Negativity among fanboys, total ambivalence from everyone else. Either way it's not looking good for Fox.

It's Fox's own fault, they just have no way to cater this movie towards the fanboys while also keeping casual audiences interested in yet another superhero reboot. I'd like for this movie to be a pleasant surprise but it has trainwreck - commercially, critically, creatively - written all over it.

Yeah. They have a good thing going with X-Men but I think the only way to make the FF really exciting on-screen is with other Marvel properties, so if I were them I would just sell the rights back for a massive amount of money. That's not a Marvel Studios fanboy wish either, because I am very iffy on half their movies. I'm just saying that seems like the logical route to go down if those movie doesn't make money.

Well if that recent report is to be believed, this F4 movie is basically being set up for an inevitable X-Men team-up. I guess Fox is now scared that X-Men's popularity will go down again once Jackman and the First Class/familiar faces crew leaves.

I dont have my FF4 John Bryne softcover volume collections here with me in HK but if I could I wish I could scan and upload them here for you. These stories were the peak of the FF4 comics of my generation - serious dramatic stuff, and existed before the Ultimate versions which I havent read but people (younger generations) say those too are good serious dark stuff. Are you thinking of the 1960s FF4 that is light and funny?

Regarding the Batman similarity, I think it's nothing more than listening to the narration of Morgan Freeman lookalike/soundalike actor since Morgan Freeman was in Nolan's films. There's four kids acting like behaved college kids, a science lab, a nightmarish negative zone scene, and non-revealing quick cuts of action which look like nothing from Nolan's Batmans - tone or visuals.

If any upcoming superhero movie looks like Nolan's dark and gritty Batmans, I would have to say Batman v. Superman looks like Nolan style.
The F4 comics have always had some shade of darkness or maturity to them. The stories from the 1960's just have the wacky science and treatment of Sue that overshadow some really great stories. Fantastic Four 48-50 with the rise of Galactus and issue 51 "This Man this Monster" are considered some of the best written stories of all time.

The 1970's were just silly, but when Jerry Conway was on the book he was handling some heavy emotional themes in his stories. I think issue 130 deals with the mishandling of their relationship and how Sue becomes fed up with the nurse maid and mother act Reed seems to only think of her as and she quits the team. There was also a pending divorce between Reed and Sue later on when Reed turns Franklin into a veggie as a way to remove his growing unstable powers and well that pretty much was the end of Reed and Sue for a long while.

The 1980's like you said is a return to form. The Trial of Galactus is one of the highlights of that run as are many other great stories John penned. Reed actually defending the right to life of one of the Universe's greatest cosmic threats was astounding and the family dynamic was never more beautifully written under his pen.

The Fox movies have almost brainwashed people into thinking that they don't share a universe, even when they own multiple properties. It catches me off guard sometimes when going back to the books after a while, where you're reading - say - With Malice Towards All, and it really throws you when during an FF story, Daredevil sweeps in and saves the day. It takes a microsecond to realise "Oh, yeah...it's the...*ahem* comicbook".

Even StingingVelvet wants the Fantastic Four to join the MCU? (I've noticed you've had to include the caveat "I'm not a Marvel fanboy" in many of your posts on this forum, lol.)

Well I'm still hoping this movie is good.

Hopefully, that will never ever happen unless Disney-Marvel get the Fantastic Four and X-Men rights back.

I'm sure Fox is confident in their property but they've got to be paying -real- close attention to see how Sony benefits from their deal with Marvel.

Not really, I am just thinking business-wise. If this movie loses money I don't see why they would bother holding on and making another within 5 years or whatever. They might as well keep expanding their X-Men stuff, which works well and makes money, and take Disney for all they can get for the FF rights.

You'd be correct business-wise if this movie tanks but I doubt it will, at least not enough to get them to sell the property. What's the budget on this thing anyway?

F4 may go back to Marvel relatively soon, but X-Men is staying at Fox; too big a money-maker for the studio and they have plenty of good stories/characters to tell without relying on team-ups. The best we can hope for is Disney/Marvel and Fox coming to an agreement like they did with Sony for Spidey, but I'm not holding my breath.

I actively do not want the X-Men and Avengers universes to merge. I know it's that way in the comics, but for the movies I think it works best having them apart. For one thing the tone for each is very different in my opinion, and for another I think any other superhero origin loses meaning and reason when mutants exist.

I also think X-Men works better in it's own separate universe. The whole subtext of X-Men is discrimination of people who are born with different abilities, which is an entirely different theme from the world-saving superheroes in the Avengers.

However, Fox has so far completely crapped the bed with the Fantastic Four. With all the exploration the Fantastic Four has done across the universe and in different dimensions, there is no excuse for the Fantastic Four movies not to show us great scenes like this:

Nope. Instead, Fox cheaps out and shows us a cloud and calls it "Galactus", and for this reboot they give us a bunch of teenagers farting around in a lab, and a computer hacker they call "Doctor Doom".

There is a lot of great FF source material that would earn this franchise all kinds of respect and big money. I wish they would USE IT.

To be fair, there was a hint of some spectacular N-zone visuals in the trailers, they probably want to save it for later while also get more time to polish the effects.

I'm hoping that unlike other recent films *cough*Genisys*cough*, they've actually held back in the trailers and not spoiled the entire film. They may be saving something truly great, which I hope, because otherwise this just might be heading straight for disaster...

For the sake of this movie, I hope you are right. But seeing what Marvel has done with Thor and GotG I would like to see what they could do with the Fantastic Four!
