![]() The Signalman (1976) dir. Lawrence Gordon Clark The Good: Atmospheric and chilling. Doesn't resort to cheap scares. Fine performances by Denholm Elliott and Bernard Lloyd (it's just two guys talking, but man, do they sell it well). Very ominous. Effective tension-building. Great use of musical score. Nice photography. The ghost. "Hello, below there..." |

Glad you liked it; definitely interested in seeing it, if only for how strange and compelling it looks.

![]() Re watched Life of Pi... The framing story still bothers me: it's heavy handed, obvious and really brings the narrative down. However, the middle stretch is still incredible and more than warranted Ang Lee's win on Sunday Night. |

The story didn't seem that interesting from the trailers. I'm stoked to see this though. And Mia looks different.

![]() [Show spoiler] I just watch their shows on Blu-ray though. I have no other use for HBO, and I have no problem owning their shows that I buy, although I'm in the minority about Boardwalk Empire's second season and need an improved third season to keep that one. |

Bunch of short reviews:
The Impossible: 3.5 (out of 4) Very well-directed with great effects, making you feel like you were there for the tsunami. Naomi Watts very well could've won best actress; many critics stated that they thought she did the best job, but because she was out of the film for large stretches of time they had to detract some points. Macgregor could've been nominated for supporting actor, and in a year not as stacked probably would have. A great film, but very difficult to watch. __________________________________________________ ____ Seven Psychopaths: 3 (out of 4) Entertaining and as crazy as its title, but not as emotionally involving as In Bruges. Still worth watching. _________________________________________________ Ted: 2.5 (out of 4) Conceptually funny, but the film itself wasn't very funny. __________________________________________________ _____ Silver Linings Playbook: 3.5 (out of 4) Very entertaining, well-written, and acted. I was shocked to find that Cooper could actually act and his nomination was well-deserved. De Niro also did a good job, but the awards push for him was surprising because he certainly didn't deserve to win an Oscar for his role. Weaver had no business being nominated. Lawrence was great and a deserving Oscar winner, even if I felt she overacted at times. O'Russell's best directing nomination over Affleck, Bigelow, and even Bayona (for the Impossible) is ridiculous. __________________________________________________ ___ The Imposter: 3 (out of 4) One of the most talked about documentaries last year, which was truly fascinating and put together like a thriller. Worth watching. __________________________________________________ _____ Lawless: 2.5 (out of 4) A lot of good people were in this, such as Chastain and Hardy. It's based on a true story. However, I thought its pacing was poor and its story wasn't very involving becase not a single character was likeable or sympathetic. __________________________________________________ ____- Lincoln: 3.5 (out of 4) Very good film, even if not an all-time great like a lot of people were expecting. Day-Lewis, obviously, completely immersed himself in the role and was fantastic. Tommy Lee Jones should've won the Oscar, as he stole every scene, and probably would have if he had an ounce of likeability in real life. I thought the script was also great and very eloquent. __________________________________________________ ___ Life of Pi: 3.5 (out of 4) Entertaining and just a technical marvel. Ang Lee was a deserving best director winner. The visuals were extraordinary and I found the story involving. __________________________________________________ ______ Insomnia (original) 2.5 (out of 4) Skaarsgard was pretty good in this original version from the late 90s. I found the rest of the film to be ho-hum, however, and not particularly interesting. __________________________________________________ _____- Les Miserables 3 (out of 4) A great technical achievement with varying degrees of quality in the singing and acting. Crowe was poor, as many opined. It was a good film but I just can't do films that are sung from beginning to end. __________________________________________________ _____ Flight: 3.5 (out of 4) Washington was fantastic, one of his best performances. The crash was very well-done and harrowing. I really enjoyed the film. __________________________________________________ ________ Frankenweenie: 3 (out of 4) I'm not a Tim Burton fan but he did well here. The thought the scenery was great and he did an excellent job with shadows. I also thought the score was effective. __________________________________________________ _______ Side Effects: 3.5 (out of 4) One of the best pure thrillers I've seen in awhile. I think the reviews are very accurate for this film, saying if Hithcock was alive this could be the type of film he'd make. I think Ebert's 3.5 review was interesting, as its entire first paragraph mentioned how effective the music was. I've never seen Ebert devote an entire paragraph to a film's score, but it was warranted here--the score was excellent and almost like another character. If the film didn't come out so early in the year, it could be Oscar nomination number 12 for Newman. I also thought the directing and cinematography were excellent. Soderbergh is a master of creating mood and did so better here than probably any of his other films. Rooney Mara did a great job and although I wasn't sold on her in Dragon Tattoo, this film showed me that she has a very bright career going forward. Jude Law was great, as usual. Overall, this film was excellent and if it's Soderbergh's last film, he picked a hell of a one to go out on. |

Blu-ray Champion

![]() ![]() Director: James Watkins Main Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Janet McTeer, Ciaran Hinds, Sophie Stuckey, Roger Allam Rating: 3 out of 5 Life hasn't been kind to Arthur Kipps (Radcliffe). Having lost his wife he is grief stricken and barely managing to hang on to his job at a London law office. He loves his only son dearly but is forced to leave him behind when he is assigned to wrap up the affairs of a recently deceased widow at a faraway country mansion. Upon arriving at the local village he is shunned as an outsider who is apt to bring tragedy to them all. For some reason there's a plethora of horror movies being released out of season so I decided to join the fun and take one in. In a world full of gory slasher flicks a Victorian ghost story seems almost trite. But I thought it was a welcome break from the norm. Of course the big question on everyone's minds when this was released was whether Radcliffe could shed his association with Harry Potter. I thought he did a great job and didn't once think of him in that role. As for the story I thought it was decent although upon reflection nothing extraordinary. There were a couple times however that I actually got chills down my back - which with the exception of two other films never happens. So in that respect as a horror flick it succeeded. I just wish they had fleshed out the story more. |
