In Japan, they'd been releasing Death and Rebirth on DVD up until 2001 IIRC, and they only started dropping Rebirth from home video releases starting with Renewal in 2003. Manga's DVDs were released in 2002, so I think it's pretty likely they would've been sent (or had the option to be sent) the materials if they were specifically releasing both D&R and EoE separately (especially since D&R used Rebirth's title cards and credits, as svenge mentioned).

This is Mangle Entertainment we're talking about, in an era when quality control throughout the Western industry was hit or miss to begin with, even before focusing in on the absolute worst R1 company to have ever existed.

I'm still more inclined to believe Manga was sent everything (or again, had the option to be sent everything), realized they could get away with doing the work a single time for both Air and Rebirth (especially since they were both released within 2 months of each other), and cut corners to minimize their workload figuring people wouldn't notice or care (and if they did, Manga certainly wouldn't care; when have they ever?). It's not like a great many people were likely to know of the differences back then, and certainly the majority of anime fans wouldn't be as obsessive or concerned with minute differences to care/complain (and they had far bigger things to be complaining about with those releases).

Manga definitely had access to the same masters that the initial Japanese movie DVDs from 1999 used. I did a side-by-side check of the framing and color timing of Death from the US and Japanese DVDs (identical), while for Rebirth the framing and color timing between the US D&R disc and the JP D&R + EoE discs (US Rebirth = JP EoE, but not JP Rebirth) were checked just to make absolutely sure.

Of course Manga also screwed up the contrast and overly filtered their encodes on top of the wholesale footage replacement on Rebirth, but that's a separate issue altogether. The only issue that I can't fault Manga with is putting the discs out in 4:3 letterbox instead of being 16:9 enhanced, as there wouldn't be any such home video masters available in Japan until the "Renewal" box set in June 2003 (almost a year after Manga's DVDs came out).

Also, those Manga DVDs are some of the most dated DVDs in my collection. Aside from the picture for both films being non-anamorphic letterbox and horrific on top of that, the menus are very confusing with the options having unconventional names (ie. “launch” instead of play), and jumping to different places on the screen. Also, there’s dated in-movie encyclopedia features that don’t work anymore. D&R actually is double sided with a second copy of the movie on Side B to support this. These actually feel like early DVDs from the 90s than something from 2002. I have other discs from 2002 that are far more watchable and user-friendly.

Surprisingly, I thought the dub at least was solid for both, and ADV was not involved. They were dubbed by Amanda Winn-Lee and Jason Lee’s Gaijin Productions in LA (the same company that did the original Read or Die OVA), with some recording in Houston (not at ADV) for some ADV reprisals. There were some issues, my biggest being the pronunciation of the E in Eva was sometimes like the name “Evan” and sometimes “EI-va” like the ADV dub (which I believe is correct, but not 100% sure). I didn’t even mind the two f-bombs. The voice acting I thought was improved from the ADV dub, and Allison Keith and Tiffany Grant really shined here IMO.

The timing is certainly peculiar, but let's not forget - Wendy Lee's credits/portfolio is huge. It could be any number of roles she's referring to.

But.... a dub rights issue would certainly explain why the Evangelion Blu Ray hasn't moved a centimeter in literally a year's time...

Amanda Winn Lee and Wendee Lee are two different voice actors.

Amanda also has plenty of other characters to her name, including several in the Persona, Shin Megami Tensei, and .hack video game franchises. It might be some kind of reissue or remaster for one of those games. I won’t jump to conclusions unless one of the other ADV voice actors posts a similar message.

I wouldn’t complain if the ADV dub is getting some kind of overhaul (as much as I like it, I know it’s still very flawed), but I wonder exactly what they would change. If it was up to me, they would completely redub the supporting cast (especially Kensuke, Toji, and Ritsuko), while leaving the main actors alone. I swear to god, if they use “First Children”...

Ever come to think she might be lending her voice in the 4th Eva movie?
Don't fourget (pun intended) about that movie.

How would Brina Palencia reprise her role from the first 3 movies?

I didn't realize Amanda never reprised her role in the Eva Movies. How odd.

Plus it’s only “pickups.” Reprising her role for 3.0+1.0 would be much more than that. Besides, she’s made it clear that she has no interest in the Rebuild movies. She confirmed at a 2019 reunion panel that it was actually her choice to not reprise Rei (she didn’t want to travel to Texas at the time), said that the franchise ended at End of Eva in her eyes, and that she hadn’t even watched the Rebuild movies.

I think it's just the TV series and the Movies, not the Rebuilds.

2019 is the past.

Things could change

I've never seen any of the series, have only watched the first rebuild movie and dropped it, hate that it is a mecha series, and completely reject dubs so don't care one sh!t about whether ADV or Netflix is better.

Day 1 UK Pre-order for me.
