Nagy's point isn't even really about science, it's about physics (you know, gravity, mass, opposing forces, resistance of metal...)

The first time I ever realized that having a near infinite strength for a superhero would still not allow you to do anything and everything was way back in the days, with the classic JRJ Iron Man arc "Demon in the Bottle", when Stark, partially drunk, tried to help first reponders to the site of a derailed Train transporting dangerous chemicals.
Feeling very confident, he pulled up the most dangerous container full of liquid chemicals, straight up in the air, and at that point the metal piece he was holding the container with broke, sending the container crashing down and spilling all of its content.

Iron Man's strength or flight wasn't at fault, but rather the structural make of the handle bar and the metal resistance.

In this case Nagy is arguing that even with an infinite strength, if you punch something with a much larger mass than you, you would either take a chunk out of it, or if it resists the impact it would actually send -you- flying opposite, according to the principle of opposing forces.
One reason it could work though would be some sort of gravity cancelling field, or something that would increase your own mass by quite a bit (to send a 1.5+ton thing flying like a soccer ball).

Now, this is also about suspension of disbelief, and you have to ask yourself if you can look past these "little" things or not

PS: If the movie follows the original story -at all-, Cruise becoming stronger with every iteration is not the result of the "alien power". Well, not directly at least.

Well if you watch one of the trailers you see that he gets creamed by what appears to be a big military truck then the scene where he flips a car, I only guessed he is stronger due to the aliens being of a hive nature and possibly allowing him to be more powerful or allowing him to adapt.

I watched the making of and they
[Show spoiler]show a scene of Tom and Blunt running in their mech suits, she runs around a parked car and he just shoves it out of the way like its nothing

Cruise has practically made all of the best Sci-Fi movies in the past decade, but this is just plain stupid.

He's incredibly smart and is a perfectionist when it comes to small detail. He designed the pod ship in oblivion with real science behind it.

So why is he letting this slip here and dumb down what seems to be a pretty clever Sci-Fi movie?
It's a good thing that you dont have tons of unrealistic sci-fi fantasy films in your collection because that would make you a....oh wait....never mind.

The mecha suits were basically excellent - they had weight and they were shown to move in awkward realistic ways. Wasnt that good enough?

No one properly knows, and to be fair it's fairly inconsequential to the plot, the only theory really offered up is that
[Show spoiler]they need the Earth's atmosphere.

I enjoyed the film, I thought it was reasonable fun and had a lot of attitude and charisma to it, plus it's nice to have a blockbuster that's simple and self-contained for the most part, no comic book continuity or franchise building (granted if this is a hit, studio execs will do anything including but not limited to sacrificing their first born son to get it greenlit).

But I have one question concerning the Deus ex machina ending that left me a bit hung up and dry:
[Show spoiler]Does that mean the invasion is over? Somehow the destruction of the time traveling mahicky means that it somehow transported Tom Cruise to the day before but the event also happened the day before? And if the invasion is over why are the troops still getting ready to assault the beach? It was all a bit rushed and I wasn't overall keen on it.

Physics is the name of a branch of natural science that studies Nature and its forces, yes, that is true.

I dunno either. Probably the weakest part of the movie.

Maybe someone who read the novels can shed some light?
