Due to the tremendous amount of quality tv and movies these days + ease of access, people's expectations have shot through the roof. So, movies that may not be masterpieces or even 9/10 get unnecessarily regarded as bottom feeding garbage.
People forget that truly terrible movies are films like Elektra or that god-awful Catwoman starring Halle Berry. Therefore, perfectly watchable and fun stuff like Mortal Engines, Dead Men Tell No Tales, Lone Ranger, etc are all criticized far more harshly than they actually deserve. |

I remember deciding there was no way in hell I would ever see BLUES BROTHERS when I heard how much it cost -- same for LEGAL EAGLES -- because I thought it was absurd to let costs spiral like that for a comedy. I realize this is an extreme minority opinion, but I have never liked GHOSTBUSTERS (the best joke I know associated with the film isn't even in it, but in the caption to a review of it in STARLOG magazine, words to the effect that Sigourney Weaver has become possessed and the GB must repossess her), and honestly wonder whether not throwing a huge chunk at the VFX budget would have resulted in a leaner and hopefully funnier movie. I think a lot of this thinking came out of seeing 1941 (which was the only movie I saw in December 1979 that I liked at the time), which was such a case of overkill that I wasn't even sure why I was laughing sometimes. I was a teenager making Super-8 and 16mm stuff for no money at all, doing all the tricks in-camera, and that frugal attitude -- not a no-frills one, but sensible -- really only looked for exemptions on the budgetary excesses when there was something special happening, like APOCALYPSE NOW or 2001. I remember finally seeing the DiLaurentis KING KONG on a very late double bill with LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR, and I couldn't believe that they shot the Baker Kong with depth of field and camera angles that did nothing to hide the fact this was a normal sized guy walking around -- it made me think that this is what it would have looked like if Kong had come to spy on the girls in the water tank at PETTICOAT JUNCTION -- except that shot of the train going by in JUNCTION featuring a miniature train looked a ton more convincing than anything in that movie. Oscars for KONG and LOGAN'S RUN fx really made me wonder if anybody in the business knew what a convincing illusion even was (though in retrospect, I gotta say that a lot of Yuricich's paintings in LOGAN are superb, though undercut by rotten matte work and bad use of snorkel lenses and a lot of other goofs.) |

But TRUE LIES only ever worked for me with the dream of killing Paxton, and some of the VFX model work. Nothing of Cameron's works for me post-T2, though to be fair, I have only seen a sliver of TITANIC, part of the climax. I found myself laughing very hard, to the point that my wife got 'infected' with the gigggles -- and it was not a comedy scene -- so there's no way I can go back and try to watch the thing now ... it is too much like trying to watch LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST right after seeing 'blessed are the cheesemakers' from LIFE OF BRIAN.) |

For one thing, I liked David Caruso's work even before MAD DOG AND GLORY or NYPD BLUE.
Also liked the musical conceit, because I kind of live a lot of aspects of my life to pieces of music (though my choices are nearly always filmscore instrumentals, not pop songs ... Jerry Goldsmith really had provided the underscore for my whole life, especially if you take into account the stuff of his that Horner appropriated and repurposed.) I remember thinking HUDSON HAWK squandered Coburn in a big way and thinking that McDowell might not even be a professional actress, but later realized that was probably a directorial fault. Also, if I had suffered as bad a reaction to HAWK as most people, I would have began boycotting Willis and missed out on seeing THE LAST BOY SCOUT, which despite a lot ofidiocies, is one of my favorite action/character films. The bit where he is looking at himself in the mirror telling himself he is going to lose and nobody likes him and to smile you **** really bought that movie a lot of leeway going forward for me. |

Dumb and Dumber 2 is quite funny. Nowhere near the original but still a fun time.

Elektra is one of the best Marvel superhero movies and better than 98% of today's Marvel movies.

Batman nipples, bat credit card and bat ice skating boots are still not as stupid as the ferry boat scene in The Dark Knight or the entire The Dark Knight Rises.
Batman (1989) > Batman Returns > Batman The Movie > Batman Forever > Batman Begins > Batman and Robin > The Dark Knight > The Dark Knight Rises |
