It may not have been a great movie, but it would have been interesting had the MPAA not cut it to shreds. When that happened, I think Paramount got the "picture" (pardon the pun) and decided to end the franchise after part 8.

I'm sure the box office returns not even hitting $15M for Part VIII probably had more to do with it.

Perhaps you are right. Although at the time, the MPAA was going hard on horror. I'm sure there are many reasons on why it didn't gross that much. I would attribute the forced cuts as one of the many reasons on the film's marginal gross.

Or even a complex plot to write. I mean honestly, this is the type of film they don't even really NEED. A script for. Plan out the kills, and just have the actors improv all their lines outside of that. It's not like it'll be any worse than what will end up actually being written anyways.

I love The New Blood.

Jason Voorhees on fire! It doesn't get much better than that. In fact, all of the stunts during the last 20 minutes are pretty amazing. The lead girl is also one of my favorites from the series.

I'm probably in the minority but when they announced the first remake I really wanted it to be about the mother. Looking back, Friday the 13th (2009) felt more like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2004) remake.
I haven't read much about the new reboot yet but I hope Pam Vorhees will be part of it, but not as a hallucination or flashback.

Friday the 13th (1980) and Friday the 13th: Part 2 are my favorites by far. In my opinion, these are the only two actual "horror movies" of the entire franchise, because they still have a distinct feeling of ominous dread due to the fact that a first-time viewer has no real idea what to expect. I think that these movies ceased to be horror movies when Jason got the hockey mask in the third film, and the stories became more about the body counts at the hands of the iconic character.

That said, I have an enduring love for all eight of the Paramount films in the series. Even the weakest entries (A New Beginning, Jason Takes Manhattan) are still fun and engaging from a "You had to be there during the 1980s." nostalgic sense.

I think that the series tripped and faceplanted on the pavement with Jason Goes to Hell. That is my least favorite film of the series. Jason X is not much better, but it does at least have Jason back in action as we know him and love him.

I think that Freddy vs. Jason has a cool story, but I hate the look of the film. Computer-generated gore scenes, obtrusive post-processing film styles, annoying color tints, and outdoor scenes that do not even remotely look as though they were really filmed outdoors. In terms of the looks alone, this movie epitomizes everything that I hate about cinematography and film processing over the past 20 years.

I like Friday the 13th (2009) a lot, and I would rank it as the best movie of the series since the 1980s glory days. I prefer to think of this film not as a remake or as a reboot, but as a natural continuation of the story after Friday the 13th: Part 2 from 1981. The only real negative is that this film leans too close to torture porn for my tastes. The Jason Voorhees of the 1980s would not have hung someone in a sleeping bag and set fire to the sleeping bag to let the person slowly burn to death. He certainly wouldn't have kidnapped people either.

(I've already expressed these viewpoints and many many more in the Friday the 13th thread over in the North American Blu-ray section, but it's a slow day here at the office.)

Who knows how crazy Jason would've gotten back in the day, if the MPAA hadn't forced so many cuts. I think the kills could have been a lot more elaborate if they weren't hindered so much.

I think that the gore effects might have been more elaborate without the MPAA cuts, but I've always figured that Jason Voorhees killed people instantly during the 1980s movies. Some dude is walking along, a machete or an ax swings through the air, and that person is dead right away. The 1980s Jason Voorhees did not strike me as someone who enjoyed watching people suffer. He simply killed them off quickly.

A few of the kills in the 2009 Friday the 13th film seemed really "out of character" for Jason Voorhees. In particular, the scene with the girl slowly burning to death in the sleeping back tied over the fire, and the scene where a guy is slowly dying outside and being used as bait to draw other characters out of the house. The sadism element of those scenes was not present in the 1980s movies.

I thoroughly enjoyed the sleeping bag beat against the tree kill.

I agree with everything you said except for F13 2009 being torture porn. We may have different definitions of torture porn but burning someone alive is not one of them. The Saw movies or Hostel I consider torture porn. Something like F13 is just a kill or gore IMO.

I do agree that the 2009 movie is one of the better F13 movies. I really enjoyed it and can't wait to see what they give us next. Hoping for something like the 2009 version or part 2 Jason.

For the upcoming film, I'd like to see Jason Voorhees in the snow.

It would be insanely cool to see Jason stalking people through the woods during a blizzard when the ground is covered by snow and everything is white. There's just something insanely creepy about that mental image.

Of course, a bunch of pretty camp girls bundled up in winter clothes might not fit one's idea of the Friday the 13th aesthetic. Still, I'd like to see Jason Voorhees walking through a snowy forest.

That would be awesome. I really hope they do keep the winter idea for this movie. So many great kills could come out of it and like you said the white snow would make for some amazing cinematography.

I'm sure they could get a fire going inside and have the girls get to hot and start getting naked. Writers will find some reason to do it.

Both films had the same director and cinematographer team-up (Marcus Nispel and Daniel Pearl). Or were you just referring to the script?

Are we even sure this new Friday the 13th has been greenlit? I know they are working on a script but from what I've read over the last 2 years it doesn't seem like this is actually a priority for anyone involved.

Here's hoping I'm wrong.

A roaring fire. Candles fill the cabin with a softly lit orange glow. Outside the blizzard roars on, the snow tap tap tapping on the window.

Shonda: Tiffany! Why are you taking off my bra?
Tiffany: I have to lotion your back, silly. It's so dry out there. I don't want your skin to crack.
Shonda: It's warm in this cabin. With that fire going I hardly remembered it's ten degrees outside.
Tiffany: More like six degrees, of Kevin Bacon!
Tiffany/Shonda: Ah ha ha ha ha

Shonda's bra falls to the floor.

Tiffany: There. All undressed. I didn't want you to sweat too much.

Shonda: Thanks baby! This is the best vacation ever. I couldn't ask for more.

The girls lean in and begin to kiss -- Shonda rubbing Tiffany's back. Suddenly the door bursts open sending pieces of wood flying in every direction -- Jason stands in front of them with a huge icicle.

Shonda: Oh My F***ing GOD!!!

Tiffany: Shonda! Run! (Tiffany is quickly impaled through the throat with the pointy end of the icicle)

Shonda bolts for the stairs, her breasts bouncing up and down dangerously -- as she hits the first step her right breast swings upward from the momentum and hits her square in the face with a sickening *SLAP* -- Shonda lands on the stairs -- knocked out.
