I've been reading these arguments for years why DS9 and Voy won't be remastered. Frankly, I'm just not buying it.

These shows are basically "found money" to the suits at Paramount. All the hard work has been done. They just have to bend over and pick up the money. And we are far, far removed from the technological world that did the TNG remastering. The silliest thing I hear is the (supposedly complex) organizing and scanning of the film elements. Are you kidding me? Hire me to oversee the project! I'll hire half a dozen recent film school graduates on one year contracts and we'll get it done inside 12 months!

And each series (not seasons, Series!) will get done for the cost of 1 epidode of Discovery. Where do I send my resume?

B5 sets a precedent but it’s not quite apples to apples as I *believe* it got a cut negative so there’s hunting around for umpteen separate pieces of film, scanning them all one by one and then doing a digital conform, you just scan your cut neg. The former isn’t an impossibility of course, but it just adds to the timescale and thus expense of the project. And as the B5 VFX were not re-rendered, just upscaled, that’s also something which saves on costs.

Suits don’t think like us regular folk. Once the TNG set wasn’t going to break even, the other shows probably fell off their radars entirely. But maybe someone brings it back up after Picard ends next year and that’s one less new show to pay for.

Yes, you're probably right about the cut negative, but if Paramount would do a rebuild and insert the old, wonky effects footage, live action or not, taken from the best available source and put on Blu, I'd still be very happy.

They probably won't do that because people would pass out from switching from a new HD/4k (I can dream) scan of the negative with 25 year old Made for NTSC effects.

Note for suits, Picard is in DS9 episode 1

That was so long ago though. In the soon to be world of 2023, everything done to TNG will be cheaper, faster and better.

For actual HD the most cost effective solution would be their original plan for TNG that they show some clips of in the extras: scan the 35mm footage and upscale the effects footage from the surviving sources as best as possible. It would still be quite a lot of work and have issues but that would make it more feasible to do at a lower cost.

Ultimately what they should've done already with both shows is to do a fresh transfer of the standard def masters to at the very least have brand new 480p masters for disc, broadcast and streaming. This would eliminate the baked in aliasing in all the effects shots and make the set footage look much better. It wouldn't be HD, but it would be a damn big improvement.

With inflation at over 8% for well over a year now - cheaper isn't the word.

Film scanning and editing wouldn't be any faster either. There were still shots in TNG they couldn't find the negative for.

If one is building a house, the best time to start is now. Your parents prices won't be coming back anytime soon.

That would still be a lot of work for little gain. It wouldn't even be HD. And upscaling those effects would not look great on modern 4k TVs of any reasonable size.

For the money id like it in better condition bit not excited to start an expedition Around town
I had a preorder that arrived totally crushed on the sides, and one of the corners was broken open. I returned it for a refund. I was thinking of giving up on the Complete Adventure, but on impulse took a trip to my local Best Buy.

Although the app said they had copies in stock, I couldn't find any. I had to wait until an employee was free. He was friendly and helpful and said there were apparently two copies out back. I asked if I could see both of them, because of the issues with damage.

He came back with both of them. One copy had a crease along the top edge. Not terrible, but the other copy had no flaws at all that I could see! On top of that, it was on sale and so cheaper than the copy I had returned. Success!

It really seems that buying a copy instore is the only insured way to get a decent copy of this set. Good luck everybody!

Congrats! I already have one, the UK version. But for s&g, I checked my local Best Buy online, and they have stock too. I let friends know who might be interested.

Awsome you got it on sale! I feel like crushed boxes is a new status quo yikes

To anyone who's got one in "mint condition," good luck trying to keep it that way. That outer sleeve is likely to buckle just from the act of picking it up.

If the holder itself was more like a book than a binder, the odds of having it in decent condition would have been much higher for everyone.

Right. I never have issues with digibooks arriving with crushed spines. They're pretty solid. These flimsy binder-style releases always get crushed.

Yeah, I kept the shrinkwrap on mine. I just removed it on the one side so I could slide the contents out. It should give a little more protection. It is delicate though so handle with care

The only good thing about the 2009 BD set was how each disc got its own slim Viva Elite case.

I think by luck they got TMP right. Honestly I said the same a few pages back, the 2009 disc of TMP is my runner up to the 4K DE. In my view it looks better than the TE/SLV 4k and TE remastered Blu.

For that film alone the 2009 Blu actually works, TMP is not so yellow and is pleasant to watch for the TE version of the TMP.

On a side note the new 4K of STII has the proper red uniforms on my DV setup that is quite muted on the earlier remastered Blu of the TE/DC of STII.

Agreed. I would honestly be satisfied with this. Looking at some of the SD-BD releases by Discotek as an example (most notably "Juspion"), the results are good. The inherent compression issues of MPEG2 are eliminated, so you're left with presentations that accurately represent the broadcast masters . . . AND take up very little disc space.

Paramount could easily fit a single season on two discs in a quality that spanks the DVD counterparts and at a very reasonable price. It won't ever happen, but I'd buy those SD-BD seasons in a heartbeat.
