I wasn't expecting much from No One Lives and ended up enjoying it quite a bit. I was.expecting MUCH more from Spring but after it was over, I felt let down. Isn't that how it always goes, though? Wasn't a bad movie, just not sure what to make of it. Will give it another view sometime soon.

This is about as good as it gets, frankly. Terrence Malick's first film is stunning, provocative, disturbing, engaging, and pretty much everything else a film experience should be. It's amazing that a film can at once be so dark and so warm at the same time. The two sociopathic protagonists are somehow characters you cannot look away from; they are simple but without empathy. There are scenes that are chilling, while there are other scenes that wouldn't seem at all out of place in any on-the-road love story.

Also, Malick being the philosopher that he is, lays American post-war society bare, provoking a lot of thought. Malick's commentary on society is not the sort of thing one would find in an Oliver Stone film, for instance (no offense to Stone, whose films I think a lot of, in general). Malick challenges the viewer to participate in the life these characters are leading -- a life devoid of what most would consider humanity. It's fascinating.

Finally, like Malick's other films, the beauty of it cannot be denied. And Criterion did more than justice to imagery of this gorgeous, disturbing film.

As I said: This is about as good as it gets.
