The films today most similar to Halloween and Friday the 13th would probably be, Wish Upon, Final Destination and the like. "Let's see how we can kill people". Movies that populated the "horror section" at the old local video stores.

But The Shining is beyond that. Meaning, I'm dropping it a huge compliment on being unlike those films I just mentioned.

I'm thinking you'd agree with me that The Shining shouldn't be compared to those inferior horror movies

.
As a fan of horror movies I get irritated when people start to “differentiate” by putting different labels on horror films once they become more ambitious than a slasher movie. Horror can encompass a huge range of subject matter and can go all the way from dumb to smart. Describing The Shining as a psychological thriller is factually wrong as it clearly is a haunted house movie with actual ghosts and stuff. Poltergeist is a haunted house movie in which absolutely nobody dies and it’s still a horror classic.

I do not consider Halloween to be inferior. Like The Shining it's a classic in it's genre.

I get ya. I can get behind that.

I used to be exclusively a horror fan

But as I got older I really appreciated drama, mind-F drama (you know, Enemy, Stoker, Eyes Wide Shut...etc), so in terms of classic horror, I am behind and not as polished

It looks like one of Grady's daughters faces right before he brought down the axe

Nobody with a love for the genre thinks it is an inferior movie. The reason why slasher movies got a bad rep is because they ripped off the hugely influential Halloween and they were inferior films when compared to Halloween. That doesn’t mean there aren’t some great slasher movies out there, but they are among the most generic of horror sub-genres and few (or none) are as artful as the Carpenter movie.

Yeah, mis-typed.
My bad.
Halloween is not inferior.

Everybody can calm down now

I admitted my typing-small-on-a-phone-while-no-longer-using-Tapatalk mistake.

But calling WISH UPON "horror" and calling THE SHINING "horror" definitely bunch the two together, and I was looking for possible separation.

Hey, guess what? Halloween rules!

Everything OK now?

Pretty sure that's how it usually works but Kubrick was a control freak known for involving himself in creating his film's marketing materials. There's documentation of him rejecting various Shining posters for example and I rather doubt he'd allow any text to appear on the final poster without it getting his approval first.

I think it was just Kubrick ego 😂

No wonder Kanye compares himself to him.

To me it's both, they are battling loneliness, cabin fever, Wendy is also battling fear of being stuck in the hotel with a murderous husband.

Yes it feels like a psychological thriller as much as a haunted house story, at least for me

I was thinking about this last night,

How would you guys feel about a Shining miniseries on HBO or something?

6-8 episodes and every episode could be a different tragedy that happened at the hotel during different periods.

And each episode is directed by a talented director. So one episode could be by Cary Fukunaga and another one could be by Ari Aster (director of Hereditary).

I think it could work. But you could never explain anything from The Shining. Every episode would be it's own contained story that has no connection to the movie. So you wouldn't do the Grady story or the Woman in the bathtub. They would be original stories about other tragedies that happened at the hotel.

Thoughts?

Why does everything need a prequel or a story to explain it? If you want these stories explained to you, close your eyes and make one up. Let this story go. We’ve had a masterpiece of a film and a terrible tv production. No more.

I think that would work better for 1408.

A few years ago there was talk of Mark Romanek (director of One Hour Photo) doing a prequel called The Overlook Hotel. Not sure what the status is, though.

Dr. Sleep was a big letdown for me. The Shining was a great haunted house tale, but Dr. Sleep was about a roving band of psychic vampires in RVs who use the site of the burned-out Overlook as a base of operations. Wonder how the filmmakers will try to use the connection to the Shining - if there will be flashbacks, etc. Since King is involved it wouldn't surprise if there would be flashbacks to the TV mini series, at least in regards to the look of the old hotel.

I really liked Dr Sleep. If they get a movie one right it could be great. I really hope they don't try and make it a PG/12 though.

Haven't read Dr. Sleep. I find King's writing not that interesting and engaging anymore. The last book I read of him was Cell, which was pretty entertaining. He really screwed up the movie though, which once again proves he should stick to writing books and stay far away from screenplays.

Yeah, his screenplays aren't that good - the dialogue is often cringe-worthy and it's never subtle. He tends to hit the viewer over the head too much.

Dr. Sleep will be an odd sequel - people expecting a haunted house story like The Shining are going to be disappointed.
