The Thin Red Line (1998)
dir. Terrence Malick

The Good: Masterful cinematography by John Toll (Braveheart, Almost Famous). Score composed by Hans Zimmer (The Lion King, Inception) and sung by the Melanesian choir is hauntingly beautiful. Incredible all-star ensemble cast. Nick Nolte being his usual awesome self. Sean Penn not in "full-retard" mode.

The Bad: A little over-philosophical.

The Bottom Line: Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line is, without a doubt, one of the finest anti-war movies ever made. Highly recommended for Criterion collectors, fans of the genre, and anybody who's into existential and philosophical films.

little over-philosophical is a HUGE Understatement. I really disliked this movie because of that right there. If i wanna see a war movie like this one tried to attempt i'd just watch Apocalypse Now. This movie is for Malick fans and art heads period.

[Show spoiler]Already, I've read some very strong positive and negative reactions to the movie. I read the novel at the beginning of the year, and this was perhaps my most anticipated movie of the year. I think the extremes on both sides of the debate about this movie should be ignored. The film is intellectually ambitious, and provides a unique artistic opportunity to the actors, all of whom portray multiple characters, sometimes different races and even gender.

Unlike the rigid (and appropriate) structure of the novel, the film immediately and constantly flits from one storyline to the next. I think this was necessary. It also emphasized the interconnectedness of the characters and their stories. So the movie never stays with one storyline for very long. Occasionally, a character from one period provides voice-over (and there is a lot of voice-over, with the movie keeping the novel's epistolary narrative) for a different period.

I thought the movie's structure worked. I also liked the use of the actors appearing as different characters across the separate stories. But sitting here, a couple of hours later, a dispassionate reflection makes me say that that while the film was indeed satisfying, I can't honestly say it was revolutionary in its vision. Certainly, very interesting, well-paced (the film is nearly three hours in length), and definitely worth seeing. But, yes, the book is better.

Cool. I'm really looking forward to this.

Malick's hit-or-miss for me. I love Thin Red Line and Badlands, but I found Days of Heaven and The New World unwatchable.

The plot is coherent enough to a degree, but what happens in it is as far as coherent as you can get

This afternoon I attended a screening of Pusher, a remake of earlier film about a terrible week in the life of a low-level drug pusher. This was a terrible movie. I hated it. The protagonist was incredibly, and unbelievably, stupid. An absolute must-miss. Avoid at all costs.

Hah, I'm asking myself that right now. I'm choosing to see one either notoriously bad flick (ie Gigli, Swept Away) or a notorious flop a week all leading up to Heavens Gate on CCblu in November. I'm not going for any rediculously bad comedies though (the blank Movies) because those ate too lazy to have any academic value. I'm talking about films that went out on a limb, with their beating ugly hearts exposed (ie no cynicism)

Walking Dead, whats wrong with the writing??? Im lost. There isnt any holes to the plot, well i havent noticed any. Maybe its because im scared sh1tless most of the time

Just characters doing silly dumb stuff, like

That and it tends to wallow in melodrama from time to time which can be a bit eye rolling. But the situations the characters get put into are drenched in tension, it knows how to do zombies and it looks great
