Were the movies dubbed in German originally? I know they apparently weren’t dubbed in Latin Spanish until the Netflix dubs.

A company called Zima released the movie trilogy before Netflix had the rights. Are these the same dubs they used?

The movies were dubbed in German and released by Panini in 2005, the same company that released both movies in Italy (in fact the same DVDs). I'd assume that this was some kind of sublicense by Manga Video, as the DVD carries that logo too. The German dub for the Movies used the same cast as the TV series, but had some inconsistent dialogue.

https://www.dynit.it/news/EvangelionUltimateEdition
The Italian release claims to include the "classic" Italian dub, but I assumed that they use the 2009 Dynit redub of both movies instead of the Italian dub by Panini.

Correct, it's going to be Dynit redub. Due to numerous buyouts and complicated sub-licensing schemes for the shows, most Manga dubs are nowadays lost in rights limbo anyway (and the master material being lost as well, french release of Honnéamise movie has part of the dub from a VHS rip). Also, while I can't talk for the german dub, the french one is unlistenable to. When the movies were re-released in France in 2013 as subbed only, many people reacted with a phrase like "ah yes, they didn't insult the show by not including that".

If the GKIDS release can’t include the Manga English dubs of the films, then maybe that’s what Amanda Winn Lee was referring to when she tweeted about doing “pickups” for an old character she never thought she’d voice again. It’s possible GKIDS commissioned new dubs of the films. Then again, plenty of Manga English dubs have been cleared for reissue, including GKIDS using their dub of Perfect Blue.

I wouldn't transpose that fact to english Manga Entertainments dubs so fast, but European ones in various languages. Manga had sublicensed their catalog to various long- (or short-) lived distributors which did their own dubs, and Manga never cared about those so never bothered to get the materials back.

Discotek could license Wicked City UK dub from… some unknown company which was most definitely not Manga UK recently, so it's not a dead-end. But maybe GKIDS does not want to pay that company a penny so they are re-dubbing the movies.

Well, some American English Manga dubs have had issues, most notably Black Magic M-66’s dub not being included on Maiden Japan’s DVD reissue. New Dominion Tank Police’s UK dub was also missing from the MJ DVD, and Venus Wars’ was missing from Sentai’s Blu-ray, despite it being on Discotek’s older disc. AnimEigo also didn’t include Manga UK’s dub of Megazone 23 Part 3 on their Blu-ray despite including almost all other dubs. Then again, Sentai, Maiden Japan, and AnimEigo don’t seem to care as much about old dubs as Discotek, who painstakingly tries to include every possible dub on their releases, including Manga UK’s. The only Manga dub they had issues with was Space Adventure Cobra’s because the original music needed clearing. I’m not sure what they do differently from everyone else.

Even Manga UK excluded the Manga UK Dub of Wicked City due to licensing issues...

Regarding the German Dub: Panini is still active in background, afaik they hold the German rights for the Naruto franchise (even including Boruto) - despite sublicensing everything to other companies. But if Manga held the dub?

That would actually be pretty cool if they redubbed the movies with the ADV voice actors. The ADV dub is so dated, that's mainly why I prefer the Netflix dub.

Not paying royalties or not investigating enough. Can't always blame one on the later because the chain of rights can be gigantic and half of the companies just being clueless if they do, or not, own a dub they made 25 years ago...

I do find it silly that, if someone has located the rights to a dub, the next company doesn't try to get that information from them. I can understand if they're huge competitors but it's not the case here. So probably it's the first reason, either because they're being cheap or they don't want to license something from a direct competitor (e.g Starz-Funimation affair, anyone remembers?).

I must've missed that tweet. Wonder if it's to do with Death(true)^2 not being the version that was originally dubbed back in the day. I'm not really familiar with the differences between the various Death iterations.

• Death(true) - A recut of the Death segment only, with the scenes that were moved to the Director's Cut TV episodes removed (about 4 min total). Only broadcast on TV (on premium satellite channel WOWOW).

• Death(true)^2 - A slight revision, only adding a couple of new shots to make it flow better, as part of the "Revival of Evangelion" theatrical re-release. After this ends, there's an intermission screen, followed by EoE. This is considered to be the final version.

• End of Evangelion - Feature film in two acts: Air (Episode 25' -- note the apostrophe to indicate "prime") and My Truest Heart For You (Episode 26'). Used this unusual format to have credits in the middle; and none at the end, the better to emotionally punch you in the face and run.

• End of Evangelion - Video version - splits up the two acts into two parts, to be paired with TV eps 25 and 26 on VHS and LD. Aside from adding extra credits, a next-ep preview and modified eyecatch slates, no significant changes.

• End of Evangelion - Revival version - Combined with Death(true)^2. Back to being one film. I'm unaware of any other changes made to this version. This is considered to be the final version.

Hope that clears some things up.

Which one of these versions of EoE was released on the Manga Entertainment DVD? It's been a while but I do remember the two acts with the credits in between (I believe the credits rolled by spiraling like a strand of DNA or something). Was EoE revival not released in the US in this case?

The Manga DVD has them as two separate “episodes” with credits, but no next episode previews, so I guess the first one.

A weird hybrid of the first version and EoE.

Death is the original cut, but then they went to the first half of EoE instead of the Rebirth version (which had some alternate animation)

So we never got the final “revival” version of EoE in the US, as mentioned in that list from earlier?

If you mean "Death(true)^2" then no, not until Netflix.

Unless you count "unofficial" releases though.
