What Maisie Knew - 2012

Just watched this on Netflix.

Wow, this movie is so good, so well done. It seems like it's a hidden gem, a small movie that didn't make a big splash, but deserves all the praise it should get. It plays with your emotions and tugs on your heart. The girl did an unbelievable job in her role. I'm looking forward to seeing her in future roles. She seems wise and talented beyond her years. There was a nice twist to the story and luckily the movie ended on a happier note than the beginning/middle. These are the types of movies I absolutely love. What an absolute treat What Maisie Knew was.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones 1.5/5

I felt like I was watching a movie created by 14 year old trendies. Absolute garbage imo.

I only have the disc plan. I got rid of streaming the day they split the two into separate plans. Thanks though.

The Jack Ryan Collection

Movie: 3.5/5
Video: :3.5/5
Audio: 4/5
Extras: 2/5

Overall Score:69

Tom Clancy has made a huge career off of his extremely detailed and sometimes extremely technical military dramas. The “Jack Ryan” character has become one of his most famous, and most popular in the film world as well. “The Hunt For Red October” was the start of the Jack Ryan craze and, in my opinion, the best one. Ironically Paramount decided to let go of Alec Baldwin as Jack Ryan because of monetary disputes and instead hire Harrison Ford….for even more money. Ford played the character of Jack Ryan with a bit more aggressiveness than he was portrayed by Alec or even Tom Clancy’s novels himself, but the fans ate it up. Harrison Ford has that sort of charisma and charm that made him such a popular Icon. Then we finally have the nail in the coffin of the Jack Ryan saga. Ben Affleck playing our favorite CIA analyst. It actually wasn’t a bad representation at all, but back then Affleck was not nearly as mature an actor and his character came across as the sore thumb in the series.

4/5

“The Hunt for Red October” is a thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seats. It seems that the soviets have created a revolutionary silent propulsion system for their submarines. This “caterpillar” drive is virtually silent and undetectable by sonar. As you can well imagine this leaves the U.S. at a disadvantage in tracking vessels with said propulsion system. The U.S. military leaders learn of this new propulsion system on the same day that Captain Marko Ramius (Sean Connery) takes the “Red October” prototype out for a joyride. The Russian military leaders come to warn the U.S. that Ramius has gone rogue and that he intendeds to fire his nuclear missiles on the U.S. As plausible as this sounds, CIA analyst, Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) doesn’t agree with the consensus. He figures that Ramius is not the type to go rogue like this. Basing his evidence on a hunch and Ramius’ background he deduces that the “Red October” is not on an assault mission, but on a mission of Defection. Thus begins the race against time. The Race to FIND the “Red October” and see who is right… Jack Ryan… or the Russian Military leaders.

McTiernan has made countless action movies, but this was one of his first forays into a more subtle arena. Instead of balls to the walls action, ala “Predator” and “Die Hard” he creates another classic that is much higher on the suspense rather than action. The film never seems over the top ridiculous or bloated, but cruises along at a smooth pace, playing one side against the other, never revealing the hand until all the chips are on the table. It’s a tamer outing than McTiernan’s other outings, but it still proves that the man had a knack for good characters. The only flaw I had with the characters was Sean Connery’s constantly slipping Russian accent. Took me out of the picture every time.

3.5/5

“Patriot Games” upped the ante by creating a harsher and more action oriented Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford). Instead of the suspenseful PG fare of “The Hunt for Red October” we have a much harder R rating that gives Jack a bit more of the “in your face” characterizations. Here he’s in England with his family when a terrorist attack strikes. In the struggle Jack disarms one of the terrorists and ends up killing one other. While this makes him a hero in England, it leaves a hole in the life of the terrorist’s brother. It seems that the terrorist he shot was the younger brother of Sean Miller (Sean Bean), the same terrorist he ended up disarming during the incident. Making Jack and his family the next targets, Sean Miller pulls out the stops to try and destroy Jack’s life. Realizing that the only way he’s going to catch Sean is with the help of his old pals, Jack returns to Langley and employs the help of the CIA in catching this maniacal criminal.

“Patriot Games” was a bit rough around the edges and took the Jack Ryan character to a place that he wasn’t familiar with, turning him more into an action hero in some ways than most analysts would ever dream of. Harrison Ford had a good grasp of the character, but the real shining star here was Sean Bean. Playing the crazed Irish terrorist to the T he comes off totally believable as a man who’s lost everything that meant something to him and the only thing left in its stead was the soul sucking need for revenger.

4/5
Now that Harrison became the more popular Ryan we come back for one more outing as Jack Ryan. This time we’re dealing with Columbian drug lords in “Clear and Present Danger”. It seems that Jack Ryan is tasked with talking Congress into approving a bill that would give them funds to curb drug trafficking from the southern border. The only problem is that the left hand is doing something that the right hand knows nothing about. The President has authorized a covert ops mission against the Columbian drug lords in retaliation for a friend dying. While this is all well and good if nothing goes wrong, but as you can guess, something DOES go wrong. One of the Columbians escapes the bombing and takes what’s left of the U.S. black ops team hostage in his own plans for revenge. This of course, leaves Jack in a moral quandary. He’s between a rock and a hard place and now he’s got to decide where his loyalties lie. Does he blindly follow orders, or does he follow what he knows is constitutionally right. Leading a team of commandos BACK into the Columbian jungle to rescue the men that were left behind and disavowed, he must face the men who’ve made his life a hell. One of them, a drug lord who’s out for revenger and money, and the second is the President of the United states.

“Clear and Present Danger” is a little more polished than “Patriot Games”, Harrison still plays the character as gruff and no nonsense as ever, but the storytelling is smoother and doesn’t seem as cheaply made. It’s a bit tamer too with a PG-13 rating, but don’t let that fool you, it hovers just under that R rating that “Patriot Games” carried with it.

3/5
Now we have the final outing (that is until Chris Pine graces the screen) of the Jack Ryan saga. Instead of sticking with the source material, the directors and screen writers decided to go a bit off course. Instead of getting into the politics of the Russians and the U.S. over the nuclear materials, they keep the bare bones of the IDEA of Clancy’s book and just ran with it. Instead we now have Fascists who have taken control of nuclear material and have a bomb that they are using to try and play the Russians off against the U.S. As usual it’s up to Jack Ryan (Ben Affleck) to find out that it’s NOT the Russians fault and try and stop world war III before it starts.

Of all the people who I imagined playing Jack Ryan, Ben Affleck was not one of them. I really respect Affleck as a director and he has matured in his acting abilities 10 fold, but at this day and age Ben was NOT in his acting prime. Jack came across more as a stoner with Ben Affleck’s famed “one expression the entire movie” modes. Liev Schrieber helps as much as he can, but there’s not much he can do. However with Morgan Freeman playing a main character you can’t give up all hope. Pulling every last bit of acting ability he could the film coasted along as just “mediocre” instead of a downright snooze fest thanks to his down to earth portrayal as Jack’s mentor.

Video 3.5
Video wise these are the same discs as released individually here and have been reviewed to death. Solid 3.5/5 for video across the board with the best of the batch being “Hunt for Red October”. These were all early Paramount AVC encodes from the beginning of the format era when they were still mastered for HD DVD so there’s a lack of bitrate and some thick softness applied to them. Again “Hunt for Red October” comes out looking the best of the batch, with some nicely done black levels and a clarity that surpasses the rest

Audio4/5
Audio wise it’s a bit of a mixed bag. “Sum of All fears” and “Clear and Present Danger” are both rather mediocre to good with some decent effects. My only complaints are that there is some missing LFE in both and surround usage was marginal at best. Still a decent encode, just wish there was more to them. “Hunt for Red October” is excellent with some fantastic sounds, the pinging of Sonar is crystal clear and the sonic vibrations from the warheads light up the surrounds beautifully. The Best of the bunch actually is “Patriot Games” which gives a truly stunning presentation on Blu-ray. The auditory detail and precision are spot on and truly a joy to listen to. Overall all the tracks sound quite good, but “Patriot Games” is the stand out here.

Extras 2/5

Patriot Games
• Patriot Games Up Close

Clear and Present Danger

Overall: 3.5/5

Now all of this discussion leads up to one question. How is this different than the individual releases that Paramount released years ago? Well the answer is simply this.... a slip box. This collection not only includes the EXACT same encodes as the previously released single editions, but they include the same artwork and are individually shrink wrapped inside of a newly pressed slip box. in other words, if you already own the individual releases there is NOTHING new in this box set except for a cheap cardboard slipbox. Had there been a bonus disc with some extra content I could see the point in double dipping, but in reality this is nothing but a combined packaging for people who HAVEN'T picked up the individual releases. Overall it's not a bad boxset, but the price needs to come down a bit since there's no incentive to get the boxset over the already cheap individual releases besides keeping them in one location.

I think you would enjoy all of them to some degree Al. But I think you'd get a really big kick out of Catfish. It's a wild and strange ride for a "documentary".

Ninja: Shadow of a Tear (aka Ninja 2, 2013)

The spawn of JCVD is back in action again with his own personal franchise about ninjas...well American ninjas which appear to be much better than Japanese ones according to this. The first film was pretty much a cool excuse for some ninja martial arts and weapons action from Adkins, and this sequel is no different whatsoever, but this is a good thing.

A completely childish plot with unreal amounts of cliched moments and corn, but who are we kidding here its all about the fisticuffs and nothing more. And that's exactly what you get, more than last time too. Adkins wife is murdered whilst he's out buying chocolate and seaweed? so he gets mean and outta control, its time to kill EVERYONE!!!!.

The plot is so completely amazingly and utterly basic I simply can't find any other ways to describe it further. The whole thing is so shallow and unimaginative it hurts, they should of just called it 'Scott Adkins kicks ass for 1hour and 30minutes with no plot interference'. Some of the fights do seem to be quite obviously staged I found, mainly the indoor ones. The kicks and punches don't connect, fake looking breakable props and the fight extras clearly throw themselves around badly. But once the battles reach the open they really come into their own, there is an amazing bar fight (gotta have a bar fight) and a great 'Point Break' style chase sequence.

As we reach the predictable climax the fights do get really intense, the final boss fights are a blistering montage of moves that seem to defy gravity yet are clearly real time!. To be honest it becomes more a display of acrobatics rather than martial arts, you know these moves look incredible but in reality they probably wouldn't be as effective.

I hate to use this terminology but this film plays out like a videogame adaptation from the days of Double Dragon. Just look at the facts, the heroes love is killed off, he then fights his way through level after level of different bad guys in various locations...bars, hotels, dojos, enemy hideout, alleyway, prison etc...Each encounter offers a tougher adversary as he gets closer to the final level and the three boss fights. One is the bosses main henchman, then the boss and then finally the predictable surprise boss in a twist ending just when you thought it was all over.

Yes its horrendously cheesy and we've seen it all before, its been done by all the classic action heroes back in the day. This is the new gen of action hero and Adkins is the top dog as far as I'm concerned for Western martial artists. This guy can do the moves we never saw JCVD do, he's like a living beat 'em up videogame fighter and he's just as wooden to boot, in short the man is perfect. Everything you expected you get right here, the only thing you don't get much of is actual ninja suit clad action albeit one sequence at the end.

This is what a classic back to basics action flick is all about, not the hammy action comedy 'Expendables' nonsense. Adkins has easily given us some of the best retro action homage flicks (JCVD homage flicks) in the last few years. I'd like to see him do some gritty underground Eastern set tournament fight flicks like JCVD's classic 'Bloodsport' and 'Kickboxer'.

With the coy introductory title card, "Some of this actually happened," it's clear that prodigal director David O. Russell is just after irreverent fun. The screenplay (courtesy of Eric Warren Singer and Russell himself), based on an ABSCAM FBI sting operation, provides an opportunity for him to go wild on super seventies style. As opposed to offering an interesting commentary on those events or relating them to our culture today (on an interesting level at least), American Hustle is simply about capturing the feel of the era as informed by movies. That entails pairing thrumming classic rock tunes to hyperbolic camera push-ins, capturing ecstatic performances teetering on the edge of utter camp, and most of all, offering a glorious catalogue of bygone wardrobes.

It's an occasionally spellbinding rose tinted replica of the seventies, but before it can ever build narrative momentum, the frivolity foreshadowed by the title card blossoms to the fore. The feeling of déjà vu takes root the deeper we probe into a universe which flaunts its meager ambitions proudly. This disinterest in thoughtful polemics is what will either win the film its fans or ultimately disappoint those expecting a biting commentary on the hedonistic pursuits that often lead to ruin for the self-serving.

Russell cuts to chase early by thrusting his quirky characters into the confused confines of a sting operation to dupe the mayor of Camden, New Jersey to accept a bribe of two million dollars for his renovation of Atlantic City. In true David O. Russell fashion, much of this stretch consists of snappy retorts between sexually frustrated characters whose motives are pitted against one another. Conning is merely one way in which their need for alleviation manifests itself.

The cumulative effect of this mayhem may yield dramatic stagnancy, but throughout the two hours of shambles that is American Hustle, there are copious pleasures to be had. That rat-tat-tat style which Russell orders his narrative gives the picture immediate ragged energy. Again, as is the case with most of his films, he has the talents of an all-star ensemble cast at his disposal. He must be doing something right in the shooting stage to enable the confidence of his cast. "Powder up, slap on a fun wig, some fun retro designer clothing and have at it," the director seems to advise. Similar to the mechanics of the plot, theatricality and out-performing their co-stars is the rule which a bunch of veterans from his past two films, including Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, adhere to. If there's one thing terrifically right with the film, it is their natural rapport and high spirits.

Conceptually, American Hustle is pure David O. Russell, but there is a schism between the film this film wants to be and the film it ends up being. The messy way Russell constructs this film undermines any chance it has to be more than a rollicking time. As a film about mental illness, this let's-see-what-sticks approach made thematic sense in Silver Linings Playbook. But when employed here, it serves as unneeded artifice. After one too many frenzied Scorsese-influenced expressionistic closeups and twice as many shots of Amy Adam's calves and derrière than needed to get the idea that she's a sexy femme fatale, it becomes clear the film has little motivation behind all the flash. Or maybe it does have something to say, but it is of so little consequence that there isn't much of a reason to be compelled. The whole dog-eat-dog notion, that to get ahead, people will backstab one another to achieve the American Dream holds so little value now, especially if little effort is made to expound on what that conflict means today. It doesn't help that there are other 2013 releases, including Ridley Scott's beguiling monster in The Counselor, that have explored these themes in a more interesting way and with a greater degree of formal daring.

The narrative lays all it's cards down in the first act and doesn't exactly do much to complicate the stakes or catch us off guard. It is true that David O. Russell is more interested in character than plot, but he's making a caper, so the story should hold interest. There's a lot of narrative dormancy in anticipation to the rug-pull of a conclusion which aligns everyone's fates in one swift stroke. Yeah, we've seen this before, we know what to expect. There may comfort in watching a flashy throwback picture, but little urgency. American Hustle is almost as phony as Christian Bale's elaborate comb over.

yeah, that would be cool. ...while Scott isn't as charismatic an actor as Jackie or Van Damme, I gotta say he's one of the most impressively skilled Martial artist I've seen on screen in quite a while. that guy knows how to push himself.

Zoolander (2001)

This was the first film to really introduce me to Will Ferrell back in the day, its hard to think when this film came out he wasn't a big name star. Twas also the first time I saw Ben Stiller's dad on the big screen, or anywhere really, I hadn't yet discovered the joys of 'The King of Queens'.

This entire film plays out like an early Sacha Baron Cohen flick ('Bruno') but much much tamer. A very deliberate spoof and parody of the fashion/model world that is grotesque, bloated, narcissistic and embarrassing. Alongside Stiller and Owen Wilson is fellow frat pack member Vince Vaughn in an early cameo role and many many other big name stars hamming it up...or so we're led to believe.

Of course this being a film about modelling and fashion there has to be real patriots of this exclusive world involved, and there are plenty. All the big glamorous names you can think of that are connected to this vomit inducing scene are hauled out in front of the camera to show us their parody acting chops. Thing is I'm not entirely sure some of them understood they were being put in a film, I highly doubt they caught on that their lives were being poked fun at (mocked) and they were contributing towards the laughs. Just another day in the glitzy limelight for them.

I wouldn't say the humour was particularly clever, witty or sharp. Its most definitely amusing seeing Stiller and Wilson going overboard as two self obsessed male models, the clip montages at the award ceremony, their own unique dialect and visual expressions plus the 'walk off'...some great mockery going on there. Unfortunately it doesn't quite hold up for the run time in my opinion, the early golden moments dry up quickly as do the ideas.

The plot is daft of course but that doesn't matter really, its just a chance to have a pop at this ridiculous industry, maybe open some insider eyes perhaps. It all feels like your typical SNL sketch that has been stretched out but a little better than their usual fare. Its all very predictable childish and silly but that's the idea so there's no need to think into it. The only good thing about the film for me was the main lead duo and their excellent self indulgent portrayals, everything else is so so.

I totally forgot how hot Jovovich is in this film with her strict dominatrix attire, plus talk about a desperate attempt to kick start your career Billy Zane!. Why exactly are you in this?.

6/10
