this film, especially Hemsworth, Portman, and Hiddleston.

Part of my problem with the film is the Earth section...not so much the content but the fact that it is here where I feel that Marvel cut corners, in terms of cost. Frankly, it looks cheap. I don't believe that Captain America will get the same treatment which leads me to think that Marvel was hoping that Thor would work in some capacity. In a way, they shortchanged Branagh, the cast, and the material because the opening 30 minutes convince the audience that this story and this character could go really, really big.

It hurts the film that the best action sequence happens in the first 30 minutes and the film doesn't really recover. It also doesn't help that some of the visual effects just really don't work and in this day and age of visual effects, that's just inexcusable.

Even with all of that, Thor has the best villain of the Marvel Studios' films. It has the best romantic chemistry than any of the Marvel Studios's films. Hemsworth and Portman's story is one of instant attraction and flirtation. You absolutely buy that they are instantly attracted to each other and are intrigued by each other. The problem is that the film gives us no reason as to why Thor would choose her over all the ladies of Asgard that I know he at least has a chance at, considering he's heir to the throne...especially Lady Sif.

Portman's Foster is very interesting because she's completely intelligent and dedication to her lifelong research. Thor's her evidence, her validation. At the same time (and this is really, really apparent on the second viewing), she really wants to jump Thor's bones immediately. It's really fun to watch Portman play a character this loose, this giddy. It reminded me instantly of her character in Garden State.

Thor's redemption played slightly better the second time but it still needed more time to develop. On my initial viewing, I thought Thor's redemption didn't work because I felt he was being manipulative in his sacrifice. I felt that he knew that if he sacrificed himself, he knew he would be worthy to wield the Hammer and the power of Thor again. On second viewing, that's not the case. He was just trying to save his friends with his sacrifice with no hidden agenda.

Even with that realization, I still needed more time for Thor to understand what his father was trying to teach him. Hemsworth tries his hardest to sell it and he almost pulls it off. I'm pretty sure that the deleted scenes will have the other moments that will help this portion of the film.

All in all, it's way better than Iron Man 2 and the Incredible Hulk. I feel it's more honest and earnest than the Iron Man films even though, from a script and execution perspective, the original Iron Man film is still better than this.

Even with that, I hope that Thor goes really big with the sequel and away from Earth. I also hope that the arc of Thor for the sequels is that he continues to learn and finally ascends to the throne of Asgard. I also wish we get a serious, honest look at the love triangle that seems to be developing in the latter half of the film. We need to see Jane on Lady Sif's turf in the sequels.

I want more of this universe...but I want it executed better. But, I'm down with my first true encounter of Thor.

As an aside, what didn't get better was Patrick Doyle's score. It's still terrible.

I know what you mean about the Earth side of things, when most Marvel characters get to fight in big cities with major destruction, Thor ends up in some tiny looking backwater town! That said a lot of money must have been spent on Asgard, it was pretty impressive.

I hope there will be a second Thor film but I'd rather it was Earth based with little or no Asgard at all.

I saw it in 3D, it was fine, but I wouldn't urge anyone to see it in 3D, I'm sure 2D is just fine and that's how I'll be watching it on blu-ray later this year.
