Yeah, that's also my favorite of the whole franchise. Perfection from beginning to end.

Yeah.......all the movies have their moments. I know with the complaints about Moore's version of Bond being a bit too hammy, but one of my favorite "Bond" moments was in "For Your Eyes Only", when he tells Locque "I believe you left this pin with Ferrara", throws the pin at him and kicks the car over the cliff. I thought that a nice brutal/cold change of pace for Moore.

Octopussy is too gross for me to own, never bought the big set since that and a few others I dont care for (Thunderball, octo, living daylights and the final Pierce) Favorite is Russia with Love and Casino, and all the special features. AmazonMgm actually have put out a few new docs lately which would be nice on disc, in particular the music one

It's my favourite Connery Bond film. It's like if Hitchcock directed 007.

Favourite Moore is Octopussy. It's sooooo much fun.

Since it hasn't been mentioned yet I gotta put in a word for Octopussy. It's the most purely enjoyable Bond of the entire series for me. I love its "everything but the kitchen sink" mentality -- a bit of Raiders-style jungle action, a Cold War bombing subplot, not one but two aerial sequences, a crackerjack extended train sequence, lots of local Indian flavor, memorable villains/henchmen galore. Maud cuts a very striking figure despite her acting limitations, not to mention her troupe of scantily-clad acrobats (in particular, the two who escort Kamal to his meeting with Octopussy at the palace are among the most drop-dead gorgeous of the entire series). Also love the knife-throwing twins and yes, even Bond dressed as a clown as that whole bomb-chase segment shows him getting really worried for once! I'm still not entirely clear on Octopussy's connection to Orlov and the whole jewel-smuggling scheme but it's a measure of how fun the movie is that I don't care.

It also contains Moore's finest Bond moment acting-wise: the scene in the train car where he confronts Orlov and gets wise to the bomb plot. Berkoff's another real presence in the movie. As in Rambo and Beverly Hills Cop he shamelessly chews the scenery into a pulpy mass while providing a real threat for the hero. Was gobsmacked to learn from the From Roger Moore With Love documentary that he and Moore were old friends from his Saint days (he guest-starred in three episodes plus one of the movies).

By the way I can't recommend that doc enough. There's loads of home movies from his personal archive, some of it shot by Moore himself. You get to see the mysterious Octopussy in some "cheeky" poolside action at the Moore home, slurping spaghetti, etc., and even Bond and Max Zorin Christmas shopping together in the Swiss Alps during a break from filming! (A very laidback Walken is among the interviewees.) Most of the interviews are with his kids and it's just an excellent doc from start to finish. It's a lean 79 mins and the disc is barebones but great re-watch value if you're a Moore fan (and who isn't? ).

[EDIT] Markgway and others - Re: that first sentence -- sorry, didn't see your posts in time!

Personally, my "if Hitchcock ever directed a 007 film" nominee is definitely On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

It's tough to choose one, but From Russia With Love may be my favorite Bond film, however!

As much as Madonna's "Die Another Day" is ultimately a misfire IMO, I would still be really interested in a synthy, electro dance Bond theme. I've always thought "Sweet Dreams" by the Eurythmics would have been an AWESOME theme.

Nice post!

The impending release of the Connery 4K Collection has led to numerous comments on the overall Bond film series, which have been fun to read. As someone who grew up loving the Bond films, and who is old enough to have seen most of the Moore films (and beyond) on opening day, I enjoy reading contemporary comments on some of the films which received their fair amount of criticism back in the day, such as Moonraker, Octopussy, A View To A Kill, etc.

The truth is, these are really enjoyable, and very well made Bond films, which unfortunately suffer from a few, brief moments of juvenile humor. And because of that, some Bond fans have downgraded them unfairly due to these (fleeting) moments.

Moonraker is an outstanding Bond film, overall. Its highlights are too numerous to mention. But because we have a 2-second shot of a pigeon doing a double-take, as well as the Jaws character briefly speaking to his newfound girlfriend near the climax, the whole film gets ridiculed. Octopussy has the embarrassing Tarzan yell, and one or two other (extremely brief) cringe-worthy moments. And A View To A Kill has the Beach Boys song, and the face-palm moment when Bond swings from the fire truck ladder. Without question, these are all embarrassing moments. But in a 2-hour-plus movie, are they really enough to torpedo an entire film? If you remove these (extremely brief) moments of puerile humor, you have a 2-hour film that is pretty damn solid!

(And we won't mention the elephant playing the slot machine in Diamonds Are Forever, or the cringe-inducing scene with Blofeld dressed in drag in the same film, or the ice palace nor the invisible car in Die Another Day, or...)

I absolutely loved No Time to Die. I thought it ticked all the boxes for a climatic blockbuster, it was big and bold and operatic and it looked gorgeous. The ending made me weep.
