I suppose each director is given the chance to present the version of the film he feels most comfortable with. Columbus chose to offer both his theatrical and extended cuts; Cuarón and Newell chose their theatrical cuts as the definitive versions. Fair enough.

I shall miss the audio/visual commentaries on this second batch, though.

These sets are quite lovingly put together, and the sequelized documentary is well worth owning. I tend to be quite happy with the Ultimates, even if they aren't the be-all end-all of what Blu-ray can do.

Actually, Goblet of Fire will have the "In-Movie Experience" PiP feature from the HD-DVD carried over (the press release got revised the next day to include that and promotional materials like trailers and the HBO special). That leaves Prisoner of Azkaban and Order of the Phoenix as the odd ducks out in the series without PiP tracks (unless they do one for OotP's Ultimate Edition). Ah, well. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for a OotP extended cut.

what's the audio specs for the next two discs? Will Azkaban be in DTS 6.1 since the other bluray edition featured Dolby Digital EX sound? From what I can tell, only the first three films were released with a matrixed rear center channel of sound.

According to this site they will both have LPCM 5.1.

That's a little strange...would it be so hard to keep things consistent?

At least the packaging will match nicely...(I bet they change it for the last one, Lost Season 6 I'm looking at you)

Oh, I stand corrected. I was only thinking of the Blu-ray, which had the Focus Points but no PiP. So since OotP will undoubtedly get its HD-DVD In Movie Experience carried over, that leaves Prisoner of Azkaban as the odd man out. Shame. I'm sure Alfonso would've loved to have done one, but he's probably too busy with Gravity's pre-production.

Uh, you do know that the DTS-MA audio is sourced from these PCM masters...

oh I know that, but I was referring to what I thought was
Azkaban sporting a 6.1 soundmix, when in fact it never has or was released as such.

Is it 100% true that 3&4 have nothing extra on the movie?

It's been said here before, it's not WB's fault, it's the director's choice to make it extended or not.

That better not be an excuse when OOTP comes out. That movie screams of an extended cut

Of course! I really hope OOTP comes with the extended cut, the movie needs it.

Definitely, though they're fairly impressive Photoshop jobs. For OotP, the altered film logo to accommodate Ron's head is a big giveaway. I also think for HBP, WB's either going to use the original poster art/single-disc DVD art or they're going to cobble together something new. The reason why is because they've been keeping a running theme throughout the covers of the trio+one other character. The same applies to OotP, though I actually wouldn't be surprised to see them use that international poster. They've also been customizing the bottom banners by theme, so I expect them to be shaped differently and have added elements to them. Oh, and those year numbers are too thin in comparison to 1-4.

I echo everyone's sentiments that OotP needs an extended cut badly. 45 minutes is a heck of a lot, and it shows. Even if they only give us, say, 20 of those minutes, I think pacing would still be greatly improved. It all rests with Yates, and I hope he's smart enough to know how badly the fans want this footage.

it should be his job to know that every potter fan was disappointed with the pacing and missing footage on OOTP
