I would go for the annotated.Have both that and the Alan Lee illustrated,and while the Lee illustrated one is nice,so is the annotated with a wealth of information pluss several illustrations and covers made in different countries and therefor different styles.Can't go wrong with either I suppose...

All three are excellent and you can't go wrong with any of these editions. The Annotated Hobbit has the most background information about the story. It includes as an appendix "The Quest for Erebor", which is Gandalf's reckoning (after Sauron was defeated) of how the events of The Hobbit came to be. The Alan Lee version contains his usual great artwork, but is somewhat darker and more serious than the art in the Michael Hague edition. I prefer the Michael Hague edition because the art is more colorful and seems to be a better match for the mood of the story. I begin reading it every year in April, which is when the events of the Hobbit begin.

Alan Lee illustrated edition looks very nice but I will go for the annotated edition.

Already bought The Silmarillion(illustrated by ted nasmith 2nd edition)

Grandbob, you have this edition right?

lol.Probably say so in the book,but didn't know that.Know that LotR begins in the fall.Do you start to read that then too?Seems proper.

Haven't seen that Hague edition,so will check that one out if I get a chance.

I always prefered his artwork over Lee's.More dramatic and colourful,but know it's a personal taste thing.

PS:Why not get both if you love the book?Then you can alternate between them Me,I love the book so have 5 editions of it:Paperback which was included in a textadventure version of the book,HarperCollins limited edition box (with maps,postcards,etc.),Alan Lee's illustrated edition,the anotated one and a newly purchased pocket hardback edition.Next in line to read is the last one

Yes. That is a great edition. It not only has the superb Nasmith paintings (unfortunate that Jackson didn't involve him in LotR or apparently now The Hobbit), but it also includes a long letter by Tolkien that provides his personal synopsis of the story.

I always begin LotR around Memorial Day weekend (shortly after I finish The Hobbit) so I can read it leisurely on my back deck throughout the summer, usually finishing sometime in August. I read other novels throughout the year, but I never tire of LotR.

I'm almost embarassed to admit how many different editions I have of both The Hobbit and LOTR.

I always start reading The Fellowship of the Ring right after Christmas, as that is when the Fellowship leaves Rivendell. Not sure why I do this, but it always works out that way. I just finished reading Helms Deep today. I know I am slow, but I enjoy reading the trilogy and taking me time.

I always end up taking more time with FotR than the others.Seem to enjoy it more.Great trilogy,but the first apeals more to me.Maybe it has to do with the openess of the story at that point-even after several re-reads.Dunno.

I first read The lord of the rings books in my teens. I fell in love with them. I have the old version in paper back also have them in hard cover. The first time a read The Hobbit was in grade 6.Loved it right away. I cant wait for the release of the Hobbit.

I was a little pretentious brat when I was a kid. I would buy books such as these to make me appear more sophisticated. In fact, I even bent the books so the creases in the spine would be sufficient evidence that I read them.

Not overly impressed what with the trailers I've seen, looks much too polished and dare I say annoying for my tastes. (Damn singing...)

I wish Jackson would go back to his roots as a great B-movie director instead of the overly long fantasy epics.

Makes me wonder what the final shot in the film will be.
