We have just reached this point in the argument

I still have the LD of S:TM, and the 2.0 track is excellent, with my amp perfectly decoding it into surround.

Also in my collection somewhere is the 1993 LD of The Exorcist, which uses the remixed stereo track from the 1979 theatrical reissue. I didn't know about the track when I got it, but it really was trippy to hear with with such a wide soundfield. The police turning up at the end and the commotion on the street below is a real standout.

I've reached the point where I don't even care about this anymore. If/when they get around to releasing an edition worthy of my money I'll buy it. If not? so be it.

I don't have the LD but I have the widescreen vhs from about 1995 I think that uses the LD master so should be the same audio I think.

So therefore is that LD/ Wide-screen vhs mix essentially the same as the 70mm on the UHD but not conformed to a 5.1 encode?

I may have to record a bit in from my pal vhs and slow it down to the right tempo to see how it compares to the 5.1 on the UHD.

Quick question.....

The 70mm 5.1 soundtrack has only ever been used for an HD release on the 2018 UHD disc? It's never shown up elsewhere as I infer from that handy chart above?

....and now back to the two Lazaruses fighting for all eternity in that negative conduit till time itself ends...

"What would it be like?" -- Well, now we know.

But what of Lazarus?

Oh to answer your question - I think the 4K was the only release with the 70mm mix.

I thought I just asked that, see my post above, the LD/Wide-screen vhs uses the 70mm mix doesn't it?

You know, as I was writing my answer, I asked myself "wasn't the LD in DD?".

It wasn't. The only one I could find was a Dolby Surround LD (WB 12030A/B). Maybe the source was the 70mm mix, but it didn't have the discrete channels like 5.1 does.

The LD came out in 1990 well before discrete surround sound at home. The provenance of its audio has never been officially established.

Sorry. I was just too tired to read. I just wanted a quick answer and not to have to read this thread any more. I think it's like smoking, every minute on this thread takes a minute off your life.

I did try and find a release date of the LD and couldn't find one. That makes sense. First was "Clear and Present Danger" in '91, right?

Early 1995, maybe January, followed shortly thereafter by True Lies.

I have the early-mid 90s widescreen edition knocking around somewhere, but I'll be buggered if I remember how the sound compared. Once I picked up the LaserDisc, the tape fell by the wayside.

Yep that's what I meant, the LD and ws vhs maybe used the Dolby Surround 70mm audio and when WB put it on the UHD they matrixed it into a 5.1 track but the underlying source maybe the same.

I don't know without some comparisons but just a thought.

You have this reversed. If the LD used the 70mm six-track, and I'm not sure it did, the discrete tracks would have been folded down to stereo. The 5.1 track on the UHD are the discrete tracks and there's no matrix involved.

So when are we getting back to talking about how Superman 4 is better than Superman 3?
