I hate to keep the Ripley mother tangent going but to me the deleted scene was not needed to show Ripley can care for Newt, it was obvious she treats her like a surrogate daughter in Aliens even without the deleted scene.

I agree that Ripley's devotion to Newt can be considered (from the theatrical release) as an inherent maternal devotion to a strong, capable young girl that Ripley realizes needs someone to protect her. She spent the events before their arrival working on her own, alone and without any family because they all died. She was in severe shock and self-preservation mode before the team found her.
Basically, Ripley saw this girl on the verge of going feral.
Ripley, being a decent human being, goes out of her way to try and connect with Newt and get her out of the hell she was living in her own mind. Because Ripley knows how to push peoples' emotional triggers and get them to become motivated, she uses these same tactics on Newt. This, in turn, causes Ripley to bond with Newt in ways she couldn't predict.

This works fine from a theatrical release point of view.
I do, however, find that scene where she learns that her daughter had passed away, and the loss of such a discovery to be a little stronger emphasis and punch on Newt and Ripley's relationship from a narrative perspective.
But, ultimately, was it required?
Nah. In fact, in some ways the slow transition of Ripley from "I need to help this girl on the verge of complete breakdown" to finally going "I will protect her with my life, like I would my own daughter" comes across swimmingly in the theatrical cut.

Yep that is a retcon, heck Vader and Anakin Skywalker during early scripts were orginally meant to be two separate characters, that father twist idea came after the first the film and it was never planned.

There are additions to a story that introduce new concepts and themes in future installments. I don't call these a true 'retcon'. This is just "How do I expand the lore and/or add twists to an existing storyline that has been set up?"

A retcon is where Superboy realizes that there are several realities that are conflicting with each other, so he makes a punch that produces a Deus Ex Machina in which any and all realities then become extinct, thus fixing story conflicts from past written histories.
A retcon is erasing a current reality, and replacing it with a new one, thus erasing any continuity/canon that came before.
Adding TO the current story themes is not the same thing.
Erasing the history of a story, unambiguously, is a retcon.
For example, Luke being related to Leia, introduced in part 3 - adding a new surprise/twist, but not negating events from the past. Not a retcon.
Vader was 'seduced' by the Dark Side. Anakin 'died' when Vader took over; the implication can be that Anakin was erased once Vader took over. Is this a retcon? Not really. It's Ben Kenobi being Shady AF when it comes to straight up being honest with Luke. Which is a little Dark Sidey, if you ask me. But not a retcon.

A retcon is completely altering what is established canon and just plain rewriting key plot points to alter the story - ever-so-conveniently - into a mold that the writers want to proceed with, meaning that they are lazy and wrote themselves into a corner. So, any easy way out is to PUNCH all that previous lore from existence, and start with a clean slate.

A more viable term for a 'retcon' in Star Wars is midiclorians. Did we hear about them after people pooped their pants in anger after that little reveal? I don't recall. But that, in a way is a retcon, because everything after that has tried to ignore the concept was ever introduced. That's more of a retcon than other examples presented recently.

Early scripts and previous iterations of material before actual release to the screen are not "canon". They are the natural progression from concept, to end result.
Otherwise, everything that was ever written was 'retconned' before release. Since, every story has been revised and rewritten before final release.

Luke and Leia being bro and sis and Vader being their daddy isn't a retcon. A retcon would be in the Prequels if Lucas changed it to Chewy and Leia really being bro and sis and Mace Windu being their daddy.

It looked beautifully filmic and the colors now closer to the 35mm prints. If I were a betting person I'd say this will maybe be coming to disc next year in time for Disney's new Alien movie.
