Watched my copy of Jurassic World tonight and thought it was just as awesome as the first time around in the theatre.
While I fully expect The Force Awakens to be my favorite film of the year, it will be nearly impossible to have a single sequence that I find more ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I haven't watched anything for Spectre either yet, but like I told you a while back (I think), it's always been on a short list of movies that have a shot to be my favorite movie of the year. I'm not sure if I gave Jurassic World a score after watching it in the theater, but either way I can't deny that it was quite entertaining. I look forward to watching my copy... if it's all in one piece since Amazon shipped the first season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with another Blu-ray (obviously this week being Jurassic World) in a bubble mailer for the second week in a row. You think they would have learned after last week when I had to contact customer service, but that's a whole other story that isn't for this thread. |

Back to the Future II
In honor of this past week being the week in the film (October 2015) 4/5 Film is overall pretty good. But you can't get too serious about it, because it if you ponder too much you'll realize its filled with a massive inconsistency: if it is "taboo" to use a time machine to go back and create "alternate realities", then why is it ok to do exactly that by trying to stop Marty's kid from going to jail? |

24. A number that may appear low, but in Hollywood terms, is a significant number when discussing the amount of films in a certain franchise. There are properties out there spanning different genres with 5+ sequels and reboots to their original film, but none have had the longevity, and none have been quite as successful or ever-evolving as the James Bond franchise.
Film #24 in the 007 saga is Spectre, a story that takes place in multiple locations, starting off in Mexico city, where we're re-introduced to Daniel Craig's Bond, who embarks on an action-packed mission, delivering quite arguably the greatest opening sequence in a 007 film to date. It's insane and kind of defies the laws of physics, yet somehow works if you're loyal fan of this franchise and know what you're getting yourself into. Skimming through Sam Smith's mediocre "Writing's On the Wall" theme track, which is thankfully saved by the great visuals in the opening credits sequence, the story returns to London, where we last left off in Skyfall. The familiar team at MI6 including M, Moneypenny, and Q are back, and assist* Bond with his next mission. M and Q get more screentime in Spectre, while Moneypenny has less to work with, which is a shame as I loved Naomie Harris in the previous film. As James progresses in his mission, and continues to gather clues to the next location, he has the unfortunate displeasure of crossing paths with Dave Bautista's Hinx, who is just the badass that I hoped and desired for a 007 film like this one. A man of few words (no, really, I mean that) who has one goal in mind: Stop Bond, by any measure necessary. Easily the best henchman since Oddjob in Goldfinger. You won't be disappointed in his performance and time on screen. Regarding the Bond girls of this installment, Monica Bellucci is undoubtedly beautiful as ever, yet, like Moneypenny's character, is sadly underused, though more so than Moneypenny. I would be lying if I said I wasn't tepid about Léa Seydoux as a Bond girl when she was cast, even though I'm aware that the woman can clearly act well, but here I am admitting she knocked it out of the park more than I ever imagined in a role like the one she had. Next to Dave Bautista, Seydoux as Madeleine Swann was the highlight character of the film, and is reminiscent of Eva Green's Vesper from Casino Royale. The exact opposite of Bellucci's character, she gets more than enough screentime throughout to shine, and has terrific chemistry alongside Craig. Now for Christoph Waltz. I disagree with the reviews that he's barely in the movie, as I counted plenty of moments throughout the 2+ hour runtime where his presence was strongly displayed, though it may have not completely paid off until well into the final act. Through Hoyte Van Hoytema's cinematography, Sam Mendes' direction of covering Waltz' face, and Waltz' subdued performance early on, the scene taking place at the table with members of the Spectre organization became that much more tense and worrisome, and I felt that only enhanced the Oberhausen character for when he finally reveals himself later on. As for that "later on," when we finally get that moment, it sadly feels slightly anti-climactic, and if you pay close attention to the clues Bond stumbles upon early on, you can kind of see the reveal coming ahead of time. After said reveal, Waltz' explanation or motive for his actions did him no favors in my eyes, and what followed with some of the key characters seemed kind of weak and generic. However, despite the underuse of two female characters, and the bumpy reveal scene of Oberhausen at the end, those were minor nitpicks in an otherwise highly enjoyable film. Waltz redeems himself at the very, very end of the movie, Craig once again delivers as the rough and serious, yet, charming and sarcastic 007, Léa Seydoux is the best Bond girl in quite some time, Hinx is the most credible physical threat to Bond in a while, Q and M get more screentime, as well as humorous well-timed jokes, and of course, Sam Mendes at the helm with Van Hoytema doing cinematography only made this new entry in this beloved franchise that much more memorable, and will certainly be one I revisit as much as Skyfall over and over again. 4.5/5 |

Contagion (2011)
Awful, awful movie. This isnt Michael Crichton's Andromedia Strain. Its a by the numbers tale of some stupid virus thats run amock and people stop it. Fabulous. But I watch because of all thesse 'stars' right? ![]() All the subplots are underdeveloped and utter trash. And just think of all that budget that was put into the pockets of all these big stars to try and sell this pile of trash. Could have been spent for some better set pieces other then random trash bags thrown everywhere on streets. Lazy crap. Laurence Fishburne's wife looks like his daughter. Dont get me started on how they find the cure...it just pops up...stupid And then theres the pacing, editing, music, and cinematography....that looks straight out of a film from the 60s. I havent seen a film look this amateur in a looooong time. Dont waste your time with this garbage. The virus itself is nothing more then a stupid flu, its not scary at all. Only 20% of the people who come in contact with it die, but you'd think it was 100% because of how the film is edited. Watch 1995's Outbreak or Andromeda Strain or something, dont watch this garbage. 0/5 |

I seem to have slacked off on reviewing all those Bond movies. I blame real life.
![]() Anyway, I'll just throw some ratings out there from where I last left off: For Your Eyes Only: 4/5 I keep forgetting how much I love its setpieces and characters. Octopussy: 3.5/5 Same as above, but there are a few dumb parts. A View to a Kill: 4/5 Always did find it enjoyable. The Living Daylights: 4.5/5 Still is one of the most action-packed ones of the lot. License to Kill: 4/5 Pretty rough stuff, but the personal stakes are admirable, and the movie's pretty fun overall. GoldenEye: 4.5/5 It shows its age somewhat, but to this day, I still love how punchy the action, visuals, script, and everything else is. And I always loved its story. Tomorrow Never Dies: 4/5 I keep forgetting how excellent the action is. Plot feels a little standard, but everything else is top-notch. The World Is Not Enough: 3.5/5 I am somewhat ashamed to admit that I was a little too hyped over this one in 1999, and once called it my favorite. I do think it has a fairly meaningful story, but it is a rather drab, slow film. And then Denise Richards ruined everything. Die Another Day: 3.5/5 Easily the most overblown Bond movie ever made. The opening scenes do push the character above the normal limits, but then the rest becomes pure silliness. But, I give it the high points because it's consistent, non-stop fun. -------------------- Casino Royale: 5/5 Easily the most epic Bond movie of them all - it's a sprawling action-packed adventure that cuts across a number of countries, with tons of peril and incredible twists. What makes this one of the best, however, is that it has a relevant story with superbly-drawn characters, and it's filming is so slick and stylish, it makes every other Bond movie look amateurish (even the next ones). I honestly forgot how sharp the dialogue is, and how nuanced the performances are - I found myself admiring the characters the most in this film because of it. Quantum of Solace: 4/5 Editing sucks, the plot and script probably could be better, but the film is pretty beautiful at times, the action is hard-hitting, and the story has a lot of intriguing things to it (maybe too much for one short movie). Skyfall: 4.5/5 Might be the most elegantly-made Bond movie of them all. The cat-and-mouse chase might take some suspension of disbelief, but everything else is top-notch. The photography, editing, acting, characters, action, is superb. Looking at the entire Bond series now, I have the following observations:
Will plan to watch SPECTRE this Tuesday. Doesn't sound like I should expect much, but given the scores, I doubt I'll personally be disappointed. |

"Awesome" That's what went through my head the first time i saw Sucker Punch. And after seeing it a couple of times it gets better and better.
With 300 and Watchmen Snyder proved he was a great audio/visual storyteller. With Sucker Punch those movies seemed like practice. Snyder goes all out and shows and lets us hear some wonderful things. For starters, the soundtrack is amazing. Just like in Watchmen and even early on in Dawn of the Dead, the songs in here are all perfectly chosen. Also a great choice to make almost all of them into covers. Brownings "Sweet Dream" sounds hauntingly beatiful and fits perfectly. My favorite out of the bunch is definetly "White Rabbit" during the WW1 scene. And the number thats played during the train sequence, my favorite action scene in the movie, is epic. Although one favorite scene is hard to pick because Sucker Punch works best as a whole and there are so many great scenes. The basic structure of the movie is pretty simple. But what's done with it and how it evolves into something else is what makes it so good. Nothing is what you expect it to be and every scene has a couple of layers to it that need to be watched carefully as there are many hints to happend events and events that still need to happen. Also there is a lot told about the plot and how it's going to end early in the movie. This is also one of those movies where the action scenes really serve the story as they are pretty important on a narrative level. Something is told throughout all the action. The movie needs a little bit of time to get going. Not a lot and after like 10 minutes or so the movie gets going and never lets up until the end. It makes you forget the beginning that was a bit weaker. Not in terms of visuals, those were great with the enlarged button and other visual cues. But more in terms of outlying the plot device. Doesn't come across with that much impact. We get sucked into the story in a strange way. You never get lost in the story because it's made clear what's going on and how the structure of telling the story is done. Those kind of story structure we have seen lots of times but never like in Sucker Punch. We get introduced into the mind of Baby Doll in a fantastic way. And there's also where the great music cues in. And then we get to the first action scene. And it's just stellar. Real "WOW" moment and i get goosebumps everytime. Visually stunning and Snyder's trademark slowmotion is put to good use. The story goes from here to there at points after the first action scene. But luckily those are some brief moments. Before you know it you find yourself in between zombie nazis in a action scene that's even bigger than the first one. My least favorite moment has to be the medieval. Almost seemed like a scene out of Lord of the Rings. Things get on a very high level during and after the train sequence. A important point in the movie. The action itself is again amazing. That long shot where the camera becomes free and moves around and with the actors is a work of art. There and after that scene is the first time we get some very good acting in which Oscar Isaac shows why he is a very good actor. But the rest almost do it equally good. The climax is a bit too easy but the ending is really making that up. Ofcourse the movie also has some issues. The basic story is not more a thing to take us from one action scene to another. It's nothing more than a movie about a bunch of girls trying to get out of the building. But the way it's told makes it so much better. The tasks therein are the most fun to follow. Besides the scenes late in the movie the acting is not that good. No one really jumps out and performs above average. There is not much character development going on. The violence was toned down a bit being a 12 movie (PG-13 in the states). But even in the extended 16 (R rated) version it's pretty well mannered. There is absolutely no consistency in the action scenes but thats logical. Those are all minor points which are compensated by the story structure, and other moments in the story which keep the balance in this movie intact. Technically it's all good. Almost to a point of perfection. The cinematography is truly amazing. We get some great shots throughout. the editing is smooth. Besides the great soundtrack, the score is done very well. the action is well choreographed. The sound design was really great although the voices could have been mixed down a bit. Sometimes very loud. If you can't get into the vibe of this movie it can lead to a pretty big let down. That's why i also understand the bad and average score reviews. It all depends how well you can get into the movie. Audio/visually very overwhelming, beautifully designed worlds, and a very good telling structure. A great experience everytime i see it. A true hate it or love it movie and for me it's the second one. 4.5/5 |

You know what, that was the first Sucker Punch review I've read that's made me think it might be worth a revisit. None of this "you don't get it", "it's actually a sucker punch to the audience" malarkey many supporters try to thrust on me. But just a deep enjoyment for the visual styles. Keep up the good work mate.

Wow! This was unexpected!
I don't even know where to start. I am completely blown away by Tomorrowland or Project T. A movie filled with great ideas. For me this is everything Disney stood for and still stands for although they sometimes forget themselves. Luckily Brad Bird hasn't forgotten it. He once said you have to put all you're love into a project. That you have to come up with something new every time to keep the audience interested. And Bird does that best. Even if you don't like Tomorrowland you can't blame Bird for not having tries to give the audience something in which they can be kids again just for a while and fully go into the adventure with Frank, Casey and Athena The film has a great start immediately with the fun introduction and story of Frank and how he ended up in Tomorrowland. He then gets taken over by Casey. The moment when she looks at the stars with her parents and this quote come to pass: Mother: "What if there's nothing out there?" Casey: "What if there is!". Pure Disney and a great example of movie magic. And the movie's full of these beautiful quotes. The beginning is a introduction more or less into the lives of the characters. And that's very well done. But than we get the build up to Tomorrowland in which Casey gets the pin. A lot of fun little moments come from that in which space is Casey's limitation is room to further explore the strange world. When she finds a location where she can go all out, we get a wonderful scene. The design and images we get in Tomorrowland are just stellar. We are really there with Casey exploring that wondrous world. And there begins the adventure. Slowly and bit by bit we get to know what is going on and what everything is about. We don't get to return to Tomorrowland before we had a fight with killer robots, Franks demolishing house scene and a jaw dropping scene in Paris. And that last one is amazing. Wonderful use of color, a fantastic location and and what's done with a certain monument is great. Also that scene is fantastically scored by Michael Giacchino who's music has a important part in the movie and is almost a character itself. Eventually we do return to Tomorrowland to find that it's nothing we expected. There we discover what is going on and in another fantastic scene it's shown to us. Unfortunately the climax (fight) is a bit of a letdown and is nothing compared to the level of what we saw previous in the movie. And that's a story full of love and fantasy. Filled with great character moments like the call home by Casey. Luckily things recover towards the end with the conversation between Frank and Athena. Very well done by the actors without being pushy in terms of emotions. Technically it's all great. A few little flaws in the visual effects department. But thats a bit nitpicking as it is absolutely flawless everywhere else in Project T. The movie has a very good story. Although it's not structured well at points, it does do it's job. In the directing it's noticeable that Bird has put a lot of love into this. And you have to give him credit for that. The editing is strong and the cinematography is fantastic. In the sound design it's clear from moment one on, the Disney logo, that we are in for a treat. As said Giacchino's score is amazing. He hits every right emotion. Whether it be a bombastic piece or a small piano piece. Great composer. With the acting it's all good. Clooney has so much fun and want's to put effort in this project which is noticeable. Hugh Laurie is great. Raffey Cassidy is a actress of whom we will get to see a lot of fun/great things in the future. The one i was most impressed with is Britt Robertson. A part that absolutely suits her the best, no one else could have played it this way. Great job by this lovely young actress. I didn't expect it but Tomorrowland completely blew me away. That's mainly because of the love that was put into this project. And you can ask the question "Does it make movies so much better and my answer to that is, YES. A project like this will benefit from that and will find it's way into the heart of it's audience. It brings back the essence of Disney movies back. The thought of anything is possible is what this movie is. At the end i wanted more. More character development that answers questions like where is Casey's mom. More of the amazing world that's called Tomorrowland. A movie that does everything right where many in Hollywood today fail. And that's to transport the audience to another world for two hours and let them forget their worries and the world around them for a little while. 4.5/5 |
