I was first exposed to the show via JP DVD fansubs way back in the day, so when I got the domestic DVDs, I was super bummed that they weren't the final version of the show, especially considering the differences in the recap episodes (which I always watch for every show for completionism reasons, heh). I seem to recall the JP DVD recaps being really entertaining with the new narration and the inclusion of viewership polls and stats to give additional insight into the work. But then again I loved the popsicle stick episode too, and any time a work experiments with genre convention or strays from the norm.
Thanks muchly!! The recap episode does sound much more interesting (and yeah, I watch them too...) And I shoulda known there were some changes to the sex scene.

Damn it's not English friendly. I hope this company releases this cut of the film in USA, and I hope we get Gunbuster at some point to

No, but with it being solicited, it’s likely we’ll be seeing an English friendly release in the near future. The ultimate question is who will be releasing it: Funimation? GKIDS? Netflix?

Actually, the original Death is available as an extra on the Dybex DVD called Neon Genesis Evangelion The Feature Films DTS Edition (French subtitles only). Beware: Death had desynchronized audio on the first pressing. This was fixed for subsequent re-releases.

What is taking Anime Limited and GKIDS so long for more information to come out?

I always wondered what that third DVD on the French DTS release actually contained (as the Japanese DTS release only had two discs), but I was never able to pin it down myself for confirmation. It probably didn't help that the only images I ever saw for it were the stock image on Dybex's site showing the three DVDs (with the one whose label is visible stating that it had Death[True]²) not to mention that their listing didn't break down the bonus material, and this photo of the front and back that someone posted on Imgur which was of no help at all.

Of course this leads me to several questions, the most obvious one being where exactly did the source material come from (as Gainax never put out the original "Death" out on Japanese home video until the 2015 BD, and the only standard-def D2 video masters of the era that I can think of were of Death[True] (for its January 1998 airing on WOWOW satellite TV) and the much more well-known Death[True]² version (for the 1998 Laserdisc / 1999 DVDs).

Either way, I can't imagine watching any version of Evangelion:Death in PAL, as the nasty 4% speedup would ruin all its classical music.

Approvals, most likely, and wanting it to be fully finalized so as to not have any delays is also a very likely reason.

I've just learned to be patient when it comes to NGE at this point, considering the franchise's long history with waits and delays :P

Agreed. Evangelion has had a very long history of home video delays, dating all the way back to its original VHS/LD releases in Japan. While the first nine volumes (w/ 2 episodes each) were put out in the first week of each month between Feb-Oct 1996 inclusive, the wheels completely came off after that. To wit:

Volume 10: Dec 1996 (2 months since the previous volume)
Volume 11: Feb 1998 (14 months)
Volume 12: Jul 1998 (5 months)
Volume 13: Aug 1998 (1 month)
Volume 14: Sep 1998 (1 month)

Of course this likely didn't affect too badly those who managed to tape all 26 episodes from over the air during its broadcast run(s), but still I can imagine that the otaku were less than pleased about the situation given that many had already paid ~50000 JPY total for the first nine volumes before the delays started.

They just announced it too early because they wanted to be the first to do it.
"Muh benis".
Selecta Vision already stated it should come by the end of 2021 in Spain. And they're generally acceptably fast for releasing stuff.

My bet would be GKIDS as they recently acquired the US physical media rights to the TV series & "Revival of Evangelion", while it seems that Funimation has been frozen out of extending any of their licenses for the Rebuild films (as evidenced by 1.11 being OOP for some time now).

Of course after the entire 3.33 localization fiasco I can certainly see why Studio Khara would want nothing to do with Funimation beyond what was already contractually obligated at the time.

Assuming Funi's rights for the three Eva Rebuilds are frozen out and will eventually expire, I reckon Khara is waiting for all three films prior to 3.0+1.0 to be available for a distributor like GKIDS (and Anime Ltd in UK) to license all four films in one go. 3.33 will probably be a while since that was announced by Funi back in June 2013 (upon checking, the license announcements by Funi were 1.0 in December 2008 and 2.0 in July 2010).

Hmmm, so maybe a 10 year license? Don't remember exactly when 1.0 and 2.0 started to disappear, but I think that sounds about right, timing wise. So just about exactly 2 years left for 3.33, in that case.

RACS noted the 1.11 Blu-ray as OOP on June 12, 2020, though 1.11 began to disappear around April/May 2020 (think it was somewhere here where it was first noted, and what led to me posting about it on Fandom Post).

Believe me, the irony of the 1.11 movie going out of print before the fourth movie was ever released does not escape me...

On July 23, 2020, RightStuf then tweeted out a link to a bunch of stuff that was discontinued, and the 1.11 DVD was in the list that WTK compiled.

Keep in mind that the original contract likely wasn't 10 years, it was most likely that it got renewed at least once. 2.22 is currently widely available, any stocking issues should have been the result of FUNimation's master distributor move that led to zero releases scheduled for April and things didn't get fully back up and running until last month.

What's your take on 3.33 suddenly becoming very scarce on US store shelves in the last couple months? While I'd like to think that it's solely due to said master distributor issues, I did notice that it's been just over five years since it got released on DVD/BD (i.e. 02/02/2016) which might be more than a coincidence.

Of course that assumes that the home video licensing agreement with Funimation for 3.33 was for exactly 5 years and that the "clock" started on its final release date, but at the very least it's a plausible series of events that would explain the retail situation.

No retailers ended up delisting it, if they had, then I'd say the sky is falling. Though, taking a peek at the FUNimation Shop, they've delisted 2.22 and only the 3.33 Blu-ray is available, no DVD. Delistings are the strongest indicator of something truly being OOP, at the moment RightStuf, Best Buy, and Target have 3.33 as out of stock, but not delisted. RACS still has both the Blu-ray and DVD and not at scalper pricing. Interestingly enough, he's delisted the 2.22 DVD, only the Blu-ray is available. We'll find out soon enough if those are going to go as well as we're coming up on the norm of licensing contracts here for 2.22 and 3.33. Obviously I'd get 2.22 and 3.33 if you don't have them sooner rather than later given what happened to 1.11. We have no clue if FUNimation will renew them, if GKIDS will get them, or what.

FUNimation's license for 3.33 began in 2013, so we're on 8 years here.

Thanks for the heads-up on the retail situation and especially the RACS suggestion for 3.33's BD. I guess as of this moment I'll make the following recommendations to those from North America on /r/evangelion that are currently searching for copies of the Rebuild movies to purchase in the immediate term:
  • 1.11 - Hong Kong BD (sub-only, Region-A "locked")
  • 2.22 - Funimation BD (readily available new at Amazon for $21)
  • 3.33 - Hong Kong BD (for sub-watchers due to its superior PQ, same provisos as the 1.11 BD) or the Funimation BD (for dub-watchers, available for $26 new from RACS).
