How would you guys feel about James Cameron if he was able to convince the whole industry to start restoring all movies with his process and technology?

To be clear, I'm not saying I believe this will happen. I don't.

The vast majority of 4K transfers being done in the UHD era range from good to amazing.
I have yet to find a single fault with all the 4K Blu-Rays I have purchased since 2018.
But then again, it's thanks to this site and its reviews if I didn't purchased average-looking discs over the years.

It was the most terrible remaster job I have ever seen in years: movie had unnatural-looking skin tones, 0 natural film grain and a persistent green hue that made the movie look like it was shot with foggy lenses.......it was utterly garbage, compared to the fine 1978 original version with mono audio that I owned on VHS for years.

Sometimes it's better to leave classics alone or, at least, if you're gonna remaster a movie, do it without making it look like it was some sort of sci-fi/CGI fest.
And that's where, in my opinion, studios like Criterion, Shout, Sony and many others excel.

The last time for the DVD releases...

There's also a "35mm" version on the internet, with this unedit theatrical cut + the extended scenes taken from the bonus contents... the picture is too "crude" in comparison with any other source

The UHD looks great for the most part

It's a shame 10% of this effort is put into other catalog titles
The good thing about that 35mm scan (and others 35mm scans I found online) is that it has the untouched and louder original DTS 5.1 Cinema mix and the Optical stereo mix, other than the DTS and Dolby 5.1 from the LaserDiscs.

It's worth have it, if you wanna hear the surround mix as it was played in cinemas.

I am certainly curious. Especially for Aliens.

A theatrical mix is not meant to be heard in the space of most home environments.

There is a whole mess in regards to levels and EQ and how the audio interacts in such an environment but the essential is that it is mastered for large spaces.

AI can actually add details that were never there. Sometimes AI even hallucinates.

Just dug out the old 4-disc DVD to watch the ShoWest trailer, Enya music and all, and this movie still gives me chills after all this time, even on a frickin' trailer. As James (I think) said it's got raw audio and plenty of different takes than what ended up in the movie, there's even a brief shot of Cal twatting someone with an oar which is where he originally clobbered Fabrizio I think?

The music does make me chuckle, it's all temp stuff and yet the final product sounded eerily similar

Yes. James Cameron needs to head a film restoration company for the likes of Shout, MVD, and Arrow.

We also need Lowry to come back in prominence for Kino, Criterion, and Sony.

And L'immagine Ritrovata needs a US division to make sure any films that need a restoration get them.

You know what, Cameron should be the face and primary consultant for the US arm of L'immagine Ritrovata. Those restorations would be fantastic.

It's not been confirmed anywhere that AI was used to upscale any footage.

The end credits basically confirm that the previous 4K scan was used and then additional 4K remastering was performed afterward.

Yes, which where the "additional 4K remastering" part comes in - who the hell needs to re-remaster the existing (and very good) 4K remaster, unless your name is James Cameron? He wanted some of Peter Jackson's proprietary AI special sauce and boy did he get it

It seems to be a synth version of the melody from the Titanic score, probably put together by a trailer music company specifically for that trailer.

That said, it does segue seamlessly right into My Heart Will Go On at the very end, so I suppose it's possible that it's the original synth backing track for the song, with Celine Dion's vocals removed.

Heh. I'm watching the 2005 DVD with Cameron commentary, oddly enough I've not spontaneously combusted yet from watching a DVD.
