For me, incorrect playback speed is a deal-breaker, so I’m really frustrated to see the BBC go down this road with global masters for 4K so far. At the right speed, I’d buy dozens of 4K releases from them, but the way they’re doing them now, not a one.

The aliasing has always been there even in 576i SD. That's the film effect from before they were shooting in native progressive scan. Resampling to 480i is likely softening that down at the expense of what (little) fine detail it has. |

It wasn't done on film. I believe the effect people are talking about is from deinterlacing the original 576i50 tape footage to 576p25

There was some genuine film material however. The slow motion footage of the monks in Tooth and Claw was on film, and you can tell the difference. |

4k, through 3.2k down to 2.8k is the lower end for those combination of cameras, so a very worthy 4K iteration would be possible. Depends what they finish at though. I'd hope, even if effects are rendered in 2K for cost reasons, they master at 4k and upscale the effects. ArriRAW format also allows excellent HDR grading options if they are using that, but I think that's 2.8K max. which is still a great starting point for UHD. OK, so we haven't really a clue yet exactly what they are doing, but time will tell and at least whatever they do, there's good grounds for 4K HDR even if some or all is upscaled. Twice Upon a Time shot with a different set of cameras still looked great and I think these are superior technically. Last edited by oddbox83; 10-14-2018 at 09:23 PM. |

For the record I do slightly prefer the BDs because the compression can really be nuts on the DVDs, but I was just trying to be informative for people that it's a much closer race than it should have been.
Also I put the BDs in the DVD packaging. Love them booklets, and the BD packaging looks odd on the shelf next to the Matt Smith boxes. |

Sadly because the show was created at 25fps and the BBC chose to slow it down instead of convert to a compatible interpolated frame rate so it can be viewed at the correct speed.
Much of it is, but not all. |
