That's from his Ouch show. In my mind that's the best one. After this he mostly just repeats himself. But i think that he recently added a few new jokes.

It seems like that eventually happens to all comedians after a while.

Strange, perhaps. But believe me, he Knows EXACTLY what he's doing. That's just his own unique style. In the Drum World, he's always been one of the main influences for many 70's/80's & beyond, Drummers.

I've got that BD. I think it's great, but Ginger Baker looks like the Crypt Keeper!

That's called improvising! There's an old saying: Mess something up once, and it's just a mistake, mess something up twice, and it's jazz!
Yea, you can really HEAR the Openness of his Kick Drums in that clip. Prob used a felt strip, if that, & nothing else.
(Nice quote at the end there Joe)

Thanks Tommy, I'm doing fine. Thanks for the link. I particularly like this: "Keep the subwoofer away from walls. The quality of the bass will increase and your neighbors will thank you." I knew that it helps the in room sound by keeping them away from walls, but I didn't realize that it would significantly reduce the amount of sound leaking outside. I will probably try to move them a few more inches away from the walls.

Yes the further you keep your speakers and the main listening position away from the walls and other things reflecting the better it all will sound. Just try not too place the main listening area completely in the middle of the room (front too back) be cause there is were you usually have the biggest bass nulls.

The neighbors ears i've given up on saving a long time ago.

I'm about 9 feet from the front wall and about 3.5 feet from the back wall. I just didn't realize that keeping the subs away from the walls would make it quiter outside of the house, but I guess that makes sense. Further from the walls means less transfer through the walls.

The main reason I want less sound going to the neighbors, is so I can turn it up that much more for my own enjoyment. I'm actually quite surprised at how well my crappy looking homemade window-plug reduces the outside sound. That window faces directly towards the only close neighbor that I have, and before I put in the plug, I could hear it pretty clearly from their porch. They complained a few times about the sound late at night. Since I put in the plug, I can stand right outside of my window, with the volume up fairly loud, and barely hear it. They haven't complained at all since I installed it, but I still like to do everything that I can to reduce the outside sound level as much as possible, mainly for my own peace of mind, so I can really crank it without any worries about pissing them off in the back of my mind.

I'd like to receive an oral exam from her (wink, wink, nudge, nudge, know what I mean?)

I was really looking forward to watching a few movies tonight, but as usual, there's a freakin' big-ass crazy thunderstorm rolling through here. It seems like ever since I got my projector and set up my HT room, the t-storms have increased by about 75%. Maybe they will pass through soon.

One thing I forgot to do was to adjust the sub distance in the receiver after moving them. I adjusted it the other day while listening to some bass heavy music, and found out that they sounded better set three inches further than what my tape measure said. I'll definitely do that when I fire it up next time.

Thats real cool. Im not very knowledgeable about soundproofing but im sure that information is just one google search away. Maybe you could get some of that proofing material sometime if you want a cleaner and more effective solution. Remember that soundproofing is what you need for keeping sound from getting out not sound absorption.

Maybe if you also make some sort of subwoofer riser it will help a little bit to. Bass have a tendency too accumulate in the corners. So maybe try and keep your subs away from your corners. This will also help with making the lower sound frequencies sounds less exaggerated/bloated.

I did do some research before making my window plug. One thing that I learned was that a combination of different types and densities of materials insulate against sound much better than just using one kind of material. I have a very thick black comforter filled with polyfill doubled over and nailed along the inside of the window frame. From the outside, it looks just like black curtains. Over that, I have a thick foam mattress topper. I was very careful to make sure that the comforter and the foam mattress topper completely covered the entire window, and even go slightly passed the window, and are tucked tightly into the frame. Over that, I have 3/4" plywood nailed onto the inside facing of the window frame, extending passed the entire window. Finally, I have black bed sheets covering the ceiling and walls of the entire room.

It's probably not the most technically efficient or aesthetically pleasing way to build a window plug, but it seems to do the job very well, and from inside the room, you cant even tell that there's a window there, because of the black cloth covering everything in the room.

One thing I also noticed was that before I added the black sheets to the room, I could clap, and hear the slap-back echo/reverberation of the room pretty clearly. Now when I clap, there's pretty much no after-sound at all. Don't think that I'm delusional enough to believe that what I've done in there will replace, or even compete with professional sound treatments, but it has definitely helped quite a bit.

As far as my subs, I have them about a foot away from the walls behind them, and about two feet away from the back wall of the room, but they are also directly in front of the three feet deep closets in the back of the room, so if you include the closets, they are about five feet away from the back of the room. I have tried them both up front between my front speakers, one in the front one in the back at opposing corners, midpoint of the room firing inward towards each other, in the back corners firing forward the length of the room, and where I have them now. Where they are now seems to sound the best and also gives me a bit of a simulated buttkicker kind of feel from the couch. I really wish I had a bigger room to work with.

I have been thinking about building some sub risers, and also adding some polyfill to the inside of the sub cabinets. I will hopefully eventually do both.

Damn, I just went on a typing spree!

I have that album too! Did you know that Sausage was the original lineup of Primus reuniting(with Jay Lane-drums & Todd Huth-guitar), but for legal reasons they couldn't use the name Primus. Jay Lane is now the drummer for Primus.

I have every album by Primus, and if I'm not mistaken every album by Les Claypool without Primus. That's my kind of music!

You sure are thorough Joe. Great job on the diy.

If i may come with a few thoughts. Using different materials can make the likelihood of the sound bouncing back larger than with one type only. Hehe but ofcause it's alright as it still blocks the sound from coming out.

Bass sound needs a lot and/or very high density materials to get blocked. Higher frequencies are the easiest too handle and this is the reason why you maybe sense a bit of change when doing the 'clapping test'. Clapping wont do the same as a real messurement test but it'll give you a general idea of how bad the echos are in the room.

The window plug basically just seems to act like part of the wall. I don't think it's doing anymore, if even as much as the actual wall of the room. Without it though, you could easily have a conversation through the window glass. As far as blocking bass sounds, it probably only works about as good as the wall does, if that, but I can definitely tell from standing outside that it's a whole lot better than without it.

The clap test was just a simple way to see the before/after effect of the bed sheets.

I don't think that's why.

I'm not really sure if it was technically for "legal reasons", but I remember reading something about it. Apparently since Larry Lalonde and Tim Alexander were active members of Primus at that time, they chose to call their reunion 'Sausage', named after the title of an early Primus demo tape that Les, Todd and Jay had made.

Did you know that they were originally called 'Primate', but were threatened with legal action by another band called 'The Primates', so they changed it to Primus, which is Latin for 'First'?

Good Morning buddy aka RIBBIT

I was reading through a couple of your previous posts and I felt compelled to warn you to go easy on the volume control ..... For the sake of your long term hearing (which is more important then your neighbors short term )
