I watched it earlier this year. I couldn't believe how bad some of the scenes looked. I think the physical props look good still. But whatever cg or animation they used from distances is bad. The running ostrage scene in particular along with some of the wide shots of the brontosauras.

It sure would be nice if you naysayers would actually look at these things before commenting on them.
Amen brother! That and people that say it looks like shit when their setup is not up to UHD standards.

Wow. You're a dick. Sorry for adoptiong into 4K before HDR even existed. A disc should not have contrast issues whether it's being shown on an SDR or HDR display. No other disc does has this issue. But your two cents clearly shows what type of ass you truly are. And I don't even know you.

How is the grain retention on this disc? Is it natural, sticky and clumpy, practically invisible, or perhaps rainbow colored for extra HDR pop?

If you have an opportunity to see it this way, it holds up even better in 3D. (Actually makes it come alive!) Better PQ than the standard BD and better 3D than the more recent JURASSIC WORLD. (Probably because, unlike most of today's hack "directors", Spielberg understands the language of cinema.)

Yeah Universal has screwed up home releases for 15 years but the problem is the people's "setup". Is that right?

Magically when Sony makes a disc, no problems at all. It's a miracle....

I don't but that's beside my point. Why does it have to be a setup problem when we know Universal track record regarding home video?

I bought my first 4K set 4 years ago this month, so I know of what I speak re: SDR conversion having viewed 100 discs or thereabouts. It may seem like plain sailing...until you hit a disc you can barely correct and it drives you crazy wondering why. I've been there, done it, got the metaphorical t-shirt.

My TV is not HDR and it looks stunning! Best looking of my 6 (LOL) UHD movies.
Oh well. I can worry about something else.

Sony sold 4K mastered 1080p discs that "upscaled back to 4K better than standard upscaled content" so maybe something along those lines.

If this disc has issues on non HDR displays then thats ridiculous.

You can't watch HDR on a non HDR TV with no SDR conversion and expect magic to happen. Your TV can't handle HDR, it won't always look correct for you.

I wasn't trying to imply anything was "extreme." I'm more saying that the Mummy movies and now Kong have more outright "pop" than most catalog movies. Ain't no pop in Goodfellas, very little in Ghostbusters, etc. In contrast Kong has scenes where fire/lava jumps off the screen and things like that. In other words, they use HDR to add pop to catalog titles more than most. How "revisionist" that is will depend on the person, but I think my raves for both movies indicate the pretty has won me over.

P.S. HighDefDigest review of this is live and insane. No real detail increase? Wha? I noticed an obvious detail and crispness increase without even A/Bing it. Also yes the contrast is hot hot hot, but as I said before it's hot in the same scenes on the BD. It was a purposeful artistic choice. I didn't notice anywhere near the loss of detail he talks about, probably because according to their gear page he is maybe using a projector? Reviews really need to mention the gear being used for UHD, but they don't.
