So unless it's a genuinely bad film or undermarketed in the month or two before release it should do all right at least.
I'd be very surprised if it makes its budget back, to be honest. I know some will go see it due to the brand, but the same thing happened with Ang Lee's "Hulk"...which dropped over 60% by its second weekend.

I agree. The Fantastic Four isn't a movie that people have been dying to see. Audiences need to be made aware of this and need to be convinced to see it.

I think all the apathy towards marketing it will bite the movie's earnings in the butt, and it will be lucky to make its money back if it doesn't get good reviews.

Sadly they still get to use the Marvel logo. I wonder how many people that make up the general audience will think this might be connected to the MCU films.

The main fans that will be seeing this are Fox studios fans more than the actual FF fans.

It'll probably gross around $150m just like the last two films unless it turns out to be exceptional, or the critics don't tear it apart before they even see it.

Most summer films drops over 60% in their second weekend.

The marketing will ramp up dramatically as it gets closer to release I'm sure. Still a ways to go yet. Disney have barely marketed Ant-Man at all either.

Since when? I know the first weekend is usually the highest, but a 60% drop is still huge for one week's time. My point was that "Hulk" was a subpar effort, and people noticed that very quickly. This hods true for most movies; if people don't like it, they spread the word, and the film bombs.

But Ant-Man is guaranteed to be great because it's a Marvel Studios product!!

Unlike Transformers where everyone recognized its amazing quality and rewarded it.

Box office means nothing quality wise.

a movie can be entertaining without being "high quality" according to you. The Transformers movies are entertaining.

Show me where someone said - me, specifically - that "they wear black outfits so the movie must suck."

After I posted the "new" stills, the point of contention was about the stills specifically and the costumes. The stills are exactly the same as stills released before... medium shots and close ups of the same three actors, just from different vantage points.

The costumes are bland, nondescript, and boring.

That doesn't mean the movie must suck... it just means that the costumes are bland, nondescript, and boring.

Which is what we were saying. "All that is in those pics is faces and costumes," yes... and that's what we - me in particular - were reacting to. I'm not so childish as to hate a movie because the 'costumes that aren't actually costumes' are stupid.

My only point was that the stills are boring and more of the same - which they are - and that the "costumes" are boring and look crappy, which they do.

I recognize your seething sarcasm, but you can understand why someone would have more faith in a Marvel Studios production than a Fox production, can't you?

It's true that Ant-Man hasn't shown much right now either as Marvel is focusing on Age of Ultron. But Marvel has a better track record than Fox. Fox has made two Fantastic Four films that are generally viewed as bad. And while Marvel has yet to make an Ant-Man film before this one, they do have a proven track record with unproven properties -- Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and Guardians of the Galaxy, especially and most recently.

I don't necessarily agree that not showing much, at this time, is a sign the movie is bad and Fox is trying to keep as much of it a secret as possible for that reason. My problem yesterday was that the things they're showing us are the same three actors in the same boring costumes in the same boring stills they showed the last time they debuted something.

Doesn't mean the movie is bad... just means there's nothing for me to get excited about right now. "Here's a picture of Miles Teller from the waist up."

One month later.

"Here's a picture of Miles Teller, slightly closer. Get excited, Fantastic Four fans!!!"

Thanks for the boring stills, Fox. Two pictures of Miles Teller?! Boy, that sure does get me hyped!
no impressed. still no desire to see this.

after watching Whiplash, I've learned I'm not a Miles Teller fan. so that's 2 strikes against this movie for me.

Marvel's track record is a lot stronger.....so I would say Ant-Man stands a better chance at being successful.

He's one of the biggest turnoffs for the movie, for me. If I see it, it will be despite him.

He's annoying. His voice, his face. He simultaneously manages to look like a frat boy and a forty year old smoker at the same time. I can't buy him as an actor. Everything I see him in I don't see a character, I see Miles Teller. He's a human version of Droopy the dog.

I don't know how he has a career with that voice. I could buy him doing the voiceover for a depressed turtle in an animated film, but I can't buy him as a superhero -- not even the dorky, scrawny Ultimate Mr. Fantastic.

Who, by the way, was turned into a villain in the Ultimate comics a few years ago. They might as well go that route because this already isn't the Fantastic Four I care to see on screen. Might as well give us something we haven't seen before in a superhero movie. Let the leader of the group of heroes turn into a homicidal maniac by the third movie.

you people are NUTS. Miles Teller is what does it for me, I've become a big fan of his recently.

They may not be the "greatest" movies by artistic standards, but he has made some genuinely entertaining films across multiple genres lately. Even his goofy romcom stuff is damn good for the genre. Two Night Stand is one of the funniest movies I've seen in the last year.

And Whiplash was spectacular in every regard, I understand how people hate on some movies, but Whiplash is 100% not one of them.
