TS2 came out in 1999. There was no digital projection, not really until Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones in 2002.

A direct digital transfer to Blu-ray of Toy Story & Toy Story 2 may in fact have better perceived resolution than when they were scanned to film and then projected.

I seem to recall that, when TS2 came out, there were a tiny handful of digital theaters, mostly in the big cities (L.A., NYC and Chicago).

Nothing beyond the prototype stage, and I can't find anything noting TS2 was shown digitally.

Quote:
Early DLP projectors, which were deployed primarily in the U.S., used limited 1280×1024 resolution or the equivalent of 1.3 MP (megapixels).
Several feature films were shown in 1999 using DLP prototype projectors and early wavelet based servers. For example, Walt Disney Pictures Bicentennial Man was presented using a Qubit server manufactured by QuVIS of Topeka, Kansas. DVD ROM was used to store the compressed data file. The DVD ROMs were loaded into the QuBit server hard drives for playout. The file size for Bicentennial Man was 42 GB with an average data rate of 43 Mbit/s.
Episode II was really the first wide release in Digital Cinema.

Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones by Cinecomm Digital Cinema (then led by digital cinema pioneer Russell J. Wintner) [11][12]. This first digital delivery and exhibition of a full-length feature film to paying audiences is widely considered to be the defining moment for digital cinema's commercial viability.

What are you doing in a blu-ray forum?

You're actually telling someone to lighten up because they're suggesting that a computer-generated ultra-HD animated feature will be better served by 1080p media than 480p?

This statement that we constantly see, that "it's the same movie", is perhaps THE most ignorant thing anyone can say considering that the art of film is the art of motion pictures, and therefore serving the motion picture with the most transparancy possible is allowing the film to communicate in the most effective way.

If you take a film and downrez it and downsize it for DVD or TV or VHS you don't have "the movie" any more. You may have "the story", but that's not "the movie".

Just like if you xerox the Mona Lisa, you don't have the painting anymore. You have a dumbed-down copy that can't tell you everything that the original image had to say.

This is well understood by everyone else at this forum. If you don't agree, then don't post here.

Actually, Blu-ray compares to the quality of 35mm cinema very well, in some cases better if we compare to the quality of the average release print.

For the last time, i'm not. The blu-ray is fantastic - my argument is that, in terms of 'need', people can live with DVD's, particularly with CGI films like this. Just relax for gods sake...
Again, if you don't "get" being passionate about blu-ray, then leave. This forum is for Blu-ray enthusiasts.

BTW, we don't "need" films at all. we can survive without movies. Movies are art. Art is wonderful, but not necessary for survival. So if we're all caring enough about the art of film to be talking about a title anyway, then it stands to reason that we can be excited about the transparency of blu-ray without the "need" wildcard getting thrown in as some sort of justification.

Toy Story and Fantasia are two very different films. A Blu-Ray is going to compliment the sound and artwork better from Fantasia than Toy Story, which most kids that watch it won't take notice. I'm 28 and can assure you, wouldn't have been assed whether I had the choice of a blu-ray, red-ray, green-ray or DVD back in 1999 when it was re-released.
What are you talking about? How does 1080p not benefit Toy Story just as much as Fantasia? Are you blind? Have you ever seen a CGI film in 480p and then compared to 1080p?

Sure Fanstasia will be wonderful in HD. But so will Toy Story. I think it's safe to say most of us are passionate about HD becase we adults, ourselves, plan to watch the films. Your suggestion of Toy Story as somehow being watched by kids versus the adult collectors here is a bit baffling.

Hey, thought you all might like this. We get a first look at the cover art thanks to the booklet inside of the UK "Dumbo" Blu-ray.

You need to read the Toy Story 1 Blu-ray Review:

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDRev...dvd_review.htm

"My first impressions were that, of the 900+ Blu-rays I own, Toy Story is quite possibly the most impressive looking and sounding. This is a prime example and I'll wager it actually looks better than theatrical - dependant on your individual system."

Also, I am highly anticipating Fantasia on Blu-ray!

at last night's screening of Waking Sleeping Beauty - Don Hahn during the post film Q&A mentioned that the film he produced "The Little Matchgirl" will be an extra on the Fantasia bluray.

Which sounds a lot like the "third disk" that everyone's speculating about WILL be the collected "Destino" shorts, and a few new material along with the Anthology museum.
Hard to tell whether that's a boxset in the UK booklet or the single disk.

i only read the first page so if this has been mentioned just ignore me lol

this is from a Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment press release in September..

Quote:
Anaheim, Calif. (D23 Expo) – September 10th, 2009 – Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment announced the launch of the new Diamond Collection today at the D23 Expo. Diamond Collection is the definitive collection of the Walt Disney Studios most historic and beloved animated classics that will debut on Blu-ray™ Hi-Def.

Beginning with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on October 6, the Diamond Collection comprises an additional 13 of Disney’s most treasured titles, including: Beauty and the Beast; Fantasia and Fantasia 2000; The Lion King; Bambi; Cinderella; Lady and the Tramp; The Little Mermaid; Peter Pan; The Jungle Book; 101 Dalmatians; Sleeping Beauty; and Pinocchio.
Quote:
Kicking off the new worldwide collection in October will be Walt Disney's first full-length animated feature film, the one that started it all, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Two titles will be selected each year, including Beauty and the Beast and Fantasia in 2010, as Blu-ray Diamond editions, each title will be released from the Disney vault for a limited time.
Disney also has Beauty and the Beast listed as being released on November 27th.. nothing about Fantasia though. if they're doing Fantasia and Fantasia 2000, I think they should release them on the same day. They don't mention Dumbo at all, but it'd be pretty stupid to release it overseas and not here.

The third disk of the '00 DVD "Fantasia Anthology" boxset was the complete Bonus Extra collection of sketches, storyboards and discarded concepts.

Think that's going to constitute most of the mysterious "Fantasia World" that the trailer trumpets, in addition to the above-named completed shorts and some "new material", unquote.
(Although not sure if "World" is either going to an actual boxset-extra disk, or is just going to be an immersive "theme" of extras spread out over both releases, like their current "World of Ghibli" theme on the Ponyo and Totoro disks.)

I think the same thing. I guess it is so 1995 to call something just a Special Edition etc. Now they have to do oddball subtitled editions like for movies like Ferris Bueller... does it really need to be called Bueller bueller edition? Sorry but it is lame and creates cover art eyesores.

At least Disney sticks to Diamond Platinum editions but I say just give me the special edition of 50th anni. ed etc but keep it simple and classy.

It could be worse, we coudl get Beauty and the Beast Belle Goes to the Ball Edition, or the Beast turns into an Ugly Model Edition.

That's my witty one-liner from Fanstasia... I guess that movie doesn't actually have much dialogue to draw from.

Latest I've heard is that its deffo a November release, according to a Nintendo spokesman (who were promoting a Wii game that involves Mickey Mouse).

But if anyones interested, Beauty and the Beast is now available for pre-order:

As far as the Fantasia release goes, Disney is not so lazy as they are disorganized. The marketing people, tech people, and the politically correct crybabies probably don't communicate with each other, and play bureaucratic nonsense while caring only about their portion of the release, with NO regard for the customer....corporate America is ridiculous...get the films out, Disney! All you're doing is angering the public
