Cul-de-sac and The Killing will be pre-orders for sure. The S. Korean film looks interesting too.

I love Black Orpheus, but have never seen the version by Cocteau. How do the two films compare?

Really pleased with the announced titles though I am disappointed and pleased at the same time with The Killing. Killer's Kiss is included, which is nice, but I can't see Criterion doing a standalone release for Fear and Desire which makes me feel as if this is another home video generation it's going to skip. I thought it just got a restoration too

They're really quite different.

Maybe the Kubrick estate still doesn't want it released? I know that Fear and Desire is in the public domain (at least, that's what I thought) but Criterion tends to do what the estate of a director wants. Look at what happened with the Cassavetes Box set, for example.

Getting The Killing and Killer's Kiss is great news. Of course, we knew it was coming, but I'm glad nonetheless. Nice cover, too. I unfortunately haven't seen any of the others (definitely need to get Battle of Algiers) but they seem really interesting.

I was actually at an LA screening of Fear and Desire late last year. It isn't public domain, but the kodak archive it is owned by sounded sensitive to both Kubrick's wishes that it never get released and the desire for film historians and the public to see this film. The short story was that they were pissing off kubrick in the late 80s with screenings, and he got Scorcese (who's working with the archive) to put a stop to them, rather bluntly. They're loosening up again and they didn't rule out an actual release of some type, but were also very evasive with an answer.

Murder a la Mod is 1080p on Blow Out.

As usual, some great stuff from Criterion. The Vigo set looks interesting.

Are you lumping Kubrick in with Spielberg and Nolan on your 'over-rated pop star' list on any substantive basis or are you just observing that he's become something of a flavor-of-the-week?

Time to hock my Algiers DVD set.

Hopefully Criterion uses the same digipack for the blu-ray release. No reason to change a good thing.

In what universe is Kubrick considered "flavor of the week"?

I love both! I think you'll enjoy Army of Shadows, but it comes at a slightly slower pace than Le Cercle.

I'm not familiar with Algiers other than the rumblings that I've read about it...looks like this one will be a definite blind-buy (and probably The Killing and Cul-de-Sac)

Army of Shadows for me is one of the best films of all time. It's also got a very good soundtrack as well.

Edit - also track down Criterion's Le Deuxieme souffle (DVD only); it's a seriously good crime thriller.

Algiers is amazing. It will be one of the smartest of blind-buys, I think. You won't be disappointed.
