A UHD Blu-ray release is a definite possibility.

I read this post so fast, I only caught the words "UHD Blu-ray" and "definite".

After I had calmed down and read it again, I noticed the word "possibility"...

It would definitely be interesting to see such a small label tackle UHD, considering how others have said it is very expensive to produce and replicate the discs. I shudder to think at what the price tag will be set at if it happens.

I just hope that potential UHD releases is either separate from the bluray release or that it doesn't cost more. This line is already insanely expensive.

So I decided to see the Italian release for myself to see if some of the recent posts claiming it is nothing like Synapse's comparisons have any merit.

Firstly, I did enjoy the Italian version. On it's own, it is very colorful and far better than previous blu-ray releases, which are way too contrasty and overblown, not to mention the colors being way off on previous releases. As I mentioned earlier in the thread however, watching a film without anything to compare it to is not a great way to be subjective about how it looks compared to other releases. Your eyes can adapt, and your eyes often compensate for tints and they get used to it. When watching the Italian disc, it looks great on it's own. But I decided to capture screenshots for myself using VLC and compare them directly to the comparisons provided by Synapse.

Remember, many in here have now claimed that the Italian disc looks nothing like Synapse's comparison, suggesting that Synapse's screenshots are inaccurate, either intentionally or by mistake:

You can be the judge of that here with my own screenshots. I have made no adjustments to the image - they are straight from VLC. Underneath each shot I will link the Synpase comparison so you can see how it compares to what they posted. My screenshots are likely not the identical frames, but they are most certainly close enough for the comparison. There are 5 comparisons and I put the whole thing in spoiler tags so don't click it unless you want to see a bunch of large screenshots.

I think it's obvious that Synapse's comparisons were absolutely accurate to the way the Italian disc looks, as they match my own screenshots exactly. So those claiming that the Italian disc looks "better" than what the screenshots suggest - no, they don't. The color I was seeing on my 55" LG UHD TV matches the screenshots I took in VLC. To further prove this I viewed my screenshots on my TV and they do indeed match how the disc looks.

So if people want to argue about whether Synapse's version will be right or wrong in terms of it's presentation, fine. But please stop trying to claim that the screenshots they provided are incorrect or inaccurate, because that is not the case.

Personally, I still feel the Synapse will look better. While The Italian disc did look very good on its own, it was clear to me in many shots that there was indeed a yellowish/greenish tint to faces and objects. Again, the screenshots I took prove it. I seriously doubt Argento intended the film to have that greenish look to it.

Note: Synapse's comparisons aren't loading correctly - here's their page where their comparisons can be loaded directly to compare to mine:

But when you think about it, it wouldn't be that bad of a issue to say add $20.00 to what will end up being the greatest release of this film to future proof it for UHD! Believe me If it happens to be a little more for the UHD it would be worth it instead of years from now wishing someone would release it in UHD. This is going to be Synapse's greatest release ever.

But that's my point. The screenshots don't look any more drab than the Italian disc itself (which imo does look drab when compared to Synapse's shots). If the screenshots look drab to you, that's because the Italian disc looks somewhat drab. As I said, when watching it on it's own, your eyes compensate for the tint. That doesn't mean it isn't there though.

mar3o's screenshots of the italian release appear to be gorgeous to me, look how lusciously vivid those primaries are. Sure, put them against the synapse and one looks super-pinky while the other looks super-greeny but hot damn, why can't both just look great in their own way?

Still, if Synapse release a UHD with 96/24 audio then I'll pounce on that faster than a fat kid on a Butterfinger.

I understand that those of you that have 4K TVs and the ability to play UHD blurays would find the idea of synapse doing a UHD release of Suspiria to be pretty exciting. Me personally I don't plan on upgrading my TV and player for some time. So I really don't need to pay extra for something I cant use. I also don't want to wait any extra time it may take for the preparation of a UHD release.

I have no issue with synapse releasing a UHD Suspiria, I just want it to be seperate from the regular bluray version.

I will probably wait for the UHD release if it will be BD only, and get the German/Italian release for now.

I don't have a 4K tv yet myself ... I don't plan on one until I can get one to match my the last ever flagship Panasonic Plasma model and every 4K I see in stores makes things look horribly blotchy and the magnolia sales guy that knows me for over 5 years flat out tells me what I would be happy with and that it still won't exceed my expectations.

However I plan on getting the next OPPO 4K Blu Ray player so I can at least play the 4K blus and get the better audio ATMOS etc that are exclusive to certain titles.

but yeah I want Suspiria on 4K for sure Might as well do the release right rather then the rights lapse and then people wish they had a 4K disc but will end up waiting for some other company to release it. aside from the fast Suspiria is one horror classic that is perfect for UHD. I just wish Dolby Vision was in place! UGH they are taking forever. I want them to kill the HDR! esp if Dolby Vision is more true to what the films should look like.

I don't think you would have a hard time selling it, especially since UHD's are region free.

I think it's funny how our eyes compensate. I agree that the disc did look very good and very colorful. I'm sensitive to greenish tints and teal so I did notice some shots throughout that appeared too murky or greenish to my eyes, but other shots looked great, and it certainly didn't lack color. I still prefer Synapse's screenshots honestly, but everyone has their own preferences. I think Synapse's version will look even more bold and colorful, while retaining more accurate skin tones. A film like Suspiria can't help but look colorful, but I think Synapse will reveal an even more colorful presentation (not over-saturated or over-contrasty, just more colorful). I think their remaster will look more pleasing. To me, greenish tints in general just look sickly.

I don't think people will be disappointed by the Italian disc. I just think that Synapse will be my preferred version based on their screencaps so far. None of us will know for sure until we have Synapse's version to compare to directly.

Does anyone else have problems with the Synapse comparisons showing up directly under my screenshots? Now that I'm reloading the page their screencaps aren't showing up underneath mine, but when I first posted my comparisons, their caps were visible directly under mine. Now I just see my screenshots, not Synapse's underneath. Weird.
