It had a budget of 235 million and made just over 400 million, in what world is that not a flop?
If it had been a DC film or something from Warner, you would have been mocking it and giving it 1 star before you saw it.

Is the point that they are not watering the seeds, or the specific movies are not continuing? What if those characters appear elsewhere? Like they do if a solo comic is canceled?

First off, Eternals 2 is currently still not dead. It's not in production, but hasn't been killed outright. Feige still wants to do it, but there's a lot going on right now leading up to Secret Wars.

Second, it didn't "flop". We all knew that post-Endgame, a lot was going to change, and it did. The whole MCU had to almost start new, and again, we know that was going to happen. Maybe watch it again without expecting Iron Man or Steve Rogers to save the day and look at the movie as its own thing.

Wakanda Forever got good vibes. Thor: Love and Thunder was hilarious, I really liked it. 10 Rings bored me. I think it's been hit or miss, and I really want BNW to kick ass.

And if you add up the four MCU titles from 2021, overall the franchise was profitable for that year.

Unlike NTTD, which lost money theatrically because it had cost so much.

2021 was almost a move theater wasteland. My goodness the money lost that year is crazy.

And we're still not back to pre-pandemic levels when looking at the total yearly box-office.

If we're lucky, maybe by 2025 or 2026 we might once again reach the same levels we had in 2019.

You wonder if we'll ever get back to pre-pandemic levels of theater trips though. I think people learned to do without and/or upgraded their home setups. Its possible.

I will probably go see this Superman movie. Nice way to blow an afternoon.

No. That boom period in 2016-2019 is over. It was over when theaters closed in 2020.

Never say never, but they'd have to come out with a heapin' pile of terrific movies that catered or appealed to very large audiences. Not that easy. Even with Star Wars or MCU content, you arent guaranteed your required billion anymore.

The box office being depressed is purely down to the current situation with probably peoples bills going through the roof and people finding movies the easiest thing to cut down on. They already have subscriptions to probably several services that the movies will come to a few months later to and they save whatever the price of a ticket is and concessions.

I think only movies with really good word of mouth will probably be the main driver to get people to go and make those box office numbers as big as they are.

The pandemic just hit fast forward on a trend that was already occurring. The industry had attendance issues (in the US) well prior to COVID-19.

Whether or not this is like the 1930s or 1960s when the future of theaters seemed unclear but eventually rebounded remains to be seen, though I don't see things going in theaters' favor this time around with all the competition for one's time that exists, entertainment or otherwise.

I went to see a 30th anniversary screening of The Crow in May, but otherwise I don't think I've been to a theater in about 3 years.
