so UPS just delivered my new AAHD10 sub, ive been messing with it all day and i have a few questions...

I added poly fill that thin sheet it did have didnt do anything really.
i have my sub set to -15db on my reciever
i also set my lfe to 120hz on my reciever, double bass is on
my bass is at -6db should i leave to -10db

on my sub the volume is about 50% and the crossover on the sub is about 75% to max

does this seem right?

turn the subs cross over all the way to max. Keep your sub gain or volume level at 50 percent. On your receiver set the Sub to 0db. And let it break in for a while like that. Or run audessy and let it calibrate it if you have audessy

Also i just recently got mine. Can you turn your sub on and put your ear to it and tell me if you hear a hum or buzz come from it

Turn the Double Bass to OFF and leave the subwoofer on ON instead of AUTO ON. Let the sub run for a while and then calibrate your speakers again. The -15dB sounds a little low. You may have to turn it up a few dB's.

That wouldn't be good for your surge protector. It probably tells you not to do so, in your surge protector manual( would void warranty ).
My Panamax M5400-PM manual states:
"2. PROPER INSTALLATION: Panamax AC protectors must be directly plugged into a properly grounded 3-wire AC outlet. Extension cords*,non-grounded two prong adapters, or other non- Panamax surge products must not be used."

I know that some subwoofers do not come on fast enough or periodically go back to sleep if the sound is a little low. That is why ON may be preferred to AUTO ON.

I also recommend that if the subwoofer has left and right inputs, you should use a Y adapter (2 male, 1 female) and connect the sub cable to both inputs. This wakes the subwoofer faster.

is my hum/buzz problem something i can live with, or will it eventually get worse, and even hurt the sub? Can it cause an increase in my electric bill, since its something with the amp?

No, it won't affect your electric bill or anything else. I would not besurprised if it goes away by itself. However, if you decide to live with it, I would highly recommend a ground loop isolator.

could it be something that i could fix on my own by opeing up the sub and checking out the amp and wiring or something? I think i will live with it, only because i dont want to pay for shipping on it, Ill wait til something major happens, then ill use my warranty. The bass sounds fantastic though, and I cant hear buzz unless i get close to the speaker. . . so im done talking about it! Thanks guys

What ground loop isolator would you reccommend again?

The Ebtech HumX is cheaper at Amazon.

There are also a few more high end isolators by Jensen (Isomax) and Xitel. See links in the Ground Hum thread.

Default Crossover help?

I started to ramble about my home theatre upgrading but was getting too long. So I'll just ask my question and say hello. I'm using a Panasonic BD-dmp60 to decode and output uncompressed pcm to a Pioneer vsx-519v with direct or pure direct (I think direct still accepts uncompressed.)
I had a piece together system with a old KLH center channel, Polk t15 fronts, and old Sony towers with at least a 10" woofer (bu-307 or something like that for model number,) for surrounds. I'd have to tear out a bookshelf to use the towers for the front.
I got a set of Energy Take 5 classics to try a matched set instead of random speakers since a new center channel wasn't much cheaper then a whole set.
Anyway, instead of going with an Energy 8" sub I found this thread somehow and decided to get a HD-Sub 10. It looks great but I have a dilema. The frequency response said up to 250hz so I thought I was cool but the crossover only goes up to 130hz. Is there anyway to disable that or even change out a capacitor or resistor to make it go higher?
It says the energy speakers only go down to 115hz and my receiver only has the choice of 100hz or 150hz, no 125hz crossover

BD, While I am loving my HD-10, I found the BIC F12 being sold for under $200. What would you say about adding an F12 to the Theatre? Do you see any problems with doing so?

Just got off the phone with chris from TheDeepDiscount.com. He said they were having problems with the phones the last couple of days. But he was very nice, and very quick to make it right. He is sending me an email with prepaid shipping labels for ups to pick up my HDSUB12, and they will either Replace It with a new one, or if its easy enough to fix they will just repair it. So Hopefully this hum/buzz gets corrected, but I have to say besides the phones being crappy this morning and yesterday, that is pretty good Customer service, But Ill wait to say there Great until i receive these shipping Labels via email.

The best thing was that I didnt have to get snippy or irritated with him, he instantly said that they would replace it free of charge.

The Sub is awesome though, bass is deep and loud. Great addition for only $175. Depending on if these labels come, I would totally do business with them again. In fact I kinda want a 2nd HDSUB12 for the other side of my home theatre.....

Don't mess with the internal crossover of the subwoofer. It is part of the amp and there is no information about the circuits. It is much easier to replace the amp with a plate amp from Parts Express or other vendors, but even that is not a good option.

These are my suggestions:
  1. Turn the crossover on the back of the subwoofer all the way up to its maximum point.
  2. If your receiver has the option, set all your speakers to SMALL.
  3. Set the crossover in the receiver to 150Hz.
  4. Run the test tones inside the receiver or use an external calibration disc and make sure the levels of the tones through all the speakers, including the subwoofer, are the same. An SPL meter from Radio Shack is very useful.

Just remember that the crossover networks do not have precise cutoff points and have a gradual slope where the frequencies are cut off. It is possible that you make lose a few frequencies, but it will not be noticeable and really does not make any difference.

Save your money and upgrade your equipment.

No problem. Go ahead and do it. If you plan to use two subwoofers, read A Guide to Bass Management and A Guide to Subwoofers (Part II). They both have stickies.
