All I think is if FOX can release something that will make money before Disney take control of the lot, they will do it. Even if it's just Star Wars by itself. I can't see it lying idle for another seven years.

Fox take their cues from Lucasfilm, so unless they only do the first film I can't see it happening...

Disney don't care. In 7 years if they make sure the theatrical cut goes OOP, they can make a killing. They'd rather wait and create a larger demand than satisfy the fans, as evidenced by their use of the "Disney Vault"...

Do Fox still have them?

I'm surprised they've never released the theatrical versions. Fox must know the large majority of the fan base want the originals over the later edits, and even if they didn't they must know they would want them as well. Most fans would buy both, but I'm still waiting for the PROPER versions. Annoyingly I only have Empire on DVD (2-disc with both cuts) and none of the others. I have Jedi on VHS but my VCR won't work with the new telly.

I did notice they are releasing Star Wars trilogies on DVD again. Anyone know if they're just the Lucas re-edits, the original theatrical cuts, or both? Can't seem to find out what they are.

Not to seem arsey, mate. But I am not sure where you are coming from. People go on about being 'purists' and wanting to watch films the way they are intended to be seen (hence why we're all big fans of blu ray, I suspect), but people still don't want to watch Star Wars the way it's creator wishes them to be seen.

It's not like the studio itself fiddled around and altered the films, it's Lucas' intention that it be seen that way, for better or worse.

We just want to see them the way the creator made them the first time around. I have nothing against the changes if we're presented with alternative versions. I think all the versions are equally as valid and we should have the opportunity to see them on Blu-ray.

I think each film deserves a Blade Runner style collector's edition with all the bells and whistles. I'd love to see all the deleted scenes restored to a high standard and documentaries on the restoration et cetra.

Think thats a really good point. I’ve got the unaltered versions from the DVD editions that were released, if I want to watch them and have done (these were the ones I grew up with)

But yeah, if this is how Lucas wants them and its now down to better tech and options then 35 years ago, why not.

If Wes Craven went back to Nightmare on Elm st to add a scene or add better effects to make his movie better why not? Didn’t Ridley Scott do this for Alien/Aliens and Blade Runner.

I guess the only thing is, it would be nice to have the option. But I’m not going to not allow myself to watch great iconic favourites in HD just because of a couple of scenes or effects.

On balance, it would seem to me to be more profitable to release the various versions of the Saga, from a financial standpoint, it makes business sense. The returns on investing in such a restoration would surely pay off. Nevertheless, I remain content with the current Blu-ray release at this present moment in time.

Fox did the recut of Alien and Scott requested a few more changes and approved it.

Aliens was recut by director James Cameron.

Blade Runner was altered by Ridley Scott.

BUT the key difference is that the original cuts of Alien and Aliens were included on the same disc, and almost every version of Blade Runner (including a workprint) was made available in a collector's edition for those that wanted. With Star Wars the public hasn't been given the choice, only the "Special Edition" is available...

Also, at no point have Fox or Warner tried to pretend that the re-edits are the original version. The Final Cut of Blade Runner is always marked as such, even when broadcast on TV, and the Alien series had the original versions on the same disc.

With Blade Runner Ridley Scott even recorded a nice intro explaining that he'd made changes and why he'd made them and that The Final Cut was the version he was happiest with.

I wouldn't say that's cheap considering the non supplements of the previous trilogy, not that i'm that bothered about extra features, but I don't think it should be more expensive than, say, The Hitchcock Collection. £30 would be considered very reasonable to for the saga. But then, i'd probably not even buy it simply because it includes 3 films I don't like.

That's fair enough, I guess. I do agree that different versions should be presented. I guess my issue is with people that go as far as to boycott the blu ray because of the changes in the revised editions. That's just going too far.

Did they have a Star Wars display? A few stores have got one this week. The Return of the Jedi book and the new DVD sets are out this week.

I'd say I'm boycotting them for now...

I can't remember seeing a book, or a big display, but I did see the new DVD editions both had slips.

Yes, both are and I'd assume the forthcoming individual trilogies will be too.

If you've never seen them before I'd either go 456 then 123 or 123456. Both are fine but the chronological order will spoil The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi's spoilers. If you know them it won't matter. I always go 456123.

Or have you ever heard of folk doing 451236!?
It's basically story of Luke up until the big spoiler of 5 then 123 as flashbacks then back to 6 as the finale.
Pretty crazy
