Must've really been limited as I can't find this 4K set anywhere. Only the 2015 collection.

Yes, I think they are limited, very. ...JP 4K quadrilogy.
...Like The Matrix 4K, Saving Private Ryan 4K, Gladiator 4K, Braveheart 4K, Die Hard 4K, Fury 4K, The Incredibles 4K, Close Encounters 4K, The Bridge on the River Kwai 4K, The Patriot 4K, Unforgiven 4K, ...catalog 4K movie titles. ...A whole bunch of Star Wars: The Last Jedi from Disney 4K though, same for Thor: Ragnarok 4K, Black Panther 4K, ...all that new Disney 4K Atmouse sound stuff. What I don't understand is why did they opt to use the old standard BD for this project? According to their description they've basically created a HDR grade using the highly compressed 8-bit rec709 of the BD as their source. Why didn't they use the UHD as their source instead? Given it is already 10-bit WCG (and mastered at 1000 nits probably) I would assume it would be a significantly more suitable source for such an undertaking? ![]() |

I'll be honest, I'm not seeing the DNR. What I am seeing, however, is a master that's upscaled. I suppose it's nice to have a non edge enhanced copy with a smidge of HDR I guess...
If I had to keep it brief, the entire script is made of story beats that are completely unearned. It's like Trevorrow wanted all these Spielberg-esque beats but didn't understand the connective tissue needed to make them feel organic. Last edited by Lt_Cobretti; 06-13-2018 at 04:51 PM. |

JP2:LW shows great improvement in detail. OT: "The Matrix" looks a lot more detailed too. "Saving private Ryan" and "Braveheart" do pretty well. |

Watched the first Jurassic Park again last night, my second time since getting the set. I’m still obviously in the ‘hey, it could have been better’ camp, but I just wanted to reiterate again that it’s not nearly as bad as everyone tries to say it is. Skin tones are where they’re supposed to be at, colors are also where they’re supposed to be as far as I can tell, and while quality varies from scene to scene, this still blows the old Blu-ray out of the water.
One thing that sort of bugged me was that I remembered how there was talk about the red parts of the Jurassic Park tour SUV’s being purple. I think people enter a film these days with preconceived notions and memorative nostalgia and look for anything to nitpick about. The red spots are RED. They at times APPEAR purple because during the ‘pre-storm’ portions of the time on the island, certain shots have more of an overcast sky than others. Thanks to this UHD and HDR implementation, I can finally notice how much daylight can vary from shot to shot… the portions of the truck that look purple are because the highly reflective surface of the vehicle is mixing with a blue sky… and red and blue make what? Bingo! But other shots where things are more overcast, the red is perfectly red. More than that, the T-Rex scenes actually look blue, forget what any screenshot comparisons out there show. Maybe not ‘holy crap it’s stupid saturated’ blue, but an appropriate amount. I get the disappoint overall but I still can’t understand why people have been crapping on this as much as they have. I guess that’s the nature of the internet, though. It’s either all or nothing these days. I did notice at times in Jurassic World – as amazing as it looks overall – that sort of ‘screen door’ effect when Bryce Dallas Howard is on-screen. It only happen for like a split second once the film cuts to her, but it goes away in a flash. I’m not sure why the encode has trouble stabilizing her for a split second, and then levels out again. It’s really the only issue that I had with how that disc looks. I’m probably going to finally get around to watching The Lost World tomorrow, since I’m having my son see all the JP films prior to the new one, and then JP3 maybe Sunday. I’ll post some impressions of those then. |

So far, I've watched the first 3 films in UHD. The first and third films appeared to be only minor upgrades from the earlier 2D Blu-rays. The second film, like others have mentioned, has the biggest improvements all-around. Detail in all 3 is amazing. But 4K resolution does no favors for the 25 year-old CGI in the first film (the raptors in the kitchen look almost cartoonish at times). I think I prefer the 3D version of the first film over the 4K version.
Looking forward to watching JW in UHD in the coming week before watching the newest film in theaters next weekend. I've been watching the UHDs with my 2 boys that are now 11 and 8 years old. They love all of the JP films (especially the 3rd as they are both huge Spinosaurus fans). |
