I know, but what would be the benefit of getting rec2020 if your TV's color coverage is only enough for rec709?

Just bit the bullet on this one and bought...upgrading from the Samsung. I've searched the thread and seen people post a list of free movies to pick from after purchasing this player? Do I need to register my player somewhere to get these? Ordered from Best Buy's website...

It's not, it's a 10-bit panel. However the SDR modes might only send out 709.

10 bit pixel depth doesn't guarantee rec2020. Rec2020 requires 10 bit, but not the other way around.

Many reviews of the KU6300 have covered the fact that the color gamut is only enough for rec709.

So the lack of SDR 2020 support shouldn't dissuade you.

Use the link provided in the post above mine. They'll ask you attach a copy of the receipt (a screenshot from your order will do) and they'll also ask for the serial number on the player.

I tried out a BDP-S6700 and sometimes the screen brightness would change on it's own half a second after a scene in a movie changes when I was playing a movie in Vudu or about half a second aftering entering the Netflix app. I have dynamic contrast disabled on my TV so it can't be my TV and my Roku Ultra does not have this issue either. Does the UBP-X800 have this issue? Does the UBP-X800 switch back to 60p mode after watching a movie in 24p mode in Netflix and Vudu?

I have the same thing going on with screen brightness, but I always thought that was the "smart LED" setting on my KS8000. As far as 60 - 24 fps, I have mine set to auto and switched from standard 4K to Billy Lynn at 60 fps and then back and there wasnt any issue.

When redeeming my 2 free movies, they gave the option to buy up to 3 additional 4K's at 14.40 to 19.40 each. I just picked up Pineapple Express at $14.40, no tax, free ship for everything.

Surely I'm not the only one who's tempted to display this on end to mimic the monolith from 2001?

If you are going to get the Sony UBP-X800 mostly for watching Netflix on it, it's going to be wasted money. Your better sticking with your Roku Ultra or get a Nvidia Shield streaming box.

Now at my local Best Buy, they finally got rid of all the physical media and physical media players except for video games consoles.

Depends. Netflix on the Sony is better than my experience with the other devices.

My Roku Ultra and Premiere have been buggy pieces of shit.

How are they gonna sell new release movies for corporate if they don't stock any physical media? people still buy physical media and players, if true it was some dumb manager or executive with Best Buy who made that decision for that location. I hope this isn't Best Buy's plans for other locations, that would be a nightmare for their customers.

Default Question

I am about to pull the trigger on a new Sony 4K HDR tv and possibly this player as well. I have a 2014 Sony soundbar CT770 that has 4K pass through. Will this soundbar also works with HDR? or do I also need a soundbar that specifically have HDR pass through? Thanks!

I hope you're waiting for Sony's Dolby Vision compatible displays. Also, there is no word yet if this player or the ES model will gain DV support. That would be utterly stupid on Sony's part, but hey this is Sony!

Don't go all trigger happy just yet.

The only thing you can do is try the soundbar after you've finally made a purchase. The website doesn't mention if it has HDMI 2.0a chips. If it's from 2014, I'd say maybe not.

You can always use HDMI 2 on any regular UHD disc player to your soundbar and HDMI 1 to the display.

I have a Roku Ultra. Roku Ultra does not support 24p, which means I will get 3:2 pulldown on 24p material. I tried a Nvidia Shield but it does not support automatic refresh rate switching to 24p in the Netflix and Vudu apps even though the device itself supports 24p refresh rate. I returned the Nvidia Shield for a different reason though. On the Roku Ultra I'm sometimes getting chirping noises when streaming through the Vudu app sometimes.

I have never been to a Best Buy that does not have physical media for movies and music. Sure one Best Buy location near me does not have a huge selection of blu-rays and CD's but still gets the popular new releases. I also sometimes end up ordering a blu-ray from Best Buy online because it was not available in-store or any other store locally but was available through ordering through Best Buy's website.

@ my local Best Buy stores, they have less and less physical discs (Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray, 4K Blu-ray). They aren't selling because they are too expensive, and besides everyone is streaming nowadays. People love streaming movies and documentaries from their apps in their $100 3D BR players...and play music too.

The ultra hi-end market (4K) with physical BR discs is not as popular as streaming from 4K apps in inexpensive BR players from LG, Sony, Panasonic.
By year's end 4K 3D BR players are going to be on sale for hundred bucks, and with apps in them. ...Black Friday, Boxing Day, all that Christmas jazz.
IMO (if not $100, then $119). Samsung has one you can get now for $179

This Sony 800, when you discount the two 4K BR movies you get for free, is $249 (MSRP). ...Won't be long till $149

I hope they put Atmos in all 3D Blu-rays. And Amazon is our best friend, because HMV (they are closing next month, to be replaced by turntables and LPs) and Walmart are not the places for 4K Blu-rays either. My local Walmart stores have ZERO 4K Blus. And their 3D Blus is almost dead, except for the Diney ones @ $40 to $60. Very true, very alarming, very frustrating, very greedy, ...people now stream, and for good reasons right there.

So, is the Sony UBP-X800 any good with 4K? It seems that people like it, from what I've read so far.

As to be available in Canada...I would believe that it should be here soon.
Amazon.ca? Costco?
