Yep, but he's also confused I think with DNR vs a new scan. A lot of older scans have been badly DNR'd to remove grain - this especially true with Paramount and Universal's practices. This is probably what he is thinking and likely confusing this with a new scan - doesn't understand the two differences.

You're giving him too much credit.

He doesn't want his current copy to be obsolete so he's already decided that it's better than the new one.

Oh vey. No. I'm just not as obsessive as other folks here. I don't have a 100" TV and I watch movies with headphones. Sometimes, even, on DVD.
I also manage to read others' rants without dubbing them 'dopey'.
Bottom line point was in response to someone's 'why now?' and queries about remastered sequels with commentary, docs, etc. 'Duh' simple fact that studios will use any reason to keep milking a cash cow.

The original Rocky is one of my all time faves and one of the few movies that I can just sit down and watch at any time. I actually enjoy all the sequels so this is must but I do wish the extras from the Rocky DVD set were included. I guess I will just keep the copy I have.

I stand by my comment - the original film was never meant to look like crystal ('Rocky IV', however...1,000% synthetic MTV). I'm keeping the old set. Just one dude's op though, as I'm sure this'll sell.
Actually no. It comes courtesy of MGM/FOX taking advantage of the 90th anniversary of MGM. RoboCop and Rocky Have had new remastered scans and while Fargo and The Good, The Bad, The Ugly are scheduled for releases later this years. On the other hand several titles are being re-released (albeit same disc) as part of the promotional push.

That being said Rocky should look like film which the previous version falls short of.

Personally I only care for the first film and don't mind waiting for a stand alone release.

I love Rocky, really enjoy Rocky II-III, loathe IV, really enjoy the first half of V, and adore Rocky Balboa. A great series full of ups and downs that sticks the landing. That said, even if Rocky II-V were new editions, I wouldn't rebuy the boxset. I'm pleased with what I currently have.

The original Rocky on the other hand, I'd definitely buy the stand-alone release.

That's all well and good except for the fact that you can sell your current box and make enough money to buy the new box. If you're actually paying for the new disc to upgrade your existing box you're doing it wrong.

I am the same. Though perhaps not as enthusiastic about 2 and 3. Whilst being a little more forgiving of the conceit behind the second half of 5.

I find the ending of V to be very sad. Here's this man who was the greatest boxer in the world and he's devolved into a bar fight as his victory.

You're right, I'm an idiot. I didn't realize how much the old one was selling for! Selling the old box and getting the new one is definitely the way to go.

Technically, there's no reason for new editions of Rocky II-V, all of those were AVC encodes and looked extremely good -- Rocky I is the one that needs a new scan as it was an older MPEG-2 title.

I have not seen the BD sequels, but this seems to be the consensus and looking at the screencaps, they seem quite solid.

I'm excited for this set. I've held off buying the old Blu set for a while.

This is funny considering I just bought the older set for $13.49 this past September.

It's dopey because what you really mean is, "I don't care about a new transfer." There is no actual reason a 4K scan (assuming it's done properly) would be a detriment to the film, nor would it (assuming you want to see the film look the way it's meant to look) matter what size your TV is or how you're listening to it. An improvement to the master is going to be there regardless. As others have pointed out, you're using inaccurate reasoning to say the difference isn't actually there, when what you mean is, you're not interested in the difference.

Someone actually has a problem with a fresh 4K OCN scan of Rocky? Seriously?

So early talk on the Robocop Blu is positive. Between Robo and The Terminator it seems like MGM is doing right by these remasters of their dated early discs.

Can't speak to the old U.S. blu, but quick peek at new 'Robocop' remaster is indeed noticeably miles better than old UK blu.

I only have ROCKY in the "Own the Moments" triple feature with Raging Bull and The Usual Suspects. After seeing how great the 4k RM of RoboCop looks I am anxious for Rocky now. Count me in on this set.

Things at MGM certainly seem to be looking up. If the Rocky remaster turns out as well as Robocop then there will be exciting things to look forward to (Escape From New York, anyone?). As far as the Rocky films, I just want the first one but I'm going to have to spring for the set if it's the only way to get the original film.
