Yep, my worst fear was realized with this film. They double downed so hard on this aspect and it's helped turned me off this iteration of Spider-Man. Which is a shame since I think Tom Holland is perfect in the role and captures the spirit of the character. I just don't like anything he's surrounded with.

This is more a vehicle for the MCU than it is for Spider-Man aka Iron Man Jr. It's like they're overcompensating for finally having one of their top superheros in the MCU. Iron Man, SHIELD, and Happy are always up his ass or holding his hand, and this film ends up doing a variation on Peter's arc from the last one. It's time to take the kid gloves off this character already. Save that shit for the Avengers movies.

People are saying this had the best Spider-Man fights? It was a series of sequences where a CG Spider-Man battles swirls of CG shit.

The hype for Marissa Tomei as Aunt May was all for naught. They have done nothing with her and her relationship with Peter. There has not been a single substantial or heartfelt scene between them, no development, and now she's reduced to being the love interest of Iron Man's BFF who gets more screen time than her. You figure the writers would've done something poignant regarding the snap, like Aunt May having been alive and bereaved during Peter's death and making her more attached and protective of him when he comes back years later, but of course Aunt May was also snapped out of convenience. I guess that should be expected from a movie that uses the deaths from IW/EG for comedy in the opening scene.

I have no idea why Peter is so in love with this MJ. There was no spark between them in the last film and now this one starts with him already pining so hard for her when her personality and blasé demeanor is such a turn-off.

And as for Mysterio, he had the single most long-winded and inorganic exposition scene I can recall seeing. I was shocked that they didn't make some self-aware joke about it.

Mid-Credits scene
[Show spoiler] as cool as it was to see JK Simmons back as JJJ, he was the most restrained he's ever been in the role, and this iteration doesn't seem as entertaining as his previous one. The actor is back, but we're not getting campy portrayal that made his performance so popular in the first place.

It is going to have a limited release on July 12, 2019 so probably a wide release will happen at the end of July or the beginning of August. I live in one of the major cities so I am hoping we will get it as part of the limited release.

the ending makes me think
[Show spoiler]The Punisher
will be in the next one. Keanu Reeves can play him. lol

Unless Sony gives them Venom to use.

Would be nice to see the rise of the Kingpin in the next one too.

Funnily enough, there's a special event happening Thursday 8/15 where I work, I'm guaranteed to have that Tuesday off.

There's an interview out there with Feige about the fate of the characters used in the Netflix series. Bottom line seems to be that, barring any further negotiations, existing contracts forbid most if not all of those characters appearing in MCU films for a certain period after cancellation (I think four years?).

So that's probably a big NOPE for Punisher or Kingpin for the near future.

You jest but they are gonna have issues if Peter acts like a puppy dog that needs obedience training forever.

Or maybe they won’t. TLJ has taught us that people can’t handle less than ideal character development.

Having seen the movie late last night, it was fresh on my mind all day. I really liked
[Show spoiler]the Mysterio hallucination sequence. Very Dr. Strange meets Scarecrow from Arkham Asylum, and exactly how I pictured Mysterio working on the big screen (much as I love his actor/weird alien ripoff portrayals too). I really liked the mind games he played- how you never really knew what was and wasn't real. My favorite villains have always been the more cerebral ones.

My thoughts for 3-
[Show spoiler]it would be a great time to finally bring in Kraven the Hunter. Have someone (Kingpin?) hire him to take down Spidey, now that his identity is out there. I could see some big death- probably Happy, since naturally Peter's loved ones wouldn't be safe either.

Ya, but they're infatuated by their beauty and charming public personas. Peter Parker didn't exhibit any of that toward MJ in the previous film. It was obvious that MJ had a secret crush on him in the first one, and she hides it by being rude to him, but it wasn't reciprocated by him. There's no explicable reason why he's lusting after her when this film starts. What's the attraction? I get that she hides behind emotional armor but from Peter's perspective she's always miserable, cynical, obnoxious etc. And she always has this gloomy countenance.

In the original Raimi film it's clear from the start that she's always been Peter's childhood crush. She's the hottest girl in school and he's sexually attracted to her, he senses that she feels lonely despite being popular, he's sympathetic toward her abusive relationship with her father, she's nice to him etc. Some of that is superficial but at least I get why he lusts after her in the first place, unlike here.
