In the early days of working with film the fan-made restorations were using the homebrew telecine machines you describe with a DSLR and a mechanism to pull the film in front of the lens at a regular interval synced with the camera's shutter release. Each frame was captured as a RAW still and then compiled into a video file in software. As the 35mm projects gained visibility the major players have migrated to backchannel conversations and secured forums to discuss means and methods (for good reason), but reading between the lines indicates that some of them have access to professional telecine equipment on an infrequent basis. I suspect someone may have even raised the cash to buy a Blackmagic Cintel.

I've seen mention from people involved with the fan-made Star Wars 4k scan indicating that it resolves around 2k in image detail, and a full 4k in grain. I've seen some stills from it and it looks pretty great, but pales in comparison to what could be (was?) achieved by a 4k scan of OCN.

And, usually, it won't even be close.
What you are saying doesn't really matter in the end because those technicalities are pointless. Cinema is an experience, not something where you go to measure pixels or whatnot. It is the qualitative experience of seeing the images that matter to the viewer than the quantitative attributes of the presentation. In terms of the subjective visual experience, film prints look as good as a UHD to me. Actually, I'd say it looks more soothing.

Ok. You made a simple statement about a technical matter and your statement was factually inaccurate. I responded to clarify. It doesn't really matter to me whether or not my response matters to you.

Might have already been asked do forgive me if it has but do the included digital copies redeem 4K versions or just HD?

What you're experiencing at home is dependent upon your display and your audio components. These convos can only be meaningful if members have some basic info.

On that note, it would be TERRIFIC if folks would leverage the 'signature' feature to list home theater components.

Hold on, I wasn't saying your response doesn't matter to me. I was saying that your points about whether digital has more spacial resolution or whether it has more pixels on a DCP versus a film print, doesn't matter (the technical details don't) because ultimately, people are experiencing the quality of the projected image. In terms of image depth, contrast, details in highlights, shadows and colour richness, colour separation, a film print looks far more engaging than a DCP of that same film. At least to me. In terms of image creation, what matters is framing, colours, contrast, etc. That is what makes the image, not the resolution. You can shoot in 1080p and still make an image feel cinematic, while you can shoot in 8K and still make it look like regular video. The image creation is the most important, not pixels.

Yep, I recall a study validating this.

I wasn't taking offense. I'm saying that I only responded because you said something factually inaccurate and I wanted to point out the correct "technical aspect" for the record. I've done that. If my info is helpful to you, that's great, but if it isn't, that's fine, too.

These cardboard sleeves are insanity!! Who thought these were a good idea?
I had to prise the sleeves open with my middle finger and thumb and grasp the middle ring to ensure I didn't touch the disc but I got a fingerprint on JP1.

I was in the store and my daughter saw something that had an add for the new movie, which prompted us to go back to the movie section and buy the set of all the old ones. I can't comment on 4k quality since I'm not on a 4k tv, but we had a blast watching the first two movies over the weekend.

I'm with Jim though, the book packaging is stupid, a couple of the discs already have small scratches from the packaging. Nothing I can't buff out so I won't bother exchanging them, but I might keep an eye out for a multi disc case to put them in and just print out a custom cover or something.

I like the look of the book packaging, but it does drive me bat-crazy when taking disks out. May have to buy some cases.

Just watched Jurassic Pork. It looks better than the bd but not by much. It still has (slight) sharpening that bothers me but it's tighter than the bd. I don't notice dnr as much as sharpening.

The Lost World is a real beauty. Can't ask for much better than this presentation. Not only is the picture stellar but the sound....the opening scene with the waves? Stunning.
