So the Signature Editions for 2019 might be The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Sleeping Beauty. Some fans think/hope that Disney will release Aladdin when the live-action movie is being released to cinemas.

2018 copyrights were renewed when the HDR/Dolby Vision passes were completed and the Atmos Mixes were added. The end credits were re-rendered/reconfigured at the same time. Studios can copyright a specific restoration/alteration of a film - makes sense for Disney to take advantage of it to protect their IP.

Yeah! The original VHS was cropped to 1.33:1, Original camera negative is right around 1.75:1, the Limited Issue DVD and Laserdisc presented the film in 1.66:1 slightly cropped on the side while showing the full height. Theatrical 1.85:1 was matted/cropped on top and bottom but showed the full width. The Blu-ray and 4K show almost the full height (cropped VERY slightly) and show the full width of the image.

Interestingly, the 1.66 version crops and opens up height at the same time. Not a huge deal but since Aladdin managed to preserve the full width of the picture with a minimal black bar it would have been nice. Seems like Beauty, Lion King suffer the same fate as in 3D conversion the cropped 1.78 has become the new standard and those tiny scraps of image width seems to have disappeared permanently. Too bad. Wouldn’t it be cool if they did open up the matte as it seems to exist? Kind of like the width of the 1.85 and height of the 1.66 version? One can dream right |
