Sounds good. Hope you get your delivery Today as you noted earlier that it was "Out for Delivery".

Sorry for the possible clouds & weather. You could do what I'm doing: watching ALL THREE X-Men movies on Bluray!! Lol. I'm about 21 mins. into the 3rd one. Awesome AQ so far! Pics a bit grainy for my taste but per the reviewer on this site, I guess that's how it's supposed to be.

Default Dual PA 120s

I now have two PA 120s set up.

The second one arrived yesterday after I had gone to work. I just finished setting it up including calibrating it later this morning.

The location of the second one (see pic), next to the fireplace, works very well as it turns out. Both subs sit on 1 inch thick closed cell neoprene foam pads that I picked up at a local industrial supply used for damping the vibrations made from heavy machinery. I don't think I even need a riser. Those pads completely isolate the sub from the floor. Nothing vibrates on the walls or shelves around house during heavy bass content in movies.

During calibration, I did have to set the levels accordingly while playing test tones in the 20 to 40 Hz range. The first sub level control is set to 7, and the second sub's set to 5. The bass is perfectly balanced. The variable phase control didn't significantly improve the bass so I left it at 0 degrees.

There is a sense of greater depth to the bass now, like being fuller and richer.

Big Daddy is right, make no mistake about it, two subs are better than one.

I watched a few selected parts from U-571, The Dark Knight, and Knowing having heavy bass content. I still haven't been able to lift my lower jaw from the floor. What is really cool is that now I have bass everywhere in the room and not just in certain areas like near the walls. The null zone in the middle of the room filled with bass that is solid, tight and clean. Those heavy bass parts in movies are now noticeably chest thumping without being boomy or exaggerated.

I am absolutely completely thrilled with the overall improvement in the sound and the added enjoyment of watching movies especially those having lots of bass.

Hah! I'm so jealous. Looks really nice too. I keep thinking, "Maybe I could stick one between the shelves and the couch" but I don't want to wake up stuffed between said shelves and couch as my wife tries to kill me.

That cherry looks much better in your pics than it does on their website.

Thanks Aramis.

It would seem however that the black finish is more appealing than cherry to most people since those are on backorder.

Perhaps my pics will help them change their mind? Personally, I think the cherry looks great.

I hope you can find a suitable location for another one. I think your wife will agree that you made a sound decision.

Then yours has to be incredibly awesome. I love the beauty of wood especially on tile floors. Your furnishings and decor are exquisite and beautifully matched. Your speaker cabinets finished in black ash go very well with the decor. I simply love it.

When we ordered tile floors I wish we had considered the offset pattern rather than having them aligned. I really think yours looks cool.

Your room is much larger than mine yet similar with the kitchen, dining area, and living room sharing one large space. I really like the classic style of yours. I can of course see the need for two subwoofers in your room. I hope BD's 12" driver and the Dayton subwoofer plate amp perform well for you.

Hey thanks a lot bro. Yeah I would have loved to go with all cherry speakers but we thought that it would be hard to get an exact match with all our furniture(I'm an amature since I care what my stuff looks like....according to BD ). You know black goes with anything. The black PA sub looks great with my other speakers and if I can't get the AA the way I like it...I may make it my bedroom sub and get another black PA and do both subs up front. I think that would look awesome. Don't know how sure it would sound with the acoustics of my living room though. The sub crawl is tough for me...I don't have a stinking corner anywhere and just about all seating positions are open and have no wall.

So BD sold you an extra amp of his or recommended one? Either way, hope it fixes your situation with that AA sub. I would personally do just what you mentioned- send it to the bedroom and get another PA-120. Dunno that I'd put 'em both up front though with a room as big as yours. Maybe diagonally next to some seating?

*edit* After looking at your pics again, leave the one where you have it and put the other one diagonally up front.

I think people order the black one more because it matches with pretty much anything, present and future upgrades alike.

I couldn't do a sub crawl either for the second sub for the same reasons. BD had some good advice for me though in another thread (see post #38). So, I sat on the couch with my spl meter listening to some rock and urban beat, and ended up putting it next to the fireplace instead further away from it.

Right now the only direction I go with the subs is up off the floor. I may do some experimentation with that. But, I am really pleased with how the bass sounds so far with just an inch thick neoprene foam pad under the subs.

+1. However, a box that is totally black looks boring, imo.

The PA 120 cherry cabinet, otoh, has a little of both: piano black top, base and trim with cherry finish on the sides. To me, any how, it looks more interesting than one that's all black.

Please don't spread false rumors.

Poor BD send him a free 12" driver and recommended some amplifiers from Parts Express and elsewhere. Unfortunately, the only amplifier that had approximately the same size was from Parts Express.

rwojtalewicz,

In reference to our discussion about polyfill and my comments in Post #268, this may be of interest to you. I own a 15" Dayton Titanic MKIII subwoofer driver. Currently, it is in a car audio cabinet with a tuned frequency of 35Hz. I power it with a Carver amplifier that is rated 1,500 watts into 4 Ohm. The subwoofer is in my HT room and I don't use it often as I am afraid to damage the driver since a significant portion of bass frequencies on many recent Blu-ray movies are below 35Hz. A few weeks ago, I decided to make a new cabinet for the driver. I don't have the tools (saws, clamps, etc.) to do all the cutting, particularly the round cuts for the driver, bracing, and the ports. As a result, I contacted Brett Bell of Elemental Designs to see if they can build me a custom box. After a couple of weeks of discussion by email and looking at the T/S parameters of the driver and the power of the amplifier, this is the design that we agreed on. It is a relatively big box.

Physical Dimensions:
20" Wide
25" Tall
28" Deep

Internal Bracing:

Frequency Response:

When I asked Brett about the tuning of the box, he responded with the following statement:

Quote:
Port Tuning with minimal to no stuffing will be just under 22 Hz, with medium to full stuffing it should be just 19 Hz.

Oh yeah for sure, I agree with you. In fact I struggled with the same question about my Polks, whether I wanted to get cherry to match the rest of my furniture. I decided agiasnt it because what happens when you get a new tv stand or coffee table, then your speakers dont match, heaven forbid

I also ordered one of these. I figured I need a place to sleep after my wife finds out that I spent $418 for an empty box.

I wanted this, but I don't think she will allow me to have a more luxurious dog house.
