It's a dodge to avoid actually talking about the movie itself for whatever reason. I find discussion of the films themselves far more interesting.

Like, for instance, the film directors who made the transition to sound best were the youngest generation at the time, like Howard Hawks and Frank Capra. People with more experience had serious trouble making the transition because they had more to unlearn like Ford and Hitchcock.

The one that breaks the rule is Ernst Lubitsch who had been making movies since 1915 or so and his first sound, The Love Parade, is a technical marvel.
I'd say hearing about a movie doesn't make it good, all it guarantees is that the movie is a meme. For example, Avatar and the plethora of "Man in the Street" interviews where people claimed to have heard of Avatar, seen Avatar, but couldn't tell you a thing about the film itself.

On your technical transition point, I could see a case that too few directors have managed the transition to streaming from traditional TV/theatrical.

Yep but Fight Club felt like the one where Fincher was set free entirely. Alien3 and Seven were studio movies through and through but with Finchers incredible talent attached.

Having the first real freedom of his movie career in Fight Club resulted in a movie that was so forced in its "trendyness", so desperate to be "cool" that it was almost awkward to watch. It smacked of smugness. To be fair a lot of late 90s movies tried too hard, Lock Stock, Trainspotting etc. He returned to maturity with Panic Room and we haven't seen the smugness of Fight Club since thankfully.

What about "The Game?" That came out in between "Se7en" and "Fight Club."

That's why it's an unpopular opinion. Do you know where you are?

Like the original poster, I’ve also chosen to ignore that movie.

Right with ya here. I still like it but it has the least rewatch-ability of the OT.

As for unpopular takes? OK, Martin Scorsese’s best film is Goodfellas and honestly, you can have the rest of them. Nothing else he does or did ever resonates with me. And, the same three people are in ALL of his movies, LOL.

The best films are Goodfellas and Taxi Driver. Soft spots for King of Comedy and Hugo. Keep the rest. I think they are super boring.
I think The Departed is a great movie but that is pretty much beat for beat with Infernal Affairs so I don't know how much credit he can take for that.

Yes - his films have a tendency to meander and overstay their welcome, outside of Goodfellas and perhaps Taxi Driver. Boring describes most of his movies though.

Don't know if it's unpopular or not but after watching Evil Dead Rise today, I come to this conclusion.

Evil Dead 2013 > All the other Evil Dead movies

Alien3 isn't any good but it is still the best Fincher film.

Does Casino have the same issue as Goodfellas, in that Pesci's personality dominates the movie, once is character is gone it feels like the movie is over.

Alien 3 is Fincher’s best movie? I think it’s his worse. The first time I saw it I hated it but years later I gave it another chance based on its own merits rather than a follow to Aliens (the killing of Hicks and Newt offscreen infuriated me). But I put that all aside when I watched it again with expectations adjusted. Second time around I still thought it was crap.

Doesn’t Fincher himself hate the movie?

Haven’t seen Casino but it is on my list as I have bought it.

Martinfly's design in The Fly II is better than the original Brundlefly from the remake.
