SACD is making a comeback? I'm not following this format's progress, but I assumed it was dead by now.

Literally dozens of popular albums have been released or are announced to be coming out. The major labels don't care anymore, so they are either licensing out their albums or letting foreign divisions handle the work. For instance, MFSL is going to release the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds on SACD for the first time. Warner in Japan just announced several of their DVD-Audios, like the Eagles' Hell Freezes Over, will be released as SACDs. And Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here is finally coming out on SACD after years of delays.

Or you can buy an OPPO Bluray player and get SACD capability in the mix. Honestly, SACD is nowhere near dead.

Well, I was looking at the BDP-93, but for three hundred more, I could buy a metal gear solid 4 80GB playstation from amazon and get sacd, blu-ray and ps3 function. (Shrug)

It depends upon how you define dead, but in 2010, SACD sales were so small in the United States, the RIAA stopped reporting them. In 2009, SACD, DVD Audio and Cassette singles combined (I know putting those together doesn't make sense, but it's how the RIAA reported them) sold a total of 100,000 units and grossed $4 million in revenue at list prices. That's nothing more than a rounding error.

I have had an OPPO, loved to play SACDs on it, etc., but it's become nothing more than a small niche format. There's nothing wrong with niches - that's usually where the really good stuff is -- but that's the reality.

All physical music carriers are becoming niche formats. Labels have given up and are conceding to downloads.

Except that's not helping much because the downloads business is primarily a singles business. Looking at downloads as "album equivalents" (downloaded albums + downloaded singles divided by 10), there were 199.34 million downloaded album equivalents sold in 2010 + 225.8 million CDs = 425 million albums. That compares with 942.5 million CD albums sold in 1999.

So downloads aren't even coming close to making up for the decline in physical products.

The U.S. music business overall declined in 2010 another 6.8% in units and 10.9% in revenue (at list or suggested selling price). It's now at 47% of its 1999 peak not accounting for inflation.

CD units are at 24% of their 1999 peak.

The one thing the video business has going for it is that there's no equivalent of the "single".

Only because the masses want music and not high definition quality. Of course, there's FLAC downloads but we still haven't gotten to DSD downloads or multichannel download capability.

SACDs may not sell enough to call it more than a niche;however, sales are one thing--released material is another. Released SACDs have increased markedly this past year.

found this on sa-cd.net:

>>Hello,

>>Yes, there were discussions about releasing some of Rush’s albums on SACD. Unfortunately although the sound was great, it was a commercial failure and as far as we know, Sony is no longer making new ones.

>>Thanks for writing.

That is sad! I just purchased After Midnight by the Nat King Trio and am considering Black Coffee by Peggy Lee. Rush would have been a nice addition to the growing collection.

Three new Nat King Cole SACDs were recently released:

The Nat King Cole Story
Just One of those Things
St. Louis Blues

I picked up the Story 2-disc set. Sound quality is astonishing.

Also, coming up August 1 is Cat Stevens' Tea for the Tillerman. I'm going to be all over that.

I have Nat King Coles After Midnight and the sound quality is great. I will get the Cat Stevens Tea for the Tillerman as it is an old favourite.

I'd like those too, but I'm more interested in Analogue Productions' ongoing Blue Note series. I just ordered six more, including Lou Donaldson - Time Is Right, Dizzy Reece - Soundin' Off and Duke Jordan - Flight To Jordan.

Just ordered Dire Straits - Love Over Gold SHM-SACD from CD Japan. Works out to CDN$55 shipped.

The S/T release was so amazing that I couldn't resist.

I hear you DB. I'm trying to control myself but resistance my be futile when it comes to some SHM-SACD titles.
