switch 89 with returns and I have the same ranking, if I could not rank rises and ignore it that'd be preferred.

I think I should set a war clock up for any time here on out Batman chat comes up on this thread, because hoh boy it's getting a little wearisome.

Anyway, having seen it twice I will maintain that Miami Vice is one of Michael Mann's best films (in to my mind a filmography with no below average fare), leaning on top three.

I'm starting to think all the anti-Nolan/anti-Batman talk isn't an opinion, it's a cry for help. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, of course, but the people who bring this topic up are obsessed with hating Nolan and his Batman films. They're just movies, people. Let it go.

As fotr Miami Vice: the movie is fine as long as Farrell and Gong Li aren't onscreen.

Our film teacher in high school had such high hopes for this film and took us on a field trip to see it. I think De Laurentis spent a near record amount on the film at the time. It was an embarrassing ride home. I think Jack Black took inspiration from Charles Grodin, though. One of the other bad effects I'll never forget is the superimposition on the side of cliff that wobbled. But Dwan looked nice. Overall, it wasn't much of an improvement on the original.

3-D sucks. It does nothing to enhance the storyline of a film. It's nothing more than a money-grabbing, stupid gimmick.

3D doesn't make a bad movie good, or a good movie better. The technology has improved but it isn't necessary.

3D is the best thing to have happened to (home) cinema since surround sound.

I have to disagree there, at least in several cases. Nothing makes a bad movie good except drugs.

Just in case I didn't already mention this, Gravity was a terrible movie.

Not sure if I've said this before but I feel like Eastwood's best work in recent years was American Sniper. A blunt, brutal and precise war thriller that just presented violence as cold and ugly (save for that dumb kill towards the end with the rival sniper) and handled its topics of PTSD with care. Of course, I just like his meat and potatoes way of shooting.

American Sniper is an outstanding film. After Platoon it's the best war film ever made. Doesn't get the props it deserves IMO.

Miami Vice is great even if the casting isn't, its just a treat to stare at.

Completely disagree. Wish JAWS, 2001, BLADE RUNNER and ROAD WARRIOR (and a few more) got the post 3D conversion.

3D might not "improve" a movie, but I'll take it ANY day over 4K, which is a slight improvement over what blu-ray already offered (especially on a 65" to 75" HDTV screen). 3D is a completely new experience, and while I never cared for it in theaters (seemed a bit too dark and the effect never registered too well) it works EXTREMELY well in the home theater. A lot brighter, colorful and more effective on my 65" tv.

Hell, movies like IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE in 3D was eye opening, in that I never knew the creature had an extended arm or that it's eye was on a stalk. BLADE RUNNER would be fantastic in 3D (especially scenes at the end, where Deckard is climbing up the Bradbury building. Apparently there are 3 levels of roads criss-crossing below him, which you never really notice due to the 2D aspect of the film).

But complain all you want. I'd rather have a completely new viewing experience bringing some extra life to a film (whether it "needs" it or not) than "oh.. there's slightly more detail than before... wooo".

Generally I agree.

But i’ll never forget seeing Avatar in 3-D in theater.

...it was awesome.

3D has single handedly ruined the theater experience in Ontario.

Up yours Cineplex.

I would go so far as to say that's true of every Michael Mann film.

I like Colin Farrell but he seems utterly miscast here: he has no chemistry with either Jamie Foxx or Gong Li (though in all fairness and despite the fact that Li photographs like a goddess, her character is so rigid and emotionally inpenetrable I frankly can't imagine who could possibly have chemistry with her) and he often looks pained and lost beyond the requirements of the role. Mann's sense for loner heroes (and anti-heroes) combined with an aura of doomed romanticism continues to result in some hauntingly moody and visually gorgeous films, however; whatever their flaws they remain compelling.
