III is the easier of the remaining original films to bring to 4K, as the others will have fans lamenting about which version was/wasn't released.

I saw it at my local back when it came out (as a triple bill) and the audience laughed like drains throughout. OK, Robert Vaughn was the best Lex Luthor they never had, but it was weird to hear the whole audience chuckling at Superman when they were in awe of him not so long before.

True, but they'd have to be barmy to just release this on its own! I'll happily take the theatricals of II and IV thankyouplease, maybe there'll be a Donner Cut redux to bring it into the 4K space (like with Star Trek TMP DE) but have Warners ever done an official recut of IV? If not then I can't see them doing it now, so that's straightforward enough.

I didn't expect Warner to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of THIS movie......

LOL

But it's also the 45th Anniversary of the first one, so a boxset might be possible!!

There was a persistent rumour that decent quality footage of the missing bits from IV had been found, and the film was to be reconstructed for HBO Max, but it was largely debunked.

I'd be happy if they used some of the CGI'd footage on YouTube. The rebuilding of the Great Wall of China is exactly how I thought it could be redone!

Yup! But in an ideal world...

I:
- Theatrical and Special Editions on 4K.
- TV cut which can remain on BD if need be.

II:
- Theatrical cut on 4K.
- Donner Cut can remain on BD if need be.

III:
- Theatrical cut on 4K.
- Theatrical cut with TV opening credits on 4K.
- Either the full TV version on BD or all of the non-theatrical material as deleted scenes.

IV:
- Theatrical cut on 4K.
- All of the deleted scenes. WB will never make a new cut.

Returns:
- Theatrical cut on 4K.

I do a lot of tearing down of people’s “ideal worlds” on here, if only because I’m an arch-pessimist, but that lineup ain’t so far-fetched. Seems verr reasonable, even. And yes, I’d like to have the STM SE on 4K too.

The international release of the film and the US TV broadcast had two extra scenes: Nuclear Man creates a tornado and almost sets off a missile in Russia. Both of these scenes were shown in shoddy quality on the DVD and Blu-ray in the bonus section, but both were finished and should have been included in the HD master.

This is a pleasant surprise. Though a bit surprising if it’s just III as a standalone. One would hope every scrap of footage for all four would eventually be included with each film. George Feltenstein has now said on a few podcasts that he’s been looking for anything else surviving from IV and that they have some vaulted deleted materials.

II would need some work to get the Donner cut up to scratch for even a passable release given the limited new effects. It’d be nice to also get the theatrical Megasound mix too even though that may have just been a “turn up the bass” experience.

I’ve gone through quite the emotional journey with the Donner Cut of part II, I think at this point I would just be happy with the theatrical cut of II, I don’t think fans will ever be happy or agree on what a revised version of II should look like, but I’ve made peace with that fact now.

Oh, nice. Presumably WB will be releasing all the sequels. Hopefully they'll do a box set as they did with the Burton/Schumacher Batflicks.

I've preached and preached that the Donner Cut of II would never get a 4K remaster, but as others have pointed out, I guess Star Trek: TMP suggests that it's possible.

However, I still think it's extremely unlikely. The DE of Star Trek: TMP only existed in standard def before, and I think that if there had been an existing HD master of that cut, Paramount might not have bothered (it took them nearly 20 years to be convinced as it is).

Meanwhile WB is currently on the warpath, axing anything that might lose even the slightest amount of money, including brand-new DC projects. So I just don't see it happening, at least not anytime soon.

As for an all-new "hybrid" cut, forget that for sure. As we've seen on this board alone, everyone has their own idea about what it should include and exclude, so there really wouldn't be much point.

No one's said that. Someone just found an Amazon listing for III as a 4K. It could mean something, it could mean nothing. But if III is getting a 4K, you can be damn sure that II (Theatrical) will, as well as probably IV...and I would assume probably a Box Set option for the U.S., at least.

As has been stated numerous times above and by Feltenstein over the past couple of years, Warners has located the workprint of IV but it lacks complete VFX and sound. I could see them just dumping it on the IV 4K disc as a Bonus Feature. They apparently haven't located a preserved version of the TV Cut of II, yet, but they could be just waiting to make a splash announcement all together. I hope we'll know more soon...

Coincidentally, I just finished revisiting all of the films and about 80% of the supps via the Anthology box set.

Just an a la carte BD of that Donner II disc with the lossless would be nice (the 2006 disc is lossy).

Don't need to revisit III or IV. Ever.
