Difficult to believe that we will be waiting now for September announcements. Where the heck did this year go? Criterion has been doing a bang-up job with Blu ray.

Checking out the extras of The Killing:

Restored transfer of Stanley Kubrick's 1955 noir feature Killer's Kiss
Will The Killing include a HD-transfer of Killers Kiss????

More so Nolan being pushed as the new director in that list.

Kept on looking at Algiers on dvd so glad I held off. Great month overall, criterion are definitely stepping up a gear after a slow start to the year.

More than likely.

The "Blow Out" blu-ray includes a 1080p transfer of "Murder à la Mod." Most other supplements are upscaled to 1080i, as well.

Man, The Warped Ones from that Eclipse set is the film I can't wait to watch in this month's batch (well since I haven't seen it).

Havn't seen the movie yet but when I saw the cover I thought of Scarface. It's Octavio!

To each their own.
Don't get me wrong, that's how I purchase all of my films...B&N sales, and the occasional Amazon sale. Every now and again, deep discount or Borders will throw me a bone, but I don't spend more than $25 at all. That is "my" personal limit on how much I feel "comfortable" spending on blind buys.

Hey CC, "its like deja vu all over again"

By the way, I forgot that Murder was also in 1080P on Blow Out, so I am almost assured that Kiss will be in 1080P too. Thanks for the reminder.

The Killing and Cul-de-Sac are ones I am going to have to pick up for sure.

Also, their cover art is very nice! Nice work Criterion.

So, blu-ray.com announces the criterion titles for august on the front page, and the average american audience shows up :

"Where do all these Criterion movies come from? I think I've only ever heard of one or two. Only the Thin Red Line comes to mind. "

"Rats... saw Anderson in the article title and was hoping for Rushmore or Tenenbaums. " (the obligatory Wes Anderson fanboy)

"yay...zzzzz....I miss the old days when Criterion would balance out their art-house releases with films like Robocop and The Rock!"

and of course, the 100s of "OMFG ITS KUBRICK" rants.

More to come ?

Would be nice if they got to release Brazil since I think I'll pass on the Universal release. Where's their SPARTACUS? Well If... and The Killing are great news!
Yeah I'm still waiting on LA HAINE.
Would buy CHARADE right away but I'm waiting for a good price on it. Does the B&N sale also apply to online? Wasn't there another online retailer who also put Criterion on sale?
Yes, the Barnes & Noble sales are good online. You just can't use coupons on top of the sales normally. Sometimes Deep Discount has Criterion sales, but that company is notorious for their terrible customer service and shipping times. Criterion also has online sales directly from their website periodically. Earlier this year I bought a bunch of Blu's from them for around $20 each in a big sale.

I thought the film was okay, clearly a beginners effort. The concept was pretentious but the highlight to me was the photography which he did himself. The print looked very good in that regard.

It's funny because it's kind of a drag to be able to harshly critique a Kubrick film. But given the circumstances , yes it is a student effort but the potential is clearly there in some very effective scenes, although they aren't many.

If you were there then you saw he fallen pants episode with the event photographer? Mazursky killed it.

August will be quite the month. I saw Algiers in SD last year, and it is very thought-provoking; no wonder it was required viewing by the US Central Command. The other films will all be first viewings for me. I'm looking forward to Secret Sunshine, but I don't know whether I'll be able to handle it.

You can actually watch this movie on youtube, and judge for yourself. Here is the first part. I was shocked it was on there.
