It was intended to be a direct reference to Odo's species. Cardassians and Ferengi have also been shown in this season, as background aliens. The current Fed President is half-Bajoran, so we're definitely going to get more references and call-backs to DS9 and maybe even meet a Jem-Hadar or see what The Burn did to The Dominion.

The only reason the Founders looked like they did on STDS 9 was for Odo’s benefit. Ronald D. Moore said that Odo modelled his look after Dr. Mora and the Founders then modeled their look after Odo as a way of reaching out to their long lost Changeling, and later as a dig and reminder to him of his own limitations. So there’s really no apparent in-universe reason for the Changeling to look like she(?) did in the episode. It was most likely presented like that purely for audience recognition, maybe just as a side-note to the audience that Changelings are still around at this time.

So I just watched episode 8 and this season is trying my patience. This DMA plot should have wrapped up in 2 episodes, it’s so booooring. And please I hope they get rid of Book, he is in the middle of everything and adds nothing. Is Star Fleet like 10 people now? I know its tough filming in a pandemic but I think they were allowed more than 5 people in a scene together?

Last nights episode kept me on the edge of my seat; really had “Arrival” vibes.

As someone who works in Tv, last year was a real wild west from show to show, and this one shoots in Canada, which had some pretty strict covid protocols.

I'm sure that was the general idea. But dear lord it just dragged on forever. It felt like hours of them standing around in the hangar talking about it while almost nothing happened or moved the plot forward. & then, hey, let's go have a chat about Saru's feelings. Because it's not like were in a time crunch or anything is it? What's that? only 12 hours until Earth is destroyed? Ah well...

Burnham started off badly in season 1, but has become one of the worst characters in Trek history. In previous seasons there were lots of complaints about her acting & 'cry-face Burnham', but this season's 'smug-smile-face Burnham' is even more irritating. I absolutely hate the way she always has the answer for whatever problem they encounter.

& since she became Captain of the Disco, she's constantly calling other people out for being too emotional or not doing the right thing for the good of the many when she spent three seasons doing whatever she wanted with little or no apparent reprimands.

Book started off as a cool character, but now he just seems to end every scene with, "Oh, & how is Michael doing, is she OK?". Kinda hoping he sacrifices himself to stop his ill-thought-out plan with Dr Nutbag.

At this point I'm only really watching it for the spaceships & action scenes. I kinda hate all the characters.

I'm not sure there are greater gluttons for punishment than Star Trek fans and Star Wars fans.

To me, this last episode felt closer to the essence of Star Trek than any Trek has in quite a while. Making the effort to find a common means of connection and striving to communicate instead of relying on the pew pew boomy boom was really well done, IMO.

It was odd that they took so long to realize that Reno was missing, though, I suppose she's been gone for much of the season, so...yeah.

The AI waiting until now to disclose the blind spot was weird, too, but, overall, a very strong effort.

I loved them figuring out how to use maths as a language to communicate. An exciting episode overall, much better than last week's. Reno continues to rock.

Math. It’s not a school of fish, it’s a subject taught at school.

Maths. Short for mathematics, plural. Why Americans insist on studying just a single mathematic I’ve no idea.

On a separate note, it would be cool if they guest starred Odo in a future episode...I think that species lives for a long time but I haven't seen DS9 since it aired...I tried the dvd set but couldn't watch it on the UHD as it looked like crap. Discovery has been pretty great though.

Must be an across the pond thing. I just thought it was more twitter speak rearin’ it’s ugly head.

We definitely say mathematics, just not maths. I can barely bring myself to think it.

Rene Auberjonois passed away a few years ago sadly so we won’t be seeing Odo again.

Oh no, he is my favorite character on DS9, I really enjoyed his and Quark's interactions... I also love both versions of Dax, it's a toss up as to which I prefer.
As for Discovery, so far my favorite has been Gabriel Lorca season 1,
Captain Pike season 2, Saru season 3 (a close second for seasons 1&2 as well) probably my favorite Alien design in all of Trek. Favorite guest star: Rainn.
Still undecided for season 4, I'm going with love for the new costumes for now.
Least favorite characters: Paul & Sylvia.
