They have to be close if it opens in 6 months! I really like Jonah Hill, and I'm glad he's on board again, but if they are adding cast members this late in the game, I'm worried they might have to push the film back.

Weinstein said something about surprise cameos. He might be one of them. But if they announce it publicly it's hardly a surprise, is it?

I hope they can finish on time and not have to push back the date.

Tarantino has done things like this before, most recently with Inglorious Basterds. This isn't the first time, and it won't be the last, where he adds last minute names into his movie. It'll make it's date, easy. No worries.

WILL SMITH EXPLAINS WHY HE PASSED ON ‘DJANGO UNCHAINED’

Back when Quentin Tarantino was sprinting through the casting process on his upcoming ‘Django Unchained,’ an unconventional name was attached to the lead role of a vengeful slave seeking to free his wife from a vicious plantation owner. That name was Will Smith, Mr. “Getting Jiggy With It,” who was rumored to be willing to tarnish his clean-cut image to get down and dirty with Tarantino for the benefit of a potentially controversial project. Smith eventually passed, though, and the part went to Jamie Foxx.

Today, Smith explains why.

And controversy had supposedly nothing to do with it. Instead, it was simple scheduling issues that prevented Smith from committing to ‘Django.’ At least, that’s what the mega-watt star tells Empire (via The Playlist) as part of their lengthy profile on Tarantino. On why he passed, Smith says:

Quote:
I came really close. It was one of the most amazing screenplays I had ever, ever seen. I was in the middle of ‘Men In Black 3′ and [Tarantino] was ready to go, and I just couldn’t sit with him and get through the issues, so I didn’t want to hold him up. That thing’s going to be ridiculous. It is a genius screenplay.
So if you really wanted to see Smith in a Tarantino film, you can thank ‘Men In Black 3’ for ruining it. Truthfully, Smith would have been an inspired choice. No offense to Foxx, but Smith has been cruising and could use a jolt that a Tarantino collaboration instantly brings. Because Smith’s to-do list currently reads like ‘I Am Legend 2,’ ‘Bad Boys 3,’ and possibly ‘I, Robot 2.’ (And if it’s an “amazing screenplay” what “issues” did he have to work out with Tarantino?…)

Granted, the actor tells the BBC he’s not really interested in becoming the “Sequel Guy.” But roles in Tarantino films are kind of once-in-a-lifetime. And now we’ll be left wondering about what might have been as we watch Smith trade barbs with Martin Lawrence in another potentially bombastic Michael Bay blockbuster.

The way I read this is that Smith was worried it wasn't his normal type of movie and that he might have wanted to tone down the script from what it was. I really think Smith would have been great in the role, but maybe it was better he left in the end. I think Foxx will do really well, so I'm not worried about it. Just interesting to wonder "what if?".

I think Smith just wanted a "sure thing" in MIB III, seeing as he hasn't had a box office hit in five years. Plus, I suspect Django has the potential to offend a lot of people, which Smith wouldn't want to be a part of.

He's made a fair amount of career moves that have offended me.

Usually those are done by marketing companies. The editor is usually fairly busy with actually editing the movie to be working with the executives and everyone else who wants input in a trailer.

Couldn't agree more. I'm not a fan of many of his films, but I decided to give the trailer a shot and I was impressed and really liked the tone that the trailer makes the movie seem like. If the movie has a similar tone to the trailer, I'll be happy.

I'm sure Smith wanted his usual 20+ million fee as well. I doubt they would have given him half that for this.

I seriously doubt that. He KNOWS Quentin films don't have MASSIVE Budgets for the Normal Rates of the (usual) Large NAME Cast(s), so he would have taken whatever rate the other Main (LEAD) Names would be getting. Obviously he has PLENTY of $$$$$$$$ in the bank, so he could afford to do this type of film every now & then.

He would have to actually do a smaller type film just once for me to believe that ...(and his Jersey Girl cameo doesn't' count

Not a big Leo fan but i think with this and The Great Gatsby i might be getting my mind changed. Inception was ok but still not convinced. Could be my slight hate of Titanic

Still, i think the above comment about pay cheques got me thinking. Big name stars if they've been artistically inclined would take a pay cut to appear in something they like the sound of. It's not as if they've not got enough money in the bank. I'd negotiate a gross of the film instead of a completely up front fee

Liked the movie a lot but honestly, as an actor, Leo just doesn't resonate with me one bit. I've just never got into his performances. Maybe it's me still having Titanic and the 'pretty' boy who used to star in them to what he currently does. Guys transitioned very well though but like i said, i just can't get into his performances

That's really odd. I've never seen Titanic, but I think Inception, Shutter Island, Body of Lies & Departed are phenomenal movies. I quite like Leo, could be because I've never seen Titanic.

I know exactly what you mean. He is obviously a very talented actor...but for some reason, he just doesnt seem to have the "IT" factor that puts him in the upper echelon of legends like Pachino, Deniro, etc. Scorsese tried so hard to catapult him into that stratosphere but he's just not on that level. That said, I appreciate the fact he gives 110% in every role he's given.
