I'm feeling very mixed with this one, it looks visually amazing but I'm just unsure story wise. I know the story pre-dates Star Wars and soo many others, but will this just be another sci-fi adventure we've seen several times already ?
I'm a huge fan of Clive Owen which started clear back with Croupier so I will catch this in theaters.
I just don't get a good feeling that this will do very well here in the states. It's release date , like others have said is really going to hurt it.

Yeah, an underrated sci-fi gem.

If Valerian is as good as JA, I'll be happy

In a film like this, you need someone who looks likeable and non-threatening to be front and centre. Probably why Pratt is so appealing in GotG because of his affable demeanour, whereas this guy radiates cold imo.
That's my issue. All the visuals and everything look great and then I see that the main characters is some sickly looking dude from the Spiderman movie.

Don't watch Chronicle then Although I totally agree with you, at least I think he can act. Would he be my first choice in the lead? probably not..
I'm still going to check this out though.

I like Dane DeHaan especially in Chronicle. He's a great actor. My concern with this movie is the story may be paper thin and more focused on visuals then anything else. I hope I am wrong though.

At first I thought you meant the alien's facial expression and I found it way too amusing...then I saw the sign...I'm still going with a face reference on this one!

Is there any kind of comment on how closely this follows this comics?

I admit I only know of him from Spiderman so that really is not fair to judge him based on one movie. I have been wanting to watch Chronicle and I do want to watch this as I love sci-fi movies.

Marketed right, I could see this taking off and being a Guardians of the Galaxy style surprise hit; hit the wrong notes with the general audience and it'll be John Carter meets Jupiter Ascending meets Ghost in the Shell. Think it may be a huge hit worldwide, but the US could go either way. Might be smart to open in other markets earlier so they can (hopefully) advertise it here as "the worldwide smash" or "the film the entire world is talking about".
Was there ever any serious doubt that GOTG wouldn't do (very) well? It's got the Marvel brand which is another way of saying "print money"...

Um . . . yes, yes there was. There were all kinds of predictions that it would be their first major misstep (±Incredible Hulk), that people who could get behind Cap and Iron Man would balk at a Raccoon and a plant, that the schlub from Parks and Rec was not a credible leading guy, that there was no market for space opera type stuff anymore, etc etc.

Its definitely not a space opera. Western, yeah. Firefly, Serenity. Whedon was never interested?

Ahh, yes. Dane Dehaan the poor man's Leonardo DiCaprio. Still going to watch this and hoping it's not going to be a turd.

I'd rather this be about an ordinary Jane a la Jupiter Jones than space cops ("Space cops. Sure.") because I'm tired of seeing law enforcement officers as protagonists but this definitely looks like a Besson film. He can't compete with the Wachowskis when it comes to artistic brilliance but this still looks like it has ambition, which is sadly something most blockbusters these days lack.

And it's not a superhero film. Hallelujah!

I'm looking forward to seeing this, I like all of Luc's previous films & this has the Fifth Element vibe to it as well plus it is Cara.

I like how, with a few exceptions, most of the talk in this thread is about box office speculation.

If it tanks, then no more Valerian movies. Got a horrible, horrible feeling this is gonna be a GITS-style blowout. I so hope I'm wrong.
